‘Sir’ Shivnarine Chanderpaul, # 10 alltime run scorer,gets to 10,000 !

The great Shiv Chanderpaul & Lloyd Jodah, founder & President of American College Cricket

As a 13 year old Shivnarine Chanderpaul began spending a few days each week with the Jodah family at 126 Regent Road in Guyana, next to the Bourda Cricket ground.

This enabled Shiv, a boy from a village called Unity, to play top level cricket. He followed a long tine of Indo-Guyanese cricketers who became part of the Jodah family, including Alvin Kallicharran and Len Baichan – both of whom scored centuries on their Test debut.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul became the 10th batsman to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. He has also been 10th on the List of all time run scorers.

“Although West Indies have not quite managed to be a force in the Test arena, Chanderpaul’s batting performances have enabled them to stay competitive more often than not.”  Cricinfo

The 3 articles below from Cricinfo pay tribute to the great man’s batting – we’d like to add a mention of his remarkable off the field contribution to the game :

Chanderpaul is the ONLY active Test player to ever take an active role in the development of the game in another country ! His endorsement of, and support of American College Cricket is truly deserving of the highest recognition by everyone in the cricket world.

As the New York Times in 2009 said “Cricket has not even registered a blip on the American sports scene” when American College Cricket started, but what it has done for cricket in the USA and Canada in the past 3 and a half years is truly amazing – and Chanderpaul has been a supporter from the beginning.

There are, and have been, other greats on the field. But when cricket in America needed someone, one man, Shiv Chanderpaul came to the wicket. One man had the vision, when there was nothing to see.

So for his contribution to the game, on and off the field……we believe Shivnarine Chanderpaul is worthy of honor in Guyana, the West Indies, the USA, Canada,….and the birthplace of the game, England (an honorary Knighthood, especially since the Queen missed bestowing that honor on Rohan Kanhai) !  In fact, since he’s of Indian descent, India should honor Chanderpaul too !
