Two other left handers come to mind, who made their Test debuts as bowlers, but went on to make their mark as batsmen.

Sir Garfield Sobers became one of the greatest batsmen ever, and the greatest all rounder ever. Wasim Akram became the greatest left-arm pacer ever, & scored 3 Test centuries.

19 year old Ashton Agar, with his Australian father & Sri Lankan mother watching, set a record for the highest score batting at # 11, and on Test debut, whilst saving the day for Australia against their Ashes enemy, England.
