Shiv Chanderpaul in New York City !
Flying 15 hours from Bangladesh where he played in the BPL, Shiv Chanderpaul stopped briefly in New York City to met with me.
Long lines and delays at Customs, and Immigration at the airport meant Shiv only had just over an hour to meet. As I arrived at the home of Andy Thakoorpersad, brother of his Manager, they were having a late breakfast of Bake and Salfish, a Guyanese specialty. It couldn’t be better, I joined in (and had some to take away !).
We chatted, and it was a delight to see this great cricketer, who had accomplished so much, speak of my brothers, Errol and Michael, and my cousins Moses and Richard, and Uncle Harry.
Chanderpaul, from the age of 13, hung out with my brother Errol and cousins Moses and Richard, and played cricket with them. Shiv lived part of each week with the Jodahs at 126 Regent St, so he could play top level cricket.
From NYC, Shiv had to fly to Orlando, then Guyana to visit his son Brandon, then to Barbados for a Fitness test (in preparation for the matches vs Australia). In Barbados he will play a 4 day game for Guyana against Barbados, then fly to Trinidad to play against T & T.
Amidst all this flying he said he would try to do some running !
We finished breakfast as the TV Asia crew came over, and we did a brief interview with Shiv about his involvement and support of American College Cricket – to be aired on TV Asia. Chanderpaul was happy about TV Asia becoming the Exclusive Broadcasting Media Partner of American College Cricket and to see Coca Cola be a sponsor.
Photos were taken, and it was off to JFK Airport for the great Shivnarine Chanderpaul ! Will he be in Florida for the Championship ? Tune in to TV Asia to find out !
