<dd class="wp-caption-dd">1st College Cricket Hall of Fame inductee Shiv Chanderpaul &amp; Abdullah Sheikh (USF Bulls)</dd>
</dl>
<div>Here are the College Players of the Year 2012, the new, plus 2 repeat winners, in a year sponsored by Coca Cola !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>
<div><span><strong>Abdullah Ashgar Sheikh (USF)</strong> - for the past month Abdullah has had a great profile pic - the American College Cricket logo !</span></div>
<div> </div>
<div>Sheikh had a near- MVP performance in the 2012 Nationals. Bowling fast,he took 9 wickets for 115 runs. He scored 268 runs @ 47 runs average, with 3 fifties and a highest score of 88. He also took 5 catches. No wonder he got lots of votes from USF Bulls fans.</div>
<div>
<div> At the 2012 South East Regionals his top performances were 21*, 38* &amp; 3 for 9, &amp; 2 for 24.</div>
<div> </div>
</div>
<div>But it was his promotion of American College Cricket that gave Abdullah the edge, and made him THE College Player of the Year among the outstanding young athletes !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Over Christmas Sheikh got the privilege of playing with Shiv Chanderpaul, putting on a 80 run partnership in a friendly match.</div>
<div>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;</div>
<div> </div>
<div>
<div><strong>Divya Patel (ASU Red Wolves) </strong>- as an all rounder and Captain, Divya shouldered the heavy responsibilities of developing his new team, and getting them to the 2012 Nationals. Then, wanting to play in a Regional, once he heard 2 new colleges nearby had joined American College Cricket, he worked hard to organize the first South Central Regional.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Under Divya&#8217;s leadership, Arkansas State won the South Central Regional. Patel&#8217;s on field performances included 70* vs Memphis, and 2 for 27.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Divya was also a top vote getter but most importantly, its student-leaders like Divya Patel who make the American College Cricket movement successful. He is also a candidate for Top Newcomer, Top Club President, &amp; Arkansas State Cricket is a nominee for Top New Club !</div>
<div>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;</div>
<div> </div>
</div>
<div><strong>Anurag Verma (Texas A &amp; M)</strong> broke onto the scene at the 2012 South West Championship as an exciting left handed stroke player who made 44, 67 &amp; 54 with glorious strokes and was a big contributor to Texas A &amp; M winning the first South West Championship. The entire Texas A &amp; M club did a wonderful job of organizing the South West Regional, on their recently acquired cricket field.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>At the 2012 Nationals, his team, Texas A &amp; M extended their unbeaten streak to 11 matches as Verma helped his team even when he did not score big (e.g a 60 run opening partnership of which he scored 20).  He also bowled and had 2 for 25 as his best. In the Semis against York College he was run out for 12 as the Aggies lost. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Additionally Anurag&#8217;s Aggies team mates &amp; supporters set our Facebook Page afire early with votes for 2012 Player of the Year, and apparently his play impressed someone else, as he got married !</div>
<div>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-</div>
<div> </div>
</div>
<div> <strong>Mohammad Suleman (York College)</strong> is one of American College Cricket &#8216;s biggest promoters on Facebook, posting articles to his personal FB profile, as well as the York College group.</div>
<div><span style="color: #333333;"><br />
</span></div>
<div><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="color: #333333;"><a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/LaraSuleman1.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-10945" title="LaraSuleman" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/LaraSuleman1-300x187.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="187" /></a></span></span></p>
<div><span>In 2010, together with Lloyd Jodah,he started the York College club &amp; bowled medium pace,then came back in 2012 in a supporting role, and as a spin bowler. Here are his astonishing bowling stats in 2012 :</span></div>
<div> </div>
<div>Nationals &#8211; 4 for 18 vs Houston Cougars, 3 for 12 vs Auburn, 2 for 26 vs NYU-Poly, 3 for 16 vs Cleveland State, 2 for 10 vs Texas A &amp; M, 2 for 23 vs USF</div>
<div>North East Regionals -  2 for 21 vs Princeton, 4 for 14 vs Cornell, 4 for 7 vs Harvard, 1 for 23 vs Rutgers.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>His 2 wickets in the Finals, including  that of Championship MVP Sai Ramesh, effectively put the brakes on what seemed like a certain win for USF, earning Suleman the Finals MVP Award.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>His consistent promotion of American College Cricket on Facebook earned him the opportunity to meet Shiv Chanderpaul, Brian Lara, Clive Lloyd,Courtney Walsh and Jimmy Adams and he presented the American College Cricket/TV Asia Award to Brian Lara ! </div>
<div>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211; </div>
<div> </div>
<div><span><strong>Kartik Radhakrishnan (Virginia Tech) </strong>is a b</span>atsman and off spinner  on the Hokies team that participated in their first National Championship in March. Kartick had a number of key allround performances for the team in 2012:  2 for 19 vs Texas Tech, 21 and 2 for 13 vs Penn State and 50* and 2 for 19 vs UMBC.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div> </div>
<div>Most importantly the work of Kartik and the Club enabled Kartik to break new ground for cricket by being selected as <em>Virginia Tech Male Athlete of the Year 2011</em> (out of 31 VT Sports Clubs). The VT Cricket Club also is one of the few college clubs with its own cricket field.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>At first no votes came in for Kartik, but his supporters later voted in large numbers to boost his candidacy !</div>
</div>
<div><span style="color: #333333;">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-</span></div>
<div><span style="color: #333333;"><br />
</span></div>
<div>
<div>
<div><strong>Haider Ali (Rutgers)</strong> became the first cricket player to hit a century on TV in the US &amp; Canada smashing 119 in 47 balls at a strike rate of 253.19, hitting 11 sixes &amp; 9 fours against Boston University ! He followed it up with 53 in 36 balls vs York College in the Finals – both innings shown on TV Asia in all their splendor ! Ali made 0 &amp; 71 in the preliminary matches.</div>
<div>At the Spring Break Championship he scored 58, 54, 35 and 40 ! In 8 innings in 2012 he scored 430 runs, average 53.75, making<em>  Haider the  top scorer in college cricket in 2012.</em></div>
<div> </div>
<div>Disappointingly, though a favorite of his team, Haider got practically NO votes from Rutgers players and fans, but his batting was so outstanding that he had to be a College Player of the Year !  </div>
<div>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;</div>
<div> </div>
<div><strong>Harsh Desai (Ryerson University)</strong> - the Ryerson team included a 6&#8217;5 (Warren Rajroop) and a 6&#8217;3 (Rayyan Pathan) fast bowlers but it was Harsh Desai, at around 5&#8217;9 who bowled some superb bouncers, that resulted in wickets ! Not pitched that short, &amp; moving into the chest, they were very difficult to play &amp; Desai was the MVP of that North East tournament, taking 17 wickets !</div>
<div> </div>
</div>
</div>
<div>At the 2012 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship Harsh took 2 wickets for 7 runs, 3 for 6 runs and 2 for 10. In the Quarter Finals when he did not get wickets, Ryerson lost.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>A tremendous number of his supporters voted for Harsh to make him a 2012 College Player of the Year.</div>
<div><span style="color: #333333;">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;</span></div>
<div> </div>
<div>
<div>
<div>
<div><span><strong>Ricky Nayar (UF )</strong> averaged 114.5 in 7 innings in 2012, with highest scores of 68* and 88* ! (Ricky is one of our 10 Centurions, scoring 101* at the 2011 Nationals). He took 8 wickets at 7.34 runs &amp; a best of 3 for 16. He also wicket-keeps.</span></div>
<div> </div>
<div>A leader for the Gators from the beginning of their &#8220;season ball&#8221; team in 2010, the Gators batting has usually followed Nayar until the Finals of the 2012 South East Championship when Ricky failed but his teammates did the job.</div>
<div> <a href="http://mail.aol.com/37267-111/aol-6/en-us/Suite.aspx#"> </a></div>
<div>Nayar &amp; the Gator club has been featured in Gators media a number of times, and they are currently ranked # 2 once again in USA &amp; Canada. They work hard at participating in required club activities, such as working football games, to raise points and funds.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Gators fans supported Ricky by voting for him in large numbers, making him, together with Sai Ramesh, Adil Bhatti and Adrian Gordon repeat College Players of the Year !</div>
</div>
<div>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-</div>
<div> </div>
<div><span><strong>Sai Ramesh (USF)  </strong>was the MVP at the 2012 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship. In the Finals Ramesh was leading the USF charge for victory when he was out lbw - the professional way Ramesh took the decision (a correct one) that ended USF&#8217;s chances of winning the Chanderpaul Trophy, is as a testament to how the game should be played.</span></div>
<div>  </div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<div>Here are his stats from March &#8211; he was not able to play in Nov because of his MBA dissertation: </div>
<div>45  &amp;  2 for 12 , 64* &amp; 3 for 23, 46 &amp; 4 for 9 , 20 &amp; 0 for 9,42 &amp; 0 for 21, 42 &amp;  2 for 34 !               </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Bowling off spin, took 11 wickets for 108 runs. He scored 259 runs @ 51.8 runs average. Sai took 7 catches in front of and behind the wicket, and had 2 run outs !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Someone else also thought he was an MVP - he got married recently !</div>
<div>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;</div>
<div> </div>
<div>For the selection of the Players of the Year we added a new feature &#8211; fans were able to vote for the nominees (on the AmericanCollegeCricket.com Facebook Page) and this made even it more exciting as supporters of some players voted in large numbers !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>As in ALL American College Cricket Awards promotion of American College Cricket (especially on Facebook &amp; Twitter) is VERY important.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The intent is to have about 5 new, plus repeat College Players of the Year. Points accumulated plus voting made it too close to eliminate any of the Players chosen however, and we felt it was more important to honor the Players than to fit an arbitrary number. </div>
</div>

<div>Last Saturday TV Asia showed the 9th TV game of the American College Cricket season,sponsored by Coca Cola, at 7pm - Rutgers University vs York College ! </div>
<div> </div>
<div>So you start your innnings with a 88 run partnership in 8.3 overs and at 127 for 1 in 12.5 overs your runs per over (RPO) is 10 with Haider Ali, who scored 119 in his previous innings, on 53. Life seems great, as your team is doing this on TV Asia, and being seen all over the US &amp; Canada !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Nisarg Choksi (Rutgers) took successive 6s off Yasin Khan (York)&#8217;s opening over, and cleared the fence 5 times, plus 3 fours for 48 in 32 balls. Flicks, cover drives, pulls lighted up Gateway Field as Choksi made the normally excellent York bowling and fielding look as futile.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Word went out to Santa to avoid flying over the Gateway area as Rudolph &amp; the Reindeer were in danger of being hit by cricket balls !</div>
<div>When Haider Ali got the strike he too was Terminator-like, with 4 sixes &amp; 4 fours in his 53, getting out at 127. It would have been extraordinary for the other Rutgers batsmen to keep up the strike-rate and they didn&#8217;t &#8211; getting to 176 for 7 in their 20 overs. A strong total, and a possible match-winning one !   </div>
<div> </div>
<div>An excellent first over by Udit Patel, found some edges and Rutgers gave danger man Akeen Dodson a Christmas gift by dropping him - a crucial error ! Dodson, seemingly fueled by Powerade, made Rutgers pay by clearing the fence for 6 sixes in making 47 in 27 balls with 1 four ! His opening partnership of 89 with Shemas Rehman was marginally faster, at 8 overs than Rutgers&#8217; 88 in 8.3 !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Rehman, Santa-like in his red uniform, himself hit the ball with reindeer power for his 58 with 6 fours, then smashed his first of two 6s to bring up his 50 ! York&#8217;s 2nd wicket fell at 121 off 12.2, practically identical to Rutgers 127 for 2 off 12.5 !</div>
<div>Though Karan Ganesh got 31, wickets fell as Al Lalbhai struck 3 times,getting 3 for 29, and at 159 for 6 off 16.5 it was a nail-biting finish ! They had to hold the celebratory Egg Nog &#8211; York needed 19 in 18 balls !  </div>
<div> </div>
<div>However Hayat Sikander cracked 3 sixes to crush the hopes of Rutgers that they could upset the national Champions and Santa was bringing the Deryck Jodah Trophy to York College !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Once again York College had shown they could find a way to win, whilst Rutgers played so well, and came so close they could feel great about their chances at the National Championship in March ! Their performance also rocketed them up the Santa&#8217;s List (National Rankings) !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The best commentary of the season so far was provided by Jamie Paul Lloyd (of Crichq &amp; New Zealand) and Lloyd Jodah.</div>
<div>SCORECARD &amp; other stats :</div>

<p><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;"> </span></span>An autumn day that was surprisingly gorgeous for cricket saw the Boston University vs Rutgers rivalry heat up the TV Asia screens all over America and Canada ! </p>
<div>Sharp directing, nifty camera work &amp; close ups brought the viewers into the game and showed the intensity on the faces of the college players.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The interplay between the New Zealand voice of CricHQ&#8217;s Jamie Paul Lloyd &amp; American College Cricket&#8217;s Lloyd Jodah provided a knowledgeable backdrop for the excitement as Coca Cola and TV Asia brought the 7th match of the college cricket season into living rooms.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>BU&#8217;s Hayat Khan won the toss, &amp; chose to field. For Rutgers Nisarg Choksi &amp; Haider Ali opened the batting and put up another fifty partnership, which they&#8217;ve been doing since Nationals in March. They made 63 in 5.4 overs before Choksi was bowled by Hayat Khan for 9. Those numbers tell the tale of how Haider Ali tore into the bowling, smashing 6&#8242;s way out of the field. His cover drives for 6&#8242;s traveled about 90 meters, and were truly remarkable ! Ali&#8217;s 50 came in 21 balls !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>A century partnership (102) followed with A Trapasia (25) as Haider dominated the bowling with shots all around the wicket, finding the gaps, and launching the ball over the boundary. Haider&#8217;s 100 came off 39 balls, with 11 sixes &amp; 9 fours ! When he was out, he had made 119 in 47 balls out of his team&#8217;s 165 for 3 !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>For cricket in America &amp; Canada, 22 year old Rutgers student Haider Ali had set a record, he had scored a century on his debut on TV ! and he made the first century ever scored on TV in the US and Canada ! Frieda Pinto would have loved it, had she been there to see it.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Nevertheless one of the best shots of the match was Divyesh Gandhi&#8217;s cut off the back foot for 6 &#8211; it bulleted like a rocket way outside the boundary ! Rutgers made 210 for 6 in 20 overs and left Boston U a tough task.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Tejas Ajawane and Hayat Khan got BU off to a good start at 22 off 2.5 overs before Udit Patel struck, getting Khan, then taking 2 more quick wickets and Boston was 33 for 3 ! Shilpin Makwana, who captained BU in the first American College Cricket National Championship in 2009, joined Ajawane, and the 2 put on 59 runs before Makwana went caught off Gandhi, for 31 in 31 balls.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Ajawane continued the fight before getting out at 135 for 6, for 66 made off 44 balls with 4 fours &amp; 4 sixes !</div>
<div>Boston University showed their grit by getting to 152 for 7 off 20, but Rutgers had amassed too large a total, and earned the victory to go through to the American College Cricket North East Finals once more to play for the Deryck Jodah Trophy ! </div>
<div> </div>

<div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A Century on Test debut has always been a coveted accomplishment. </span></div>
<div> </div>
<div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For cricket in America there is a century on debut record that can never be beaten&#8230;..who was the first batsman to score a century on their debut on TV in the US &amp; Canada&#8230;.or who was the first batsman to score a century on TV in the US &amp; Canada EVER ? </span></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The answer will forever be Haider Ali of Rutgers University ! Just days after his 23rd birthday on Oct 7, Haider smashed 119 in 47 balls at a strike rate of 253.19, hitting 11 sixes &amp; 9 fours aginst Boston University ! When he got out the team were 165 for 3 in the Semis of the 2012 American College Cricket North East Championship, sponsored by Coca Cola !</span></div>
<div> </div>
<div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">He followed it up with 53 in 36 balls vs York College in the Finals &#8211; both innings to be seen on TV Asia in all their glory ! Ali made 0 &amp; 71 in the preliminary matches.</span></div>
<div> </div>
<div>Haider played tape ball cricket in Lahore,Pakistan and started &#8220;hard or season&#8221; ball aged 15 when he also became captain of his high school team (rock star Rod Stewart also captained his high school cricket team).  He said he played at &#8216;<em>Model Town Greens cricket club, where I practised regularly with Mohammad Yusuf, Salman Butt, Abdul Razzaq, Shoaib Akter and Kamran Akmal&#8217;.</em></div>
<div> </div>
<div>Haider attended Stevens Institute of Technology then transfered to Rutgers where he will graduate in 2013 with a degree in Engineering. He played in the 2011 North East Regionals and the 2012 Amercian College Cricket Spring Championship where he emerged as another young star,scoring 58, 54, 35 and 40 and giving Rutgers great starts with his Captain Nisarg Choksi. Haider is ecstatic to be a member of American College Cricket:</div>
<div> </div>
<div><em>&#8216;American College Cricket is doing a great job promoting cricket in the United States &#8211; its a great platform for the development of the game, just like other sports in America. Credit goes to Mr Jodah for giving 100% for the development of cricket, and for believing in us !</em></div>
<div><em>It felt great to see Rutgers media writing about Hardik Jogani (then Club President) and American College Cricket, and to have my friends say &#8216;I saw your name in the Daily Targum&#8221; ! So overall it feels great representing my college &#8211; it makes cricket feel American !&#8217;</em></div>
<div> </div>
<div>Rutgers under captain Choksi played really well against National Champion York College at the North East Regionals &#8211; what do you think of your team&#8217;s performance ?</div>
<div> </div>
<div><em>&#8216;It was really disappointing to come so close and lose. Frankly after putting up 176 we felt really confident of defending that total. Though we lost the team showed a lot of character throughout the Regionals, and this will give us a lot of confidence for the Nationals in March 2013.&#8217;</em></div>
<div><em> </em></div>
<div>In the meantime Haider works out to be in shape,and indulges a love for photography, even as he thinks of bringing the Chanderpaul Trophy to Rutgers.<a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/NEHaider.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-10758" title="NEHaider" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/NEHaider-300x231.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="231" /></a><a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Rutgers2012.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-10759" title="Rutgers2012" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Rutgers2012-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></a></div>

<div>Harvard Cricket Club&#8217;s performance is particularly noteworthy as its one of the colleges that cricket was played at in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It established an official club in 1862 and played until the 1920s. Motivated by American College Cricket Ibrahim Khan restarted the club in 2011, and now its set to play on TV challenging for the Deryck Jodah Trophy !</div>

But realized if I called an award &#8220;The Jodah Trophy&#8221; people would assume I was naming it after myself. </span> </p>
<div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Then 2 Sundays ago, I had dinner with my brother Colin Michael, at Boulder Creek Restaurant. We were there accidentally, as I intended to go to Outback Steakhouse which had a special ! Michael </span>has been invaluable with scheduling of our Championships,as well as in other ways &#8211; I put my dilemma to him and he came up with a great idea : the Deryck Jodah Trophy ! Yes, though Michael did not get my good looks and brains, he could still come up with an occasional great idea !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Our brother, Deryck (known as Ricky) was killed when, according to reports he was stopped at a traffic light, hit by what may have been a drunk driver from behind, who then left the scene without calling 911. This was in Guyana in 1991 so details were murky &amp; justice not done.Compounding the tragedy, the accident happened on his toddler son&#8217;s birthday. Ricky was the only one of my immediate family who never came to NY. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Like every boy in Guyana back then Deryck learned to walk and play cricket practically at the same time. Michael is the eldest then 2 years younger myself, followed by Ricky 2 years later.Though we were 5 siblings my youngest brother Errol and my sister Jacqueline were a bit younger. The 3 of us played cricket every minute until our Mom (Pauline)called, in any space that we found,interspersed with a fight or two-sort of like the NHL, but with more playing. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>I was the best batsman (I know Deryck would have disagreed with this, and Michael dismisses it as a rumor I started) until Errol got older, learned from us, and indisputably became better.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>As a teenager, Ricky&#8217;s cricket took a back seat when he found that he looked like Shashi Kapoor&#8217;s twin. Shashi Kapoor was a heartthrob who was the Brad Pitt of Bollywood. Resembling Shashi was a force more powerful than Krptonite,and Deryck couldn&#8217;t help but play the field, rather than on the field. Then he met Diane whom he married, and they got a son, Kevin. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Deryck was liked by everyone &#8211; and he was the life of the party with older relatives, as well as with his friends and peers. It was amazing how popular he was with people who met him. Just recently I met one of his friends Jerry Persaud, who reminisced about the fun times they shared, particularly at the Georgetown Cricket Club.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>As a family of Indian background we were unusually athletic, and played every sport even beyond cricket and later Deryck played squash for fitness.  </div>
<div> </div>
<div>We grew up amongst a lot of uncles and in the early 1960s my Dad (Manoo Aaron) and many of his brothers played for Gandhi Youth Organization. My uncles Moses &amp; Frank were the best, and Moses became the most well-known.  </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Living by Bourda Cricket Ground, the Jodah family took in, facilitated,entertained, nurtured and made part of the family most of the top Guyanese batsmen from the 1960′s onwards. The gate, yard and doors of 126 Regent Road (and 125 Regent Rd) saw many of Guyana’s greats pass through:  <strong>Alvin Kallicharran, Shiv Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Sew Shivnarine &amp; Len Baichan</strong> played Test cricket. Kallicharran &amp; Baichan scored 100s on their Test debut.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Many more who slept on our beds or floors, ate with us, and played cricket and dominoes with us. Later my brother Errol (long after our part of the family had moved from 126), and my cousins Ritchie &amp; Moses,played with his good friend <strong>Carl Hooper, Andy Jackman, </strong>a 13 year old Shiv Chanderpaul. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>So as a tribute to my brother Deryck (Ricky) Jodah, and the contribution of the Jodah family to cricket,the American College Cricket North East Championship, sponsored by Coca Cola will be played for the Deryck (Ricky) Jodah Trophy.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Matches start at 8 am,11 am &amp; 2 pm on Sat Oct 6 &amp; 7. The Semis &amp; finals on Sunday Oct 7 will be televised by TV Asia. Teams must be present at least 30 mins before gametime. Late teams only will be penalized overs.</div>
