Game date :July 18th 2010 Team : Washington Bengals vs  Titans
Venue : Veterans Ground ( Woodbridge VA)

Match Report : (As Written by Team Captain Anurag Sharma

Bengals were put into bat. Roshan and Eraj started well but could not sustain. Bengals were 26/2 after 5.5 overs. Raghav and Anurag stabilized the innings (needed to make sure there was no further damage as Bengals did not have Adil Bhatti today and batting was not as deep) in an 85 run partnership before Anurag (27) got out caught at covers in the 20th over.

Raghav was dominating and Raja joined him and supported him well while hitting a few brilliant shots as well. The two put together a 100 run partnership. No bowler could stop Raghav. The wicket was a very good one for batting with a fast outfield and Raghav used all this brilliantly. He hit the ball everywhere. He wasn’t playing half shots (only using the wrist). He was actually swinging his arm and using his shoulder to get under the ball. He has tremendous bat speed and he utilized it very effectively. There was no bowler who troubled him. He also did not play risky shots today. If he continues to do this, he can get many more 100s. It was his best innings as a Bengal and one of the most dominating performances.

Raja also played very well with him. The two were able to raise the run rate considerably and provided a magnificent platform for a brilliant finish.Raghav (110) finally got out in the 32nd over caught at mid-wicket. Only tactical mistake was that he had been encouraged to take the powerplay the previous over and he was planning on taking it after this over. Unfortuately, he got out on the last ball before the power play.Had he stayed things could have been very interesting the rest of the overs.

Unfortunately, Raja (34) got out next over and then we completely lost the plot. Too many run outs and not applying ourselves. Not sure why our batsmen play under pressure. The stage was so well set to put the opposition on the mat. When our batsmen go in, they should have a positive frame of mind. Especially w/ more than 200 on the board. They should not look like they are in panic mode. Ankur has the ability to score and play brilliantly in the death overs. He did not make use of great conditions today. Saad and Juber also simply threw their wickets away. We only scored 33 runs in the last 7 overs with 6 wickts. This could come back to haunt us in tightly fought matches. Especially playoff games. Anyway, Bengals finished with 263/9 (should have had atleast 20 more runs).

 Titans innings:

They started aggressively and got some boundaries. But both batsmen also got lives. However, our bowlers were put under pressure by their batsmen and I think we need to learn from this. Our bowlers need to stay calm and understand what the batsmen are tryign to do and counter that. Titans were 70/0 in 10. The first breakthrough came when Raghav had SHoaib caught at long-on. Ankur got the next 2 wkts and was bowling extremely well. He was getting good pace and was putting the ball in the right areas. They were having a hard time hitting him. Anurag also supported him well from the other end and got 2 wickets in his 1st over and all of a sudden Titans were 89/5.

They were 100/5 in 20. Bengals had fought well. As a matter of fact, they should have been 100/6 or possibly 7. We had lapses in fielding and Shah Rukh was dropped not once but 3 times within Ankur’s 2 overs. This came back to really bite us. He then went on a rampage and scored well. Our (mine) tactical mistake was that I tried to pruchase his wicket by giving him inviting balls to hit so he could be caught on the boundary. However he cleared the boundary well and gained confidence. From there he went from strength to strength.

Srini got the next breakthrough when he had the other batsmen out caught behind. Then came Titans best partnership. With two young, athletic fast runners they really attacked. They ran well and were getting enough boundaries. At the 30 over mark Titans were 163/6 and needing 100 in 10. They came back from the break and attacked hard. They were able to get 55 runs in 5 overs. We again dropped catches here but finally got Shah rukh out on Ankur’s bowling. Srini followed this up by two wickets in a single over and we bundled them up for 225. “
