UC Berkeley – Cal Bears, at the West Coast Championship with Lloyd

‘Twas the night before Christmas Eve when UC Berkeley our 2nd newest club, President Shikhar Gupta called Lloyd to give the awesome news that the team was booking it’s flights to Ft Lauderdale from California, for the National Championship March 13-17, 2019. It was going to be the most fun Spring Break of their college years.

Shikhar Gupta first contacted Lloyd Jodah, American College Cricket President, a few months ago but it was only about 2 months before the November West Coast Championship that the UC Berkeley club was begun in earnest with Shikhar as Club President. A strong Club Executive was established, practice begun and a GuFundMe account quickly passed 2,500.

Everybody on the Club Executive had phone conversations with Lloyd to guide them, and so conscientious were they in getting that done, one student played phone tag with Lloyd about 6 times. Uniforms were ordered as the team got ready the West Coast Championship.

There was a hitch however, for a number of the players the weekend of Nov 17 was their football team’s last Home game for some of the cricket players who would be graduating. A solution was found with a round robin format that allowed Berkeley, known as Cal, to play on Sunday, which meant they flew to Los Angeles that Saturday night. The downside was the tournament was decided on Net Run Rate rather than a Final, so Cal ended as 2nd to Arizona State on NNR but they have the talent to be a strong contender – for the first time there’s a strong possibility the Chanderpaul Trophy could get to the West Coast.https://us.hotstar.com/subscribe/get-started
