2010 winner of the Gordon Gee Trophy Purdue, fresh from their win over Indiana University, came into the American College Cricket Midwest Championship with a formidable record as the top cricket club in the Big 10.

In contrast, the new team from University of Buffalo was inexperienced, and happy to particpate in their first tournament. Both Purdue and Buffalo got off to a bad start: the Boilermakers lost to Carnegie Mellon whilst Buffalo were defeated by Cleveland State, Ishaan Bhatt took 3 wickets for 7 runs and Pavan 2 for 12 for the CSU Vikings.

The Carnegie Mellon Cricket club, hurriedly pulled together by Atishe Chordia working with Lloyd Jodah in 2009, was one of the original five teams that showed up in Ft Lauderdale Florida in March 2009, and showed a new path for cricket in America. They were part of some key innovations that spring for cricket in America and Canada.

The American College Cricket Spring Break Championship was the first “season ball” college cricket tournament in the USA, and the first national championship for colleges.

Three games were scheduled per day – another first which later rendered the 47 game 2010 Championship and the 67 game 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship possible.

The New York Times did a huge 2 page story in the Sports Section on the revolutionary 2009 event – the first time the nation’s top paper had covered domestic cricket in modern times.

Autumn and rain had set in and the weather was tough on the cricket players on Saturday, but not even wet 50-something degrees weather would stop the cricket. Two games were reduced to 12 overs and batting was tough all weekend.

Carnegie Mellon then took on Penn State and defeated the Nittany Lions behind a 50 by Mudit. The OSU Buckeyes gave the inexperienced Buffalo team their second loss, as Anupam Vivek took 3 wickets for 8 runs, and Anoop 2 for 3. Nakul made 19.

Penn State then knocked 2010 Big 10 Champion Purdue out of the tournament, but Ohio State’s win over Cleveland State earned Ohio State a place in the Finals against Carnegie Mellon University.

However the bowling of the Buckeyes, particularly last year’s Big 10 MVP Romel Somavat, overwhelmed the CMU guys and routed them for 28 runs. Somavat took 3 wickets to add to his 50 scored in an earlier game to earn the Midwest Championship MVP honors again ! Somavat was also one of 5 American College Cricket players of 2010 and a 2-time All American in cricket.

Ohio State easily chased the runs down to win the Gordon Gee Trophy !

The American College Cricket Midwest Championship for the second time bought exciting collegiate cricket to the Ohio State campus, and Columbus. The OSU Cricket Club, led by its President & Phd candidate Anupam Vivek continued their key role in American College Cricket by being great hosts and organizers.

The new Champion in the Big 10 – Ohio State Buckeyes !

It’s autumn, the leaves are evolving into dazzling hues, the winds blow a bit chilly and in the Heartland of America college cricket teams take the field to battle !

The old custom of cricket sweaters, which originated in the English weather, achieve a new relevance in American College Cricket season – only now it may be hoodies !

It may be in the 50′s some days, but the 50′s the batsman is focused on is his own half century of runs !

Saturday, Oct 1st, gameday, there will be matches in Ohio and Iowa, with many Big 10 colleges competing - with national rankings, and 2 Championships, the Midwest and Great Plains, at stake !

The Buckeyes open their campaign against newcomer University of Buffalo, hoping to keep the Gordon Gee Trophy at Ohio State. Defending Champion Purdue want to win here to regain their top 10 ranking – which they lost after not making it to the nationals.

American College Cricket pioneer school Carnegie Mellon has a tough schedule taking on Purdue and Penn State. The Nittany Lions have some new blood eager to take the Gordon Gee Trophy back to Paterno country – Joe Paterno has been coaching there so long he might actually have been around when Philadelphia had one of the strongest cricket teams in the world (in the 1880′s & 18890′s).

New team Iowa State, will face the Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Gophers. The Gophers have been getting stronger each since beginning in 2010.

The guys from Buffalo, and Iowa State are dark horses, whilst University of Iowa showed flashes of strength at the 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship.

Cleveland State Vikings had their first tournament at the nationals, and have been practising hard since for this regional.

Ohio State University President Gordon Gee (who is also a member of the American College Cricket Advisory Board) is expected to attend the finals on Sunday.

by Phalgun Balasubramaniam (Thunderbird)

Last year the Purdue Boilermakers and the Indiana Hoosiers took their celebrated rivalry to a new sport, cricket, at the first American College Cricket Midwest Championship, unoffically refered to as the “Big 10 Championship”.

This past Saturday, Indiana University and 2010 Midwest champions Purdue University were invited by Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard to open the city’s first cricket field. Mayor Ballard also invited American College Cricket “to bring the Big 10 (Midwest) Championship to Indianapolis” next year.

American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah said,”We will seriously consider Mayor Ballard’s offer to host the Midwest Championship, and will support his efforts to make Indianapolis a cricket destination. Bringing 10 Colleges to Indianapolis to play cricket will provide a tremendous boost for the game and Mayor Ballard’s initiative.

We hope the community supports Mayor Ballard, and he wins a new term so we can assist in the plans for a turf wicket and eventually a stadium.”

The Indianapolis World Sports park in Indianapolis resembles the Woodley cricket field in LA with a blanket of green surrounding the field and assures an action packed game with the quick artificial turf.

The morning started with ribbon cutting by Mayor Ballard, followed by a corporate match between two of the largest employers in the Indianapolis area, Dow AgroSciences and Eli Lilly.

Slowly and steadily there was a good inflow of supporters for both the American College Cricket teams as the match between the College teams was about to start. Purdue Pete made a visit to cheer the Boilermakers and was greeted by all the young cricket fans with great joy.

Nestled in a peaceful site in Indianapolis, the World Sports Park’s cricket field is a treat to the player and spectator. The lush green grass is a sight to see when standing either on the 22 yards or as a fielder waiting to throw yourself at the ball.

Purdue Boilermakers elected to bat after Captain Srikar Bhagavatula won the toss.

The Hoosiers were pumped up and they hit the ground running picking up 3 early Purdue wickets. It was only in the 4th over that some sanity was bought to the Purdue innings after Faraz Arif and Zyre Qazi steadied the ship. The two left handers went all guns blazing with sixes and fours soon and IU were left pondering as to what next to do.

After scoring a six Zyre Qazi was bowled for 32 (off 18 balls) and there was some respite again for the IU players. Faraz Arif, a centurion in last years Midwest Big 10 Championship, smashed 57 in 29 balls,to take Purdue to 164 in 20 overs. The Hoosiers fielders were kept on their toes and showed some good fielding, but the massive hitting left Indiana a huge total to chase.

Indiana began the run chase in style, scoring at a brisk pace. After the initial scare to the Boilermakers, a few wickets stopped the Hoosiers progress. Purdue’s bowlers bowled at good lengths and varying the pace at the right times to not only contain the flow of runs but also pick up wickets at regular intervals.

One of the Indiana batsman put up a stiff fight scoring 50+ but the wickets hurt the run scoring and finally Indiana University were bundled out for 134 with 2 balls to spare. Hrishikesh Jayakumar was the pick of the bowlers for Purdue picking up 3 crucial wickets.

Purdue won the Mayor’s Challenge, and have now taken both games in this annual rivalry, but kudos to the Indiana University cricket team for being a part of such a major event. Purdue defends its Big 10 title this weekend at the 2011 Midwest Championship.

Looking forward to many more cities recognizing the scope for cricket like Mayor Greg Ballard, a highly decorated former Marine, and Indianapolis ,and create opportunities tofurther American College Cricket’s missionof“Bringing back the Original American and Canadian Game – Cricket”.

This year the Midwest Championship has been split, to create the Great Plains Championship and avoid the teams from farther west having to travel too far.
Penn State has taken its place competing against other Big 10 colleges, whilst new team University of Buffalo will make its first American College Cricket appearance.

Once again the guys of Buckeyes cricket, this time headed by Anupam Vivek, are hosting the Midwest Championship, as they did superbly, for American College Cricket’s first regional last year.

Carnegie Mellon & College of Wooster took the field in another installment of their rivalry begun in 2009.Carnegie Mellon scored 135 in their 20 overs.

A good total, but reachable by the Wooster team, but CMU bowled out Wooster for 98 ! Carnegie Mellon University – one of the pioneering American College Cricket teams of 2009, when it was led by Atishe Chordia – won by 37 runs !

Ohio State vs Indiana University
Led by their Captain Romel Somavat, the Buckeyes stormed to a victory against the Indiana University Cricket Club ! First the Hoosiers were bowled out for 97 runs, in 19.5 overs. Then Somavat blasted 55 not out,off just 30 balls. Manan contributed 28* in 32 balls as OSU got the win in just 10.2 overs !

Iowa vs Purdue :
The Hawkeyes won the toss and elected to field .Their decision looked like a good one when they got the Purdue Captain early .However, with Srikar, Faraz Arif handled the bowlers elegantly scoring runs in singles first and opening up later. At the 10 over mark it was 60 for1 wicket. Faraz then took took apart the Iowa bowling attack .

Faraz fell after a well made 67 in the 16th over with Purdue’s score on 112 – caught at long on. With 4 overs to go, Srikar smashed the score to 154 in 20 overs, remaining not out on 55.

Iowa began well scoring 22 off their first three overs, but then Purdue struck back led by their experienced bowlers – Saumyang and Adeel. Getting the Iowa Captain first, they slowly choked out the middle order. Iowa kept fighting and reached a score of 64 after 10 overs, but having lost 5 wickets, the chase was going to be tough. Having sniffed victory, Purdue spinners quickly moved in for the kill getting Iowa all out for 71.

Indiana University vs Purdue :
Faraz Arif Iyoob started from where he left off in the previous match scoring runs at will. Indiana University struck back dismissing Saumyang with a good catch at point. Bharath and Satadru played good supporting roles, but it was one-man show as Faraz took the opposition bowlers to the cleaners reaching 50 in the 7th over. He kept going reaching 116 in 14 overs- with team score on 154 when he took himself out of the game to rest before the big final.

Mihir picked up the mantle from Faraz and scored 54 effortlessly in 27 balls to take the team score to 226 in 20 overs. and a seat in the finals secured. As usual for the Boilermakers there was good bowling from Abhijeet, Abhisek and Adeel restricting Indiana to a score of 91/9 in 20 overs and Purdue steamrolled into the finals of first Midwest College cricket championship.

Michigan State vs Ohio State: Michigan State Cricket Club won the toss and sent OSU into bat. After 5 overs Buckeyes were 37 without loss. The in form Romel Somavat going strong. After 10 overs Ohio State CC was 77 with no wickets lost !
After 15 overs Somavat had hit 7 sixes ! OSU were now 153 for 1 wicket ! They went on to score 204 for 5 in 20 overs. Somavat missed a century when he got out for a smashing 97 (7 sixes,5 fours) !

Having to make 205 runs to win, Michigan State struggled and were 46 for 4 after 10 overs, then all out for 109! Buckeyes through to the Finals, to face Purdue !

FINALS – Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Purdue Boilermakers Having already made it to the finals, Purdue witnessed Ohio decimate Michigan State University in the virtual semi-final to set up a clash with its long time rivals. Purdue started well with Adeel getting the first breakthrough. Then Purdue’s electric fielding resulted in two more quick wickets – Abhijeet scoring a direct hit from mid-off and then taking a well judged catch. With OSU captain Somavat somavat still standing things could have changed – But Prashanth came up with a brilliant diving catch at point to dismiss Somavat and OSU was reeling at 28/5 after 8 overs. A fightback from Rohit and Anupam led the OSU recovery, but four wickets by Abhijeet ensured that OSU were allout for 96 in 20 overs.

Chasing 97, Purdue were dealt a big blow in the very first over with the centurion of previous game Faraz runout on 1. Saumyang was dismissed by Somavat who then took another , leaving the match in balance with Purdue at 43/3 after 9 overs.

A good partnership between Srikar and Mihir took Purdue to 82/3 in 15 overs when Srikar fell. Mihir remained unbeaten and ensured that Purdue won the E. Gordon Gee Trophy and emerged as the champions of the first American College Cricket Midwest Championship.

As OSU President E Gordon Gee said, “It’s great to have Big 10 schools competing in another sport-cricket “..

Romel Somavat OSU was declared the Championship MVP for his batting, bowling and captaincy, receiving the BIG League USA Award.
