UMiami, St Cloud State & FIU students to report live on NZ vs SL

In the 1800’s the first International tours by cricket teams brought teams from England, Australia and the West Indies to the USA. Even the first tours by Universities, Oxford & Cambridge, took place in 1895, to the USA. In 1932 Don Bradman and an Australian team toured America and Bradman scored over 2,000 runs. 1999 teams from India and Australia played at Woodley in California.

So International teams playing in the USA are nothing new, but the Pearls Cup between New Zealand and Sri Lanka is happening in a wide context, illustrated by the following 3 key points:

1  March 2009 the first American College Cricket Spring Break Championship took place at the Central Broward Regional Park in Florida, and together with the coverage by the New York Times began to bring cricket back into mainstream America.

2. The IPL with its American-style league, and the rest of the cricket world, has its eyes on America.

 3. The ICC, Espn and others know how large the TV market for cricket in the USA is.

The move by New Zealand to partner with USA Cricket was such a logical one, its a surprise no other major cricketing country had  done it before. But then USA Cricket had its problems.

USA Cricket CEO Don Lockerbie’s  “Destination USA” dovetailed with American College Cricket’s vision of including Canadian Universities and of having the University of the West Indies (& British Universities originally) as “Special Guests” at its Championship.

Since the NZ Black Caps vs Sri Lanka matches will be played at what we now call the “College Championship Stadium”, AmericanCollegeCricket.com will have 3 Reporters reporting on the matches, especially the performance of our own Adrian Gordon. Our Reporters will be:

Shahaan Razak             (UMIami )             President of the UMiami CC

Sqaminda Siriwardena    (St Cloud State) – College All American, & Under 19 All American  (of Sri Lanka background)

Imran Sadiq   ( FIU )Imran practised today with the Black Caps

They will provide live Updates, interviews, photos.

In the USA the matches will be webcast on ESPN3.com, ESPN’s live sports broadband network .Last March, American College Cricket’s live webcast of the Semis and the Finals of the 2010 American College Cricket Championship marked the first live broadcast of a major American cricket event.

One of the world’s greatest batsman of all-time Sunil Gavaskar, will be in the commentary booth with Ian Chappell. Espn International will also carry the games on TV around the world.

USA Cricket CEO Donald Lockerbie stated that with the ESPN broadcast and media companies involved “the world will now see that the USA is open for business as a serious cricketing nation. We are looking to show the world that the United States is ready for all the ICC full members to come to our country and play.”

Last March at the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship Don Lockerbie presented the Chanderpaul Trophy to the new Champions, York University.
