The 2018 John Bart King Award winner
Vojta Drmota [Harvard] is from Gothenburg, Sweden and came to the USA in August 2016 as a freshman at Harvard, to study philosophy and computer science.
A Physical Education teacher, who was British, had given Vojta a brief introduction to cricket at age 14. But it was not until this year when he started attending the Harvard Cricket Club practice, encouraged by his friend Arjun Verma, he really got involved in learning the game. Vojta said, ‘I think I’ve learned a lot of the rules of the game by now. My biggest takeaway from the game so far is that focus is key. Cricket is a game that requires prolonged amounts of high-intensity focus, which is a tough skill to master.’
Vojta spent his 21st birthday as part of the Harvard squad at the 2018 American College Cricket National Championship, playing primarily as a fielder. At 5’9 and 165 lbs he’s athletically built. Fielding has heightened importance in T20, and is a great way to bring new athletes into cricket.’I had a great time. The venue was amazing and the sportsmanship was outstanding. It was an honor to represent Harvard at nationals.’
At Nationals Vojta had a long conversation with Lloyd about the philosophy behind American College Cricket and the Social Media strategy, which further peaked his interest. In Sweden he had played soccer, as well as been involved in team administration, so he decided to make the leap to being a leader for the Cricket Club, and became a co- President.
With 1 and a half years left at Harvard, Vojta intends to make a difference with the Harvard Cricket Club.
The John Bart King Award was begun in 2010 to honor America’s greatest cricketer ever, Bart King and recognizes our members who, despite not having a ‘cricket background’ chose to learn the game and compete in college.
