Female students at Laurier were first taught tapeball cricket then later introduced to ‘hardball’ but they were able to show their mettle in tapeball indoors this past weekend, getting to the Finals of the Canadian College Cricket Women’s Ontario Cup, here they lost to a combined women’s team called Canadian College Cricket 1. For this accomplishment they received coverage in their college media, the Cord https://thecord.ca/laurier-cricket-clubs-womens-team-finishes-2nd-at-indoor-tournament/? .

The use of tape or tennis ball to introduce people with no cricket background, to the game has been one of American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah’s mantras. The same principle has been used at Ryerson where Canadian College Cricket and Ryerson’s Obaid Ullah Babar an Hassan Mirza have been very supportive.

Meanwhile every Saturday at 7 am they have hardball  practice at indoor lanes, with Abdul Rehman, former club President and a top player on Laurier’s men’s team. Though Abdul as Coach is a huge force behind the team, Sarah Laws and Maaike Van Windergen are strong leaders among the women players.

As Lloyd advised Abdul 2 years ago, ‘As great a job as you (Abdul) have been doing, leaders, motivators, must be developed from the players themselves. Progress now and continuity in the future will only happen if the players are invested beyond a Coach’s involvement.’

Their big test is Memorial Day Weekend in NYC at the Roy Sweeney Annual Women’s Tournament, which the Laurier Women are committed to competing in, and are very excited about. Participation was arranged by Lloyd, whilst Laurier sports administration is supporting well through 2 key Staff, Peter Donohue and Amanda Kelly. In fact Amanda flew to the American College Cricket Nationals to meet with Lloyd.
