Iowa State defeat U of Buffalo in TV match ! Photos – Mid West Semis !
In another first American College Cricket and TV Asia televised the first ever cricket match from a college campus in the US. College-level sports has been the “grass roots” of all major American sports so bring televised cricket on a college campus is another huge step in the sports development.
The Mid West regional Championship sponsored by Coca Cola involved Carnegie, Mellon,Penn State,College of Wooster, Iowa State,University at Buffalo, University of Iowa and the hosts, Ohio State University playing for the Gordon Gee Trophy. The Semi-Finalists were Iowa State Cyclones vs Buffalo Bulls, and Iowa Hawkeyes vs Ohio State Buckeyes.
In damp conditions Buffalo won the toss and chose to field. Dense fog blanketed the field when the players arrived, and play began an hour late. Sannel Patel and Aditya Ashok opened for Iowa state and had a good start before the first wicket fell at 25 off 4.1 overs. Wickets fell steadily as the thick damp outfield made it difficult to get 2s or 3s.
Ganesha Upadhaya, coming low in the order made 46 off 41 balls with 2 sixes and 1 four as the Iowa State Cyclones got a respectable 127 in their 19 overs.
Gunkreet Dhillon and Anirudh Reddy set the stage for Buffalo with an opening partnership of 32 in 5.5 overs and after 6 overs Buffalo was scoring at exactly the same rate as Iowa State had. But by the 10, Iowa State was putting the brakes on, and Buffalo had 57 to Iowa State’s 70 at the same stage.
Aman Bhattia, at # 7, struck 30*,2 fours and 1 six, but it was not enough and at the end of their overs Buffalo made 115, and Iowa State won by 12 runs.
