2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship-for the national title !
American College Cricket was begun in November 2008, and had its first national Championship, the American College Cricket Spring Break Championship, in March 2009 – covered by the New York Times. This Championship featured 5 teams, 4 of them created specifically for the Championship. The Champions received the Chanderpaul Trophy, named after International superstar Shiv Chanderpaul who endorsed the Championship.
American College Cricket was the first USA cricket body to establish a significant Facebook presence which has influenced others to follow.
For the March 2010 Championship 20 teams, most newly created, took part and the Washington Post did a Front Page story on 2009 Champions Montgomery College. Voice of America covered the Championship and Canada’s # paper, Globe & Mail, featured the 2010 Champions,York University. 47 games were played in the largest cricket tournament ever. The NY Daily News did many stories that year.
The Semis & the Finals were webcast, and the link carried by the International Cricket Council (ICC),USA Cricket, Cricket Canada, American College Cricket & more. This was the FIRST live video broadcast ever of any American domestic cricket.
In Fall 2010 American College Cricket there were 5 regional Championships, involving 30 universities – the Midwest, Northeast, Mid Atlantic, Southeast & West Coast-, and a Canadian Universities & Colleges tournament, which was played for the Ramnaresh Sarwan Trophy. The LA Daily News covered the West Coast Championship & the media of every member school of American College Cricket now has written about their cricket team.
In October 2010 College of Wooster featured cricket as its Homecoming Game, and at the end of the year Wooster’s Ian Carlin was named one of the 5 College Cricket Players of the Year & Winner of the John Bart King Award, which led to him appearing in Sports Illustrated.
The 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship will be played March 15- 20 in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. Fields to be used include the “American College Cricket” Stadium & its 2 sidefields, and Brian Piccolo Park. About 60 games will be played, and at least the Semis and Finals, possibly more, will be broadcast live.
1 – Schedule -THE DRAWING TO DETERMINE WHO PLAYS WHO WILL BE DONE BY CHEERLEADERS & WILL BE WEBCAST LIVE IN MID-FEBRUARY, ON A DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED.
2. Games begin March 15, 8 am on the Stadium sidefields.
3. OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY – 8 pm March 15, at the Stadium. All teams must be in uniforms. The ceremony will be videotaped, for broadcast & news reports. Media & VIP’s will be present.
5 . March 19, Sat night BIG American College Cricket Awards night. Dress will be formal (Jacket & tie)
6 – Semis & Finals – March 20, 9 am. At the “American College Cricket” Stadium, at Central Broward Regional Park. These games will be broadcast live on the web & possibly TV. Tentative start time for the Finals is 6 pm.
7. ALL teams must wear colored uniforms, in school colors, with school logos. Teams not possessing uniforms must contact Lloyd Jodah immediately. No UN-authorized logos or company names on uniforms permitted.
8. An All America team, & an All Canada team will be selected following the Championship for the “1844 Series” , a revival of the USA vs Canada cricket rivalry first played in 1844. The “1844 Series” will be broadcast live.
9. There will be Reporters at the CBRP fields & at Brian Piccolo writing reports on all games.
10. Press Release announcing the participating teams will be in a few days.
