NY, Florida & Texas for T20 World Cup matches !
ICC has confirmed Broward Stadium, home of American College Cricket to be one of the sites for matches of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Grand Prairie, the new Major League Cricket Stadium near Dallas, Texas will be another. Those 2 are no surprises.
The big news is that a “pop up” Stadium will be built in the NYC suburbs of Long Island to be the 3rd host, including the India v Pakistan match ! This is a huge move by the International Cricket Council as there are hundreds of thousands, probably millions of Indians, Pakistanis and other cricket fans just in the NY Tri State area, not to mention countless others who would travel to NY.
There will be hurdles for the NY Stadium to be set up, in the short time, but it can be done, with the appropriate political help. It’s been done twice in Brampton Canada for the Canadian GT20. Incidentally Long Island has cricket fields at many schools (used by the local adult league) and though that’s a far way from a Stadium & its immense logistics, it does demonstrate some favorability to the game.
On a footnote, should the NY popup Stadium idea happen, it will be a huge accomplishment for former USA Cricket Director Ajith Bhaskar, who has been involved with this effort, especially after the Bronx proved to be a no go.
As for Broward Stadium, American College Cricket’s early and long term support has yielded the rewards of India playing there 4 times, and now the T20 World Cup.
