175th Anniversary Celebrations of 1844 Historic Game !
2019 will be the 175th Anniversary of the historic cricket game USA vs Canada which took place in NYC at what is now NYU Langone Medical Center at 34th St and 2nd Av. It was the first time in history young men from 2 different countries fought on a playing field, instead of a battlefield. This game began International sports and truly revolutionized how national pride was expressed, battling in a sport, instead of in a war.
Remarkably neither cricket nor the world celebrates this event – not surprisingly, as cricket ignores opportunities regularly to keep itself relevant and vibrant, so the world pays little attention. Had this 1844 game been a soccer or baseball match, we wouldn’t hear the last of it.
Anyway American College Cricket decided to commemorate the 1844 by reviving USA vs Canada at the college level in 2015, and in 2019 the 7th and 8th Series will be played as part of the 1844 cricket match 175th Anniversary. Here are major events planned so far for the Celebration-
1- American College Cricket USA vs Canada Series – Jan 26 and 27th at Moosa Stadium, Houston, Texas.
2 – 11th American College Cricket National Championship, March 13 to 17. Central Broward Regional Park and nearby fields;
ALUMNI Allstars vs Current Students Allstars – 1 game.
3- Laurier Women’s Cricket Tour of NYC, in May.
4 – American College Cricket USA vs Canada Series VIII – May, Toronto, Canada
5 – College World Cup – Moosa Stadium- Houston,Texas
6 – Our Mid West and North East Championships will take place on the weekends following Sept 24,25 and 26 which is when the 1844 game took place, and we will celebrate at those 2 Regionals. The North East will be in NYC, the city where the 1844 game took place. We will further recognize the 1844 event throughout the 2019 Regional season.
7 – Queens College in Guyana was begun in 1844 as well, just days after that historic cricket match. It went on to be one of the top schools academically of the British Empire, and later Commonwealth. Queens College also dominated schools’ cricket in Guyana for decades. They may appear as Special Guests at the 2020 American College Cricket National Championship. in 2011 Presentation College of Trinidad and Tobago, and in 2010 University of the West Indies were Special Guests.
