NYPD Commissioner gives Bat signal ! Batsman in Gotham City !

NYC Police Commissioner Ray Kelly opened the 2010 Season of NYPD Cricket in Queens,NY with a short speech, after the singing of the “Star Spangled Banner”.  

Later the Commissioner did some batting, chatted with attendees,posed for photos, spoke with the Press, and generally seemed to have a good time. It was fascinating to see Commissioner Kelly shift easily from talking cricket with spectators to speaking about serious crime-fighting issues with reporters. 

Also in attendance was President of American College Cricket Lloyd Jodah, and John Aaron, USA Cricket Secretary and Member of American College Cricket Advisory Board.    

Here are the results of the first day’s play -there were 4 games: 

DareDevils 144-6 (20 overs) extinguished Royal Stars, 67- all out (11 overs). DareDevils 20 pts, Royal Stars 4 pts.  

Kings XI 106-2 (10 ov) subjected Tigers to a loss, 105- all out (17 ov). Kings XI 19 pts, Tigers 4 pts.  

Stallions 169-7 (20 ov) didn’t horse around in a super victory over Kryptonite, 82- all out (13 ov). Stallions 20 pts, Kryptonite 6 pts.  

SuperStars 153-9 (20 ov)  were too much for 2009 Champions Lycans 135-6 (20 ov). SuperStars 17 pts, Lycans 9 points

The NYPD United Cricket Points System:

Bonus points – Batting: 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120 runs. At each marker, one point for each amount reached for a possible total of five points.
Bowling: 3, 5, 7, 9, all out and a total of five (5) possible points.

The top six teams will make playoffs. The 1 and 2 seeds draw first round byes, while 3 vs. 6 and 4 vs. 5.

NYPD Cricket Club

Some Officers of the NYPD have formed a Cricket Club to play “friendly matches” initially.

The first  is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 18 at Kissena Park in Flushing, NY. The NYPD XI will come up against an Australian Community XI. The match is being sponsored by the Eight Mile Creek and The Australian restaurants, both located in New York City.

A game is also proposed between the NYPD XI and an American College Cricket Friendly XI. Anyone interested in playing for the ACC Friendly XI may contact Lloyd Jodah Dogevpr2@aim.com
