<p><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">by Lloyd Jodah</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I met Ravin Moorthy in 2008. Later, in early 2010 Ravin played a significant role in Toronto&#8217;s York University participating in the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship.</span> </p>
<p>My goal was to stimulate the development of cricket at the University level in cricket &#8211; Ravin immediately understood my vision and encouraged York University, which came, saw, and conquered, winning the Chanderpaul Trophy.</p>
<p>Indicative of his cricket foresight, Ravin joined the American College Cricket Advisory Board, and put the webcasts of the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship on the Cricket Canada website.</p>
<p>York U Cricket was catapulted onto the pages of Canada&#8217;s top newspaper, Globe &amp; Mail, and into the University media. York U stars such as Khushroo Wadia and Raza Rehman have been selected to play for Canada. </p>
<p>A Canadian Universities tournament was started, and I began more teams at McGill and Queens University. Ravin was particularly pleased when I started the team at McGill, his alma mater. McGill was later was featured on CBC, and Ryerson is now a new strong force. </p>
<p>It is with pleasure therefore we see Ravin Moorthy was elected as the new President of Cricket Canada ! </p>
<p>In brief remarks on Monday, Cricket Canada’s new President was grateful for the responsibility given by the board. </p>
<p><em>“I would like to thank the Board of Directors for showing their confidence in me to lead Cricket Canada through this important period of growth and development.  Cricket is cross-cultural, generational, and connects millions of Canadians in communities across the country.  Cricket Canada will be calling on all stake holders including Canadian Corporations and the Government of Canada to support the organization through these exciting next steps.”</em> </p>
<p>Ravin is the first Albertan to assume the post of President and has established a solid reputation for consistent success in both program &amp; portfolio managment and organisational governance.  He has held multiple executive positions within Cricket Canada, Cricket Alberta, and the Calgary &amp; District Cricket League and is a member of the American College Cricket Advisory Board, during a period of 15 years volunteer service to the sport in Canada.</p>
<p>Ravin Moorthy is a graduate of McGill University.                                    <a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Ravin1.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-9087" title="Ravin1" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Ravin1.jpg" alt="" width="196" height="300" /></a></p>

Our aims are simple, to keep alive a dying art of skill, craftsmanship and produce some of the finest and high performing handmade cricket bats money can buy.&#8221; </span> </p>
<div>Safbats will custom make a bat according to the <strong><em>personal specifications</em></strong> of the Best Batsman of the 2012 American College Cricket Championship, to top International standards, according to Safbats Marketing Director Marcus Charman, a man who is extremely passionate about bats and cricket.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The honor of getting the custom made Safbats&#8217; bat goes to hard hitting opener Khushroo Wadia (York University &amp; Canada), declared the Best Batsman of the 2012 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Khushroo came into 2012 having struck 6 fifties in 10 innings in American College Cricket. This Spring Break he had scores of  34,113, 22, 52 and 32 . He recorded the only century of this Championship with 11 fours, 9 sixes for 98 runs in boundaries out of his 113. His aggregate was 253 at an average of 50.6.  </div>
<div> </div>
<div>As part of the opening pair with Jai Patel, Wadia set the tone for York University Lions innnings and always played a major role in the victories that got the Lions to the final four. When he was out for 32 in the Semi finals against University of South Florida, hope seemed lost for York U.  <a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Khushroo1.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-9050" title="Khushroo" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Khushroo1-300x231.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="231" /></a></div>
<div> </div>
<div>Khushroo is a 2012 All Canada selection, and a 2011 College Player of the Year. At the 2011 Championship he scored 58, 28, 67 and 65 (tied with Adrian Gordon,NYU-Poly for most runs) for a total of 218, average 54.5 !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>In 2010, with Jai Patel, propelling York University&#8217;s Championship run, he scored  4, 75*, 38,22, 78 and 54 for a total of 271, average 54.2 !   </div>
<div> </div>
<div>His aggregate in all American College Cricket innings is 742 at an average of 53, with 1 century &amp; 7 fifties !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>His performances in 2010 &amp; 2011 propelled him into the spotlight, earning him selection to play for Canada where his scores included 2 50&#8242;s.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Just as important as the above, Khushroo Wadia has been an ambassador for American College Cricket, and promotes our movement. </div>

<div data-jsid="message">The first Semi Finals of the American College Cricket Spring Break Championship was shown on TV Asia Saturday evening to rave reviews.</div>
<div data-jsid="message"> </div>
<div data-jsid="message">York University&#8217;s Jaiveer Chauhan said, &#8220; I made all my friends watch it ! and made like 8 people order the channel as well,</div>
<div data-jsid="message">
<div data-jsid="message">it was top stuff ! This will really take the game to another level in our countries. And you and Saad make a top class commentary panel.<br />
Watching the bowlers running up from the front was cool, instead of seeing the boring batsmen waiting for the ball.&#8221;</div>
<div data-jsid="message"> </div>
<div data-jsid="message">American College Cricket President explained, &#8220;I&#8217;ve always thought the fast bowlers should be filmed running in, close up from the front, instead of running away from the cameras &#8211; this helps convey the excitement of the bowler charging in &#8211; then cutting to the batsman, thereby simulating the split second the batsman had to react to a fast bowler ! </div>
<div data-jsid="message">International cricket misses a tremendous opportunity to show one of the most thrilling sights in the game by not filming it this way.&#8221;</div>
<div data-jsid="message"> </div>
<div data-jsid="message">The match itself pitted 2 of the strongest teams historically in American College Cricket against each other &#8211; York University were Champions in 2010, whilst University of South Florida made the Finals in 2009, Semis in 2010 and Quarters in 2011.</div>
<div data-jsid="message"> </div>
<div data-jsid="message">Both had excellent opening pairs, Khushroo Wadia &amp; Jai Patel for York U, and Sai Ramesh and Ashgar Sheikh for USF Bulls &#8211; the game would likely hinge on the opening pair for both sides.</div>
<div data-jsid="message"> </div>
<div data-jsid="message">USF captain Nirav Shah won the toss and elected to bat despite the damp dewy conditions. With Sai Ramesh hitting the ball arrogantly and well, USF was scoring at nearly 10 runs an over before Sheikh was caught by wicketkeeper Tristan Ali for 22 (23 balls 3 fours) off Tehseen Shah ending the partnership of 58 in 6.1 overs.</div>
<div data-jsid="message"> </div>
<div data-jsid="message">Ramesh slowed down a bit before he too went caught behind by Ali for 42 off Shah for 42 (27 balls 5 fours,1 six). Ramesh had delighted with flicks off the legs and cuts.</div>
<div data-jsid="message"> </div>
<div data-jsid="message">Leg spinner Jaiveer C, and pacer Arsalan Qadir also bowled well and Shah,Jaiveer and Qadir each ended with 2 wickets.</div>
<div data-jsid="message"> </div>
<div data-jsid="message">Ashgar Sheikh then struck a major blow by swinging one in, and bowling Jai Patel in the first over.</div>
<div data-jsid="message"> </div>
<div data-jsid="message">Wadia straight drove, on drove, and cover drove to the boundary without a fielder moving, whilst York U was losing wickets at the other end.</div>
<div data-jsid="message"> </div>
<div data-jsid="message">With his seeming awkward action Nirav Shah was troubling the York batsmen and when he got Khushroo to cut at one outside the offstump in the air, Prashant Pal took the catch to make York U Lions 51 for off 6.4 overs.</div>
<div data-jsid="message"> </div>
<div data-jsid="message">When Canada Under 19 player Tristan Ali was out at 91 for 8 in 14.5 overs it seemed all over for the Lions but fast bowler Zubair Zia 32* (22 balls,1 four 1 six) and Tehseen Shah 15 had a rearguard action which brought York U close and 17 runs were needed off the last over !</div>
<div data-jsid="message"> </div>
<div data-jsid="message">Ultimately the University of South Florida Bulls got the win by 10 runs.</div>
<div data-jsid="message"> </div>
<div data-jsid="message">Cricket in America and Canada got a huge win, by the first class production put on by TV Asia and the large crew it brought in, including Riverview Studios, which had done the games in New York last October.</div>
<div data-jsid="message"> </div>
<div data-jsid="message">American College Cricket has brought cricket in the US into the 21st century.</div>

<div>This Saturday at 7 pm on TV Asia the cricket world will be astounded, by the first class TV play by play coverage of the first American College Cricket 2012 Semi Finals.</p>

<div>The graphics, slow motion replays,commentary,3rd umpire replays for run outs &amp; stumpings,and the overall 9 cameras professional production will vault North American cricket coverage into a new sphere, on a level comparable to other American sports coverage, and International cricket.   </div>
<div> </div>
<div>American College Cricket set another precedent in Oct 2011 when TV Asia televised 6 games, now this production will be 500 % better, with a crew of over 30 people working on it. Coca Cola is a sponsor of American College Cricket in 2012.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>It&#8217;s expected the two teams York University and University of South Florida will have viewing parties in halls on campus &#8211; and students from the schools and neighboring colleges will be invited.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>One of the largest Malls in North America, Square One Mall will be showing the match on its Jumbotrons, just as it did the Semis and Finals in 2010, thanks to the York University Captain Hassan Chogthai. Thousands of Canadians will once again see American College Cricket excitement!</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Square One Mall gets over 21 million customers annually, and I&#8217;ve loved shopping there on every one of my many visits to Mississauga,Canada.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Hopefully the restaurants, stores and hotels of the desi population will follow Square One&#8217;s example and put the matches on.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The 2 teams are 2 of the strongest in American College Cricket. York University boasts the best opening pair at any level in north America, in Jai Patel and Khushroo Wadia. Wadia has the most runs in American College Cricket and has played for Canada, scoring two 50&#8242;s.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Fast bowler Arsalan Qadir has played for Canada in the Under 19 2010 World Cup.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>University of South Florida has been one of the top teams each year, making the Semis practically every time.In Sai Ramesh they have one of the best batsmen in the US. Ramesh recently spent 3 months training with a Ranji Trophy team in India.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Ashgar Sheikh and Ramesh have been 2 of the top all rounders in the Championship, and the team has been practicing by playing against former Test stars like Faood Bacchus.</div>

Ryerson Rams, led by 2012 &#8220;Leadership Award&#8221; winner Hassan Mirza, then came to the American College Cricket Northeast Championship, which featured 10 regional schools, and won that title.</p>
<p>Preparations immediately began for the Rams to come to the Spring Break Championship, which this year was sponsored by Coca Cola.</p>
<p>York U Lions in the meantime was seeing their American College Cricket success leading to opportunities for their star players: Khushroo Wadia was selected to represent Canada, then later Raza Rehman and Rustam Bhatti got the nod. In fact Rehman and Bhatti are currently on tour with Canada at the ICC t20 World Cup, and so missing the Spring Break Championship.</p>
<p>In the group stages both teams looked professional and strong, and either appeared to be a contender for the Chanderpaul Trophy.</p>
<p>By the previously announced formula the 2 teams met in the Quarter Finals for a highly anticipated battle. Ryerson was playing its first game at the CBRP Cricket Stadium, whilst York University was looking for revenge !</p>
<p>The best opening pair in USA &amp; Canada, Khushroo Wadia and Jai Patel then got York U off to an incredible start with a century partnership. Jai Patel himself is an American resident, and hoping to play for the USA.</p>
<p>Refreshed with Powerade,left hander Jai Patel stroked 56 (6 fours, 2 sixes) and right handed Wadia hit 53 (5 fours,3 sixes) before pacer Sufi Chaudhary got them both. But the pair had done enough on the large Stadium field, and with York skipper Hassan Chogthai adding 31 (2 fours, 3 sixes) the Lions posted a formidable 169 for 7 wickets in 20 overs.</p>
<p>Though Ryerson lost the early wicket of Kyle Edgehill,Farhan Khan 34 (3 fours) and skipper Hassan Mirza 13 steadied the ship and Ryerson looked threatening. However astute bowling changes at both the Coca Cola and Dish Network ends by York University kept the wickets falling, and Ryerson Rams were all out for 126 in 19.5 overs. Noman Aslam contributed 18, and Rayyan Pathan 11.</p>
<p>Tehseen Shah, who just made the squad, swung the ball well, and has been the bowling find for York University.</p>
<p>All of York&#8217;s bowlers, Jaiveer Chauhan, Hassan Chogthai, Zubair Zia, Hasan Adil,Tehseen Shah and Arsalan Qadir shared wickets, as York University savored sweet revenge over Ryerson University, and advanced to the final four, for the 2nd time in 3 years.</p>
<p>Watch York University play the University of South Florida in the Semi Finals on Saturday, March 24 on TV Asia. TV Asia is available in the USA &amp; Canada on ALL major cable systems and Dish Network.</p>

<div>The top run scorer of American College Cricket&#8217;s 3 national Championships has been York University’s Khushroo Wadia, who scored the most runs in the 2010 and 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championships (6 half centuries in 10 innings).</div>
<div> </div>
<div>This propelled him into the spotlight, and contributed to his selection to make his international debut for Canada.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>
<div>In the Finals of the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship, Khushroo put on 76 for the opening partnership with Jai Patel, then batted nearly the entire innings for 54 runs, before being run out at the end with York U on 162 – they scored 163 for 6 in their 20 overs,and became the Champions !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>York University&#8217;s American College Cricket win gave cricket at the University level a rebirth in Canada, and increased opportunities for young Canadian cricketers. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>At the 2010 Championship Khushroo had scores of 4, 75*, 38,22, 78 and 54 for a total of 271, average 54.2.</div>
</div>
<div> </div>
<div>At the March 2011 Spring Break Championship he smashed 58, 28, 67 and 65 (tied with Adrian Gordon,NYU-Poly for most runs) for a total of 218, average 54.5 . Just about the same as 2010 ! His total in American College Cricket is 10 ins,1 not out, 489 runs, average 54.33 !  </div>
<div>
<div> </div>
<div>It has truly been a priviledge to watch Khushroo and Jai Patel, a left hander who is an exquisite stroker of the ball, play many delightful opening partnerships for York University &#8211; they are unquestionably the best opening pair we have !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>
<div>On his debut in 2011 for Canada, Khushroo smashed 40 runs, 5 fours and 1 six, before he was out with Canada on 62 runs. Among his other scores for Canada were 56,75* and 37. His 56 was against USA and included 8 fours &amp; a 6 in 32 balls!  A bad knee has affected his training since. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Khushroo was selected for the &#8220;All American team” (comprised of the best American College Cricket players) in 2010 and 2011. Very powerfully built and one of the hardest hitters of the ball, Wadia is a technically correct batsman who plays a lot of his cricket in the Toronto District Association league.</div>
</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Khushroo&#8217;s off the field efforts include being a prolific poster of AmericanCollegeCricket.com articles on Facebook &#8211; carrying out one of the mandates of our members that&#8217;s most important. He often asks what more he can do for American College Cricket. </div>
</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Back in March 2010 Khushroo had the pleasure of playing on the first webcast of domestic cricket in the USA and Canada when American  College Cricket broadcast 3 games, he said his friends and family in Toronto and Kuwait watched,</div>
<div><em>    &#8220;American College Cricket Media coverage is the best ! My parents saw the Finals (in 2010) in Kuwait on the webcast – thank you for that !<br />
     As a result Cricket Canada is giving more recognition to college cricket.&#8221;</em></div>
<div><em></em> </div>
<div>Khushroo is currently finishing his degree in business whilst studying for the CGA (Canada&#8217;s equivalent to the CPA).</div>
<div> </div>
<div>
<div>Five College Cricket Players of the Year 2011 will be declared, in no special order. Selection criteria includes off the field and on the field performances. </div>
<div><a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Khush1.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-8175" title="Khush1" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Khush1-300x232.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="232" /></a></div>

<div>American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah said, &#8220;Congratulations to Ryerson and we hope to see them in Florida. It&#8217;s great to see our guys at York University get to the Finals -as 2010 American College Cricket Champions they have set the bar high for Canadian schools.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>A superb performance too by Sheridan College &#8211; we look forward to seeing them in March. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>McGill University has a unique position in sports history in the USA and Canada, having played key roles in the beginnings of football, basketball and hockey.</div>
