NEW YORK CRICKET ACADEMY U23 20/20 COMPETITION

Last Friday, on a beautiful summer day, a top young international batsman, 21 year old Nasir Jamshed from Pakistan, batted at Baisley Pond Park South in Queens in the NY.

Nasir Jamshed scored 74 on his First Class debut at age 15. Selected for the Pakistan Under 19 team, Jamshed celebrated his national debut with 44 & 204 runs, and helped Pakistan Under 19 comeback to draw the match. Jamshed then went on to get a world title in the 2006 Under 19 World Cup which Pakistan won.

Jamshed then made an impressive start for the Pakistan national team in ODIs, scoring a quick 61 on his debut against Zimbabwe in January 2008. Unbeaten half-centuries against India and Bangladesh followed, but then a duck and one in 2 innings against Sri Lanka. In his 12 ODIs he averages 35.30 with a HS of 74.

He has played 50 First Class games and averages 43.22 with a highest score of 182. Just last year he helped his team win the domestic 20/20 championship, Faysal Bank T20 Cup, being 3rd highest run scorer.

Jamshed played delightful shots all around the wicket, but it was in his running between the wickets one saw a significant difference from the New York cricketers – he ran his first runs FAST, and often 3s came, instead of just 2s.

Nasir said , “I’m just visiting family for a couple of weeks. It’s great to play cricket with my friends in America.”

Jamshed scored a 50 to helped his team Brooklyn Knights to a win over Incredible XI. Incredible XI must be commended for their play, despite going up against an International player.

Winner of American College Cricket’s Emerging Star Award Az Cheema (NYU-Poly) scored a 50 and took 4 wickets to help his team, Daredevils, win. Cheema’s team is also doing well in the NYPD United Cricket League, where they have won all 3 of their games so far.

Rohan Hope, named after the great Rohan Kanhai, scored 43,Asfaque Chowdhury 33, whilst Rifat Hussain (BMCC) took 3 wickets to earn Bronx Knight Riders the surprising win over a strong MMZ Superstars team. Most of the players on the Knight riders team attend BMCC, where Arslan Sony has been trying to develop a team since 2009. This year it looks as if BMCC will be a contender at the American College Cricket Northeast Championship.

Just last week free agent Andre “Rusty” Kirton, like Lebron James, left Bronx Knight Riders after they lost a game, for another team.

MMZ is led by Andy Mohammed who was surprisingly left out of the USA team for the T20 World Cup qualifier in Florida.
