by Lloyd Jodah

I met Ravin Moorthy in 2008. Later, in early 2010 Ravin played a significant role in Toronto’s York University participating in the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship.

My goal was to stimulate the development of cricket at the University level in cricket – Ravin immediately understood my vision and encouraged York University, which came, saw, and conquered, winning the Chanderpaul Trophy.

Indicative of his cricket foresight, Ravin joined the American College Cricket Advisory Board, and put the webcasts of the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship on the Cricket Canada website.

York U Cricket was catapulted onto the pages of Canada’s top newspaper, Globe & Mail, and into the University media. York U stars such as Khushroo Wadia and Raza Rehman have been selected to play for Canada.

A Canadian Universities tournament was started, and I began more teams at McGill and Queens University. Ravin was particularly pleased when I started the team at McGill, his alma mater. McGill was later was featured on CBC, and Ryerson is now a new strong force.

It is with pleasure therefore we see Ravin Moorthy was elected as the new President of Cricket Canada !

In brief remarks on Monday, Cricket Canada’s new President was grateful for the responsibility given by the board.

“I would like to thank the Board of Directors for showing their confidence in me to lead Cricket Canada through this important period of growth and development. Cricket is cross-cultural, generational, and connects millions of Canadians in communities across the country. Cricket Canada will be calling on all stake holders including Canadian Corporations and the Government of Canada to support the organization through these exciting next steps.”

Ravin is the first Albertan to assume the post of President and has established a solid reputation for consistent success in both program & portfolio managment and organisational governance. He has held multiple executive positions within Cricket Canada, Cricket Alberta, and the Calgary & District Cricket League and is a member of the American College Cricket Advisory Board, during a period of 15 years volunteer service to the sport in Canada.

Ravin Moorthy is a graduate of McGill University.

American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah said, “Congratulations to Ryerson and we hope to see them in Florida. It’s great to see our guys at York University get to the Finals -as 2010 American College Cricket Champions they have set the bar high for Canadian schools.

A superb performance too by Sheridan College – we look forward to seeing them in March.

McGill University has a unique position in sports history in the USA and Canada, having played key roles in the beginnings of football, basketball and hockey.

It has also had a long history of cricket on campus, so I am happy to have worked with Muhammed Tayab Zafar to begin McGill’s modern cricket team, and its gratifying to see it develop.”

We oversaw the formation of clubs at 3 of the premiere Universities in Canada: York , Queens and McGill Universities, and Sheridan College has also a member of American College Cricket. We also obtained the Ramnaresh Trophy for the 2010 Canadian Champion.

The 2010 American College Cricket Champions York University team received never before coverage in the Canadian and York U media, thanks to its inclusion in American College Cricket.

King City’s 4 turf grounds can allow 4 games simultaneously, in a picturesque setting, on fields good enough for International cricket.

York University has won both of its games so far, amassing 170 for 3 in one game, powered by Canadian national player Rustam Bhatti’s 82.

Increasingly, when picking a University many top students are looking for colleges with cricket teams. American College Cricket has made that an option in the past 2 1/2 years, by motivating the organization of formal clubs in schools where none existed before.

The American College Cricket National & Regional Championships give these schools high profiles in key demographics for students’ recruitment. To our knowledge, in 2011 alone at least 4 of our teams’ college Presidents have made students recruiting trips to India - now those schools have a valuable tool in their cricket team.

We looked at Bloomberg Businessweek’s recent rankings of BUSINESS SCHOOLS, at the Undergraduate and MBA levels, and highlighted the top ranked universities which are members of American College Cricket, (the numbers next to the schools’ names represent their Businessweek rank).

Queen’s University, known simply as Queen’s, of Ontario, has joined American College Cricket . Queen’s,one of Canada’s top Universities, was established in 1841 and has about 14,000 full-time Undergrad, and over 3,200 fulltime Grad students.

The Queen’s Cricket Club is excited about playing in the 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship and has begun preparations.

Club President & Team Captain Farooq Syed tells us about cricket at Queen’s:

The Queen’s Cricket Club is a group of cricket enthusiasts studying at the prestigious Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. The group has about 40 playing members mainly consisting of international students from all over the world. However, there seems to be an ever growing interest amongst the locals with more and more local members registering each year to the club.

The cricket season starts as soon as the school year begins in September with weekly cricket matches on the Kingston Cricket field located at the West End of the campus. However, because of the harsh Canadian winter outdoor events cannot be carried out after October and all cricketing activities are shifted indoors in the main gymnasium of the university.

Tape ball cricket dominates for most of the year because of the lack of facilities for students interested in the game but various tournaments and leagues maintain the high interest level in the game throughout the year.

Although most international students head back to their respective countries once the spring semester is over, students staying back usually participate in the Canadian summer cricket tournament representing the Kingston team. There have been several notable spectacular performances by our members in that league.

University cricket tournaments are much publicized all over campus and big games often attract reasonable crowds which makes for an enjoyable atmosphere.

The volume of international students originating from countries where cricket is a popular sport continues to rise at the university which is a positive sign for the club. It has also significantly improved the quality of players as the Club now boasts three players who have regularly played domestic cricket at the under 19-level back in their home country.

The club charges a membership fee annually depending on the number of members each year. At the end of each year elections are held where a new executive body is nominated. Apart from these activities the Queen’s Cricket Club also arranges for the screening of live cricket matches at the University for major ICC events.

If I were to sum up our club in one line, I would say it is a club that throws faculty and background rivalries out of the window and unites us together. It is cricket that is bridging all gaps.
