Rutgers’ Mital Patel takes 6 for 35, including Hat-trick in USA win!
2011 has been a big year for fast bowler Mital Patel, in February he was selected for the USA Under 19 team in the ICC Americas Qualifier for the 2012 U19 World Cup. In March he represented Rutgers University in the national Championship, the American College Cricket Spring Break Championship.
He took 2 wickets for 9 runs on his national debut and followed it up with 3 w for 9 runs, earning Man of the Match in the next game.
At the 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship his team Rutgers University did not perform to expectations, but Patel loved the experience,
“I had played before with Rutgers captain Nisarg Choksi. It was exciting to play with my fellow students and everyone was very welcoming and made me feel like I’m part of the team very quickly. Before coming to Rutgers I had read about American College Cricket and that Rutgers had won the Northeast Championship.
It’s amazing to me to be able to play cricket for my college and it was incredible to see a college cricketer (Ian Carlin) in Sports Illustrated and Hardik Jogani ( the Rutgers Cricket Club President) featured on the Rutgers website! “
Mital then spent part of his summer in India and England. He was in India during the IPL, and practiced with the Mumbai Indians, getting the honor of bowling to icon, Sachin Tendulkar !
Patel just finished his freshman year at Rutgers where he is studying for a Finance and Medicine Double Major, ”I wanted to choose something that would combine a branch of business with the field of medicine,” he explained.
Mital started playing cricket at the age of 9, he said “I decided to try cricket because it was something my dad played. My dad played county cricket in England and helped me learn the basics when I was young.”
At age 11, he started playing formal cricket with the regular season ball (hard ball) and also began competing in national Under 13 and Under-15 tournaments.
In 2006 Mital played for the USA team that won the Americas Cup at the Under-15 level.
USA vs AFGHANISTAN : Today Mital Patel took 6 wickets wickets for 35 runs in 8.2 overs including a hatrick ! Patel’s bowling enabled the USA Under 19s to restrict the Afghans Under 19s to 183 in 41.2 overs.
Notably in the two USA losses Patel was not brought back into the attack at moments when he could have made a difference.
Afghanistan then made it tough for the USA batsmen, despite another swashbuckling 49 from in form Steven Taylor. The game came down to the last over when Jhobir Singh struck a 4 to give USA the victiory !.
CANADA vs NAMIBIA.
Yesterday Namibia narrowly lost to USA but today they fought all the way to a victory over Canada’s Under 19s. Nikhil Dutta scored a brilliant century for Canada.
Canada made 236 for 8 in 50 overs, whilst Namibia made 241 for 7 in 48.5 in another tight game.
