A record-setting feat, made possible by CricHQ’s scoring app & Competition Management module as 28 colleges competed for the Shiv Chanderpaul Trophy.

UMBC wins Mid Atlantic in 6th match of TV season & celebrates Gangnam-style!

With 2 high powered batting line ups the Mid Atlantic Finals between UMBC and Montgomery College shaped up to be a run fest at the British Officers’ Cricket Club in Pennsylvania, aglow in hues of autmn gold, rust,browns and red. The Finals was the 6th match of the season on TV Asia .

Adil Bhatti MC top scorer in 3 innings including 80* vs LIU-Brooklyn, and Eraj Abidi 77 vs Virginia Tech were leading contenders for tournament MVP. Montgomery College was 2009 National Champions & 2011 National Finalist, whilst UMBC was a 2010 Final Four.

But just like a New England Patriots vs Green Bay Packers game turning into a defensive battle, so it was the bowling and fielding played a huge role in this one.

Montgomery batted first and got off to a good start when alum Sadiq Naseer,12 and Wahab Syed,27 put on 33 in 5.4 overs. The UMBC Captain Rikin Parikh took the break through, and a run out made MC 49 for 4 after 10.4 overs.

But with Adil Bhatti at the crease,hope was alive in the Montgomery camp especially when Bhatti confidently hit a 6 over long on. Then Sam Lalzare struck with a direct throw to stumps, and the slow motion replay confirmed that a diving Bhatti just missed getting in, and was run out for 18 ! MC 80 for 5 in 14.3 ! At the end of their 20 overs the Raptors managed 106 for 9.

Set 107 at 5.3 runs per over UMBC seemed a foregone winner, and left handed Anand Patel stroked the ball well for his 21 with 2 fours and 1 six. Two quick wickets by MC captain Udit Sehgal made it 38 for 2, and gave the Raptors some hope especially with some excelelnt fielding. But Raghav Bhardwaj 27*, and Digit Samant, 37* got the 107 required in 14.5 overs at 7.21 rpo. Samant struck 3 fours & 2 sixes, Bhardwaj 1 four & 2 sixes.

The University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) Retreivers, led by captain Rikin Parikh got their first title and became the 2012 Mid Atlantic Regional Champion !

Adil Bhatti cracked 80* for Montgomery College vs LIU-Brooklyn and Eraj Abidi smashed 77 for UMBC against Virginia Tech, in the Semis. Now this Saturday these 2 batsmen, and the power batting of their teams will go at each other in the Finals of the American College Cricket Mid Atlantic Championship !

If this were College Football it would be a Bowl game – maybe the Gangnam Bowl ! So tune in to TV Asia at 7 pm, Saturday Nov 24 for the exciting matchup of two powerful batting attacks :

The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Cricket team is one of the most experienced in American College Cricket and reached the final four of the National Championship in March 2010. However in 2 other Nationals, & 2 other Regionals the club has not lived up to its potential and came to the 2012 Mid Atlantic regional determined to win.

Virginia Tech is another experienced team that entered this tournament still looking for American College Cricket success. Virginia Tech even has its own cricket pitch & field with lights. Both teams are well matched in talent and experience, and highly motivated but only one can get through to the Finals, as they battle for the right to do so.

The scene of the exciting action is the British Officers Cricket Club in Evansburg,Pennsylvania. Fall foliage lend a truly magnificent and unique backdrop for cricket as can be seen at 7 pm on TV Asia,on Saturday Nov 3. on all major cable systems in the USA & Canada.

Commentators incude Jamie Lloyd from New Zealand & CricHQ and Lloyd Jodah, founder & President of American College Cricket and selected students doing color commentary.

The 5 American College Cricket games broadcast so far in USA & Canada have been historic and groundbreaking – with 1 more to come for this Fall season – this Saturday at 7pm., York College vs NJIT.

No one else has so far even come close to televising domestic cricket in the USA and Canada.

With each broadcast the games on TV Asia look better and better – the camera people, though new to cricket, capture the action better. The added slow motion replays now bring the matches closer to the top level. The graphics and scores are more detailed with each game.

The commentary has been good, with Andre Kirton, Aoun Jaffarey (Indian U), Risabh Natarajan (NYU-Poly) and Hammad Rana (Indian U) joining myself, Lloyd Jodah for the York College vs Penn State match.

UMBC vs NJIT : This game went down to the very last ball !

For NJIT Ravi and Captain Prem Bhagavati got the team off to a great start, putting on 54 in 6 overs. Then Taha alli got the breakthrough for UMBC, taking the wickets of both openers in his first over.

A partnership of 34 steadied the NJIT Highlanders somewhat, but NJIT never really capitalised on their great start. Three wickets fell at 101 and NJIT were all out for 107.

Taha Ali took 3 wickets for 18 runs in 4 overs, Raghav Bharadwaj 2 wickets for 14 in 3, whilst Sumeet Chordiya chipped in with 1 wicket for 24 in his 4 overs. There were 3 run outs.

UMBC struggled batting, and at the end of the powerplay (after 5 overs) UMBC was 23 for 3 compared to NJIT’s 48 for 0 at the same point.

Raghav Bharadwaj took it to the NJIT bowlers though, and struck 32 before he was 4th out with UMBC on 35 !

Somehow UMBC got closer and closer to the NJIT total, and going into the final over 11 runs were needed ! A four meant 7 runs in 5 balls, and finally 2 runs to win on the last ball, or 1 to tie !

The New Jersey boys got the wicket on the final ball to snatch victory from the boys from Maryland !

PENN STATE vs YORK COLLEGE :

The Penn State Nitany Lions batted first against the York College Cardinals and struggled. Varun Kullkarni however played a superb innings of 32, which included 2 magnificent cuts off Hugo D’Oliveira for sixes, as well as more exquisite strokes before getting run out.

Penn State made 84. Karan Ganesh bowled a great spell of 3 overs for 3 runs, taking 3 wickets. Hugo D’Oliveira, Suleman Mohammed & Bilal Shahid each chipped in with a wicket each, whilst opening bowler Yasneen Khan bowled a good spell, and took 2 very good catches in the deep.

Jasim Ahmed had 2 run outs.

It was going to be tough for Penn State to defend 84 as a total, Rishab Bahel gave it his all, striking 4 times, including taking 3 wickets in his 2nd over. Rishabh finished with 4 overs, 15 runs and 4 wickets.

However in the 2nd over of the match Raghav Agarwal gave the game away, bowling 6 ful ltosses to Akeem Dodson who dispatched then all o the boundary for 4s and sixes ! 40 runs were scored off the over, which included a noball and wide !

Dodson was out for 32, made in 8 balls (3 sixes & 3 fours) ! Karan Ganesh, 22* in 9 balls ( 2 fours & 1 six) and Hugo D’Oliveira 14* (1 four & 1 six) wrapped up the victory for York College !

Next year TV Asia will televise at least 18 American College Cricket matches in their entirety, plus highlights from others, and reports on American College Cricket.

6 games will be televised from the American College Cricket Spring Break Championship, March 13 to 18.

4th Game on TV : UMBC vs NJIT this Sat ! Don’t miss this thriller !

The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Cricket club has been one of the top teams in the Washington/Maryland area for years. They won the Washington Metropolitan Cricket Board (WMCB) league’s T20 tournament 3 years in a row, before changing leagues and joining the Washington Cricket League (WCL).

In the WCL this year, UMBC made the Playoffs in both the 40 over and T20 competitions only losing in the Quarter finals to the eventual winners of both competitions.

The competition has been tougher in American College Cricket however, and UMBC has not found that kind of success in its 3 tournaments so far – the team wants to change that badly.

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Highlanders Cricket club got started for the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship, and have steadily improved, making the semis of the Northeast Championship.

Teams are allowed to play in multiple regionals in this early stage of American College Cricket, if they are logistically able to, in order to increase the amount of cricket they play- this gave NJIT another opportunity to go for a title.

The 4th in a historic season of cricket on TV by American College Cricket – the game was played, and recorded for TV – to be shown at 7 pm on TV Asia on Saturday November 19. What a game it was, coming down to the very last ball !

American College Cricket is providing cricket fans with new teams to learn about, and support – instead of the same 9 over and over again ! World cricket needs an infusion of new blood to get fans excited !

So watch UMBC Highlanders, captained by Gurnish Singh, vs NJIT Retreivers captained Prem Bhagavati, on TV Asia this Saturday at 7 pm ! TV Asia is available on all major cable systems and Dish Network.

UMBC – Building to the American College Cricket Mid-atlantic Championship !

With a win over Taurids CC last Saturday, UMBC has made it to the playoffs of the Washington Cricket League Division 2. UMBC stands at 8-4-1.

UMBC started off the season with a washed out game, but not before they had scored 224 Runs, in their allotted 40 overs and reduced their opponents, Stars CC, to 35/2 in 7 overs. Rain intervened in the 8th over, and the match was called off. During the washed out match, Eraj Abidi scored 50 for UMBC.

UMBC continued with the good form by winning next three matches. Captain Gurnish Singh led from the front by contributing useful 65 not out against Metro II. He followed his good form with an awesome 102 and took 3 wickets against Taurids CC to keep UMBC’s dominance in Division 2 of WCL. Samuel Lalzare weighed in against Urbana by scoring his first century (116 nout out), and took UMBC to the top of the division with a 3-0 record.

UMBC suffered their first loss in the fifth match against Elite CC. UMBC’s bowling was unable to defend 201 against cautious Elite batting line-up.

In the next match, UMBC came back strong by scoring 212 against Falcons CC. Rikin Parikh, under pressure and recovering from his leap of faith from 14000 feet the previous day, jet propelled to his score of 98. Gurnish, captain cool, finished it off by taking 4 wickets. With this performance, Gurnish was leading the All Rounders table in the league.

UMBC lost its next game against the Fighters CC even though scoring 260, their highest score at that time, due to poor bowling performance. UMBC’s opening batsman, Digant Samant, scored his second half century in the losing effort. UMBC record was reduced to 4-2.

UMBC’s strong batting line-up continued to dominate, and piled up 267, their highest score in the league, against the Potomac CC. Digant Samant, once again, made a strong statement by scoring his first century for UMBC. Vice-captain Chirag Vani, who aptly supported Digant by scoring his maiden half century (60). They were involved in the highest highest 4th wicket partnership of 186 runs for UMBC.

UMBC lost the next match against AFCA by 36 runs as its batting, for the first time, failed perform up to its potential. UMBC’s batting line-up crashed landed with 145 all out. At this stage in the league, UMBC’s record was 5 wins, 3 losses and 1 no result (due to rain).

UMBC increased their chances to make it to the playoffs by winning next two games comfortably against Hunters CC and Knights CC. Digant Samant scored another 50 against the Hunters to add to his tally of two Fifties and a Century. Samuel Lalzare followed it up by adding another fifty to his tally and taking the UMBC to a victory lane against Hunters by 8 wickets.

UMBC followed up with their good run with a win against Knights CC by 6 wickets. Dhaval Vaghasia, UMBC leg spinner, bowled an awesome spell to take his first 4 wicket hall. He was supported well by the new opening bowler, Naga Perni, who took 3 wickets. Suryakant Sansare, top scored with 44, and Chirag Vani, scoring 32 not out, played cautiously to chase down the score of 170 comfortably.

UMBC stood at 7-3 in the Division II, and had to face Metro II again, who are in the same group. UMBC lost this game as Metro II successfully chased down the target of 196 set by UMBC. The match was reduced to 30 overs because of the scorching heat, the hottest day of the season so far with the heat index of 120 degrees.

Last Saturday, UMBC played their final match of their regular Division II matches against the Taurids CC. UMBC destroyed Taurids by allowing them a score of 95 all out in 22.1 overs. In its authoritative style, UMBC chased down the target, with a quickfire knock, in 13th over.

UMBC will play their QuarterFinals game Sunday August 7th…….GO UMBC !

In 1971 “Every Picture tells a Story” by Rock Legend Rod Stewart became the first album ever to top both the American & British Charts simultaneously. The album is “a mixture of rock, country, blues, soul, and folk ” and includes the huge hit “Maggie May” about many schoolboys’ fantasy.

Every picture from the 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship tells a story about the effort of the members of American College Cricket to raise the profile of the game and bring it back into the American & Canadian mainstream – keep spreading the photos on Facebook, and the word.
