Final four for North East Championship !

Harvard Cricket Club, originally founded 1862,restarted 2011, now in American College Cricket North East Championship final 4

Five new college teams put on their American College Cricket uniforms to establish a foundation for cricket in their schools. Passion and love for the game brought them from as far as Massachusetts and upstate NY, as well as nearby NJ.

A total of 10 teams battled on 4 fields in Queens and Brooklyn for the Deryck Jodah Trophy in the American College Cricket North East Championship. The weather was gorgeous despite the forecast of rain and the players made the most of it.

Because of hitches with the CricHQ scoring app we are not able to bring you scorecards now,and other stats, however the app is a great option for scoring (as we found in the March National Championship) & we’ll continue using it in future tournaments.

Harvard won vs Princeton University

York College won vs Cornell University

Boston University won vs LIU-Brooklyn

New Jersey Institute of Technology won vs Cornell

Rutgers won vs NYU-Polytechnic

Boston University won vs Northeastern

Harvard won vs LIU-Brooklyn

York College vs Princeton

NJIT and NYU-Polytechnic finished with a 1-1 record.

National Champions York College, Boston University,Harvard and Rutgers were undefeated and qualifed for the final four to be filmed by TV Asia. The date for the Semis & Finals will be confirmed, but is set for the weekend of Oct 27 & 28.

Harvard Cricket Club’s performance is particularly noteworthy as its one of the colleges that cricket was played at in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It established an official club in 1862 and played until the 1920s. Motivated by American College Cricket Ibrahim Khan restarted the club in 2011, and now its set to play on TV challenging for the Deryck Jodah Trophy !

Boston University is one of the 5 colleges that took part in the first American College Cricket Spring Break Championship (the Nationals) in 2009 whilst Rutgers won the first North East regional in 2010.

2012 National Champions York College also reached the 2010 Nationals Finals,after being started just a month before by Suleman Mohammed and Lloyd Jodah.

6th TV Game : Dreams come thru & New favorite for National Championship ?

For practically every student now playing in American College Cricket the dream of being a cricket star had been put in the back of their minds by the time they left their parents’ homes to attend university.

They resigned themselves to live vicariously through the accomplishments of stars like Tendulkar. As some students said, “there are over 1 Billion people in India, and only 11 can play on a cricket team….so your parents tell you – forget your cricket dreams, get an education.”

In its 3 years American College Cricket has put hundreds of these students on a stage where they can be stars living a dream they didn’t expect to come through, whilst getting that valuable education !

Now after the past 6 weeks some of these students can now say they’ve played competitive cricket on TV ! Starting with Rutgers and NYU-Polytechnic, NJ Institute of Technology, Ryerson University, UMBC, Penn State and York College, the teams blazed a trail for American cricket !

So it was that the 6th game was broadcast Dec 10 on TV Asia. NJIT had knocked out a strong UMBC team with a last ball win, to get to the Finals to face a resurgent York College Cardinals team.

Loaded with talent,York College Cardinals have had their issues operating as a team – if they can, they are likely to be a favorite to win the Chanderpaul Trophy at the 2012 Spring Break Championship.

NJ Institute of Technology, on the other hand, were looking for a chance to show their building strength, leading up to the nationals.

York batted first and a wicket in the first over lifted the NJIT Highlanders, but it brought together 2 of the best batsmen in the New York area, left hander Akeem Dodson and right hander Karan Ganesh !

From 1 for 1 at then end of the first over Dodson and Ganesh cracked 27 runs in the next 3 overs . Dodson went on to make 27 with a four and 2 sixes. Ganesh smashed 4 fours in his 29. Then NJIT’s AJ tore into the middle order, getting 3 wickets in his 4 overs, albeit for 31 runs.

But the York College Captain Abbas Khizar lit up the ground with a fine 38 (1 four,3 sixes) in the middle order, enabling York College to get to 161 in their 20 overs. Mayur Patel took 2 wickets in 4 overs for 28 runs, whilst Vixar Patel took 1 for 25 in his 4.

NJIT openers Ravi and Captain Prem started slowly but built a solid foundation, 54 iin 9 overs before Suleman broke getting Prem went for 22 ( 1 four,1 six ). Ata run rate of 6, NJIT was only a bit behind the 8 runs per over needed to get 162 in 20 overs. Then Ravi went for 29 (2 sixes). The rest of the Hiighlanders batting crumbled like a dry Popeyes’ biscuit, and bad running between the wickets resulted in 4 run outs !

Mohammed Suleman, who is looking forward to joining the NYPD in 2011, had an arresting spell of 4 overs,16 and 3 wickets, effectively handcuffing the batsmen. Karan Ganesh was a mystery to the batsmen, taking 2 wickets in his 4 overs for 13 runs. Bilal Shahid bowled a tight spell of 4 overs for 11 runs. Hugo D’Oliveira was the only York College bowler to suffer being hit for 29 runs in 3 overs, but he took the important wicket of Ravi.

So York College emerged as the American College Cricket Mid Atlantic Champion in emphatic fashion.The team looked resplendent in their cardinal red uniforms, with “American College Cricket” across the front – thanks to the work of their new Captain Abbas Khizar, and Ravi of CricketzoneUSA.com

Most importantly, this was the 6th game televised by American College Cricket and TV Asia – effectively lifting cricket in America up much higher than it had been. Cricket in America, and Canada had never before been on television !

The slow motion replays, split screens, graphics gave the telecast a professional look that got better with each game – and its exciting to look forward to how good it will be for the next matches !

Commentary was ably done by Andre Kirton, Aoun Jafarey (Indiana U), Rishabh Natarajan (NYU-Poly), Hammad Rana (Indiana U) and Lloyd Jodah.

TV Asia has committed to televising at least 21 matches next year, including from the American College Cricket Spring Break Championship in March 2012, for which Registration is now going on.

UMBC vs NJIT & Penn State vs York College on TV Asia !

The 5 American College Cricket games broadcast so far in USA & Canada have been historic and groundbreaking – with 1 more to come for this Fall season – this Saturday at 7pm., York College vs NJIT.

No one else has so far even come close to televising domestic cricket in the USA and Canada.

With each broadcast the games on TV Asia look better and better – the camera people, though new to cricket, capture the action better. The added slow motion replays now bring the matches closer to the top level. The graphics and scores are more detailed with each game.

The commentary has been good, with Andre Kirton, Aoun Jaffarey (Indian U), Risabh Natarajan (NYU-Poly) and Hammad Rana (Indian U) joining myself, Lloyd Jodah for the York College vs Penn State match.

UMBC vs NJIT : This game went down to the very last ball !

For NJIT Ravi and Captain Prem Bhagavati got the team off to a great start, putting on 54 in 6 overs. Then Taha alli got the breakthrough for UMBC, taking the wickets of both openers in his first over.

A partnership of 34 steadied the NJIT Highlanders somewhat, but NJIT never really capitalised on their great start. Three wickets fell at 101 and NJIT were all out for 107.

Taha Ali took 3 wickets for 18 runs in 4 overs, Raghav Bharadwaj 2 wickets for 14 in 3, whilst Sumeet Chordiya chipped in with 1 wicket for 24 in his 4 overs. There were 3 run outs.

UMBC struggled batting, and at the end of the powerplay (after 5 overs) UMBC was 23 for 3 compared to NJIT’s 48 for 0 at the same point.

Raghav Bharadwaj took it to the NJIT bowlers though, and struck 32 before he was 4th out with UMBC on 35 !

Somehow UMBC got closer and closer to the NJIT total, and going into the final over 11 runs were needed ! A four meant 7 runs in 5 balls, and finally 2 runs to win on the last ball, or 1 to tie !

The New Jersey boys got the wicket on the final ball to snatch victory from the boys from Maryland !

PENN STATE vs YORK COLLEGE :

The Penn State Nitany Lions batted first against the York College Cardinals and struggled. Varun Kullkarni however played a superb innings of 32, which included 2 magnificent cuts off Hugo D’Oliveira for sixes, as well as more exquisite strokes before getting run out.

Penn State made 84. Karan Ganesh bowled a great spell of 3 overs for 3 runs, taking 3 wickets. Hugo D’Oliveira, Suleman Mohammed & Bilal Shahid each chipped in with a wicket each, whilst opening bowler Yasneen Khan bowled a good spell, and took 2 very good catches in the deep.

Jasim Ahmed had 2 run outs.

It was going to be tough for Penn State to defend 84 as a total, Rishab Bahel gave it his all, striking 4 times, including taking 3 wickets in his 2nd over. Rishabh finished with 4 overs, 15 runs and 4 wickets.

However in the 2nd over of the match Raghav Agarwal gave the game away, bowling 6 ful ltosses to Akeem Dodson who dispatched then all o the boundary for 4s and sixes ! 40 runs were scored off the over, which included a noball and wide !

Dodson was out for 32, made in 8 balls (3 sixes & 3 fours) ! Karan Ganesh, 22* in 9 balls ( 2 fours & 1 six) and Hugo D’Oliveira 14* (1 four & 1 six) wrapped up the victory for York College !

Next year TV Asia will televise at least 18 American College Cricket matches in their entirety, plus highlights from others, and reports on American College Cricket.

6 games will be televised from the American College Cricket Spring Break Championship, March 13 to 18.

4th Game on TV : UMBC vs NJIT this Sat ! Don’t miss this thriller !

The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Cricket club has been one of the top teams in the Washington/Maryland area for years. They won the Washington Metropolitan Cricket Board (WMCB) league’s T20 tournament 3 years in a row, before changing leagues and joining the Washington Cricket League (WCL).

In the WCL this year, UMBC made the Playoffs in both the 40 over and T20 competitions only losing in the Quarter finals to the eventual winners of both competitions.

The competition has been tougher in American College Cricket however, and UMBC has not found that kind of success in its 3 tournaments so far – the team wants to change that badly.

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Highlanders Cricket club got started for the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship, and have steadily improved, making the semis of the Northeast Championship.

Teams are allowed to play in multiple regionals in this early stage of American College Cricket, if they are logistically able to, in order to increase the amount of cricket they play- this gave NJIT another opportunity to go for a title.

The 4th in a historic season of cricket on TV by American College Cricket – the game was played, and recorded for TV – to be shown at 7 pm on TV Asia on Saturday November 19. What a game it was, coming down to the very last ball !

American College Cricket is providing cricket fans with new teams to learn about, and support – instead of the same 9 over and over again ! World cricket needs an infusion of new blood to get fans excited !

So watch UMBC Highlanders, captained by Gurnish Singh, vs NJIT Retreivers captained Prem Bhagavati, on TV Asia this Saturday at 7 pm ! TV Asia is available on all major cable systems and Dish Network.

2nd TV Game : Modi & Vixar sparkle but Harsh & Numan get it done !

Sat Nov 5: The 2nd game of the American College Cricket season on TV Asia pitted the New Jersey Insititute of Technology (NJIT) against Ryerson University.

Sure millions were getting hyped over the LSU vs Alabama game, the top 2 ranked teams in college football, but for some of us it was Gametime for college cricket !

Ryerson University had beaten other Canadian colleges, including York University (2010 American College Cricket champions) to make it to the Northeast Championship, whilst NJIT had gone undefeated in the NE Championship to make it to the Semis.

NJIT batted first and got off to a bad start at 12 for 2, but then Vixar Patel held one end whilst opener Chintan Modi attacked the Ryerson pacers, Canadian Under 19 6′ 4′ Rayan Pathan and Sufian Chaudhary. Modi smashed 3 fours and 2 sixes in making 32 in just 14 balls and elevated NJIT’s scoring rate to nearly 10 runs per over.

Modi and Vixar put on 31 runs, Vixar making 6 before Pathan got his revenge getting Vixar caught by 6’5 Warren Aaron Rajroop. NJIT captain Prem Bhagavati joined Modi and at the end of the power play, NJIT was 48 for 3.

Pathan took a magnificent diving one handed catch to dismiss Prem off Harsh Desai, who also took the wicket of the rampaging Modi. A superb bouncer got rid of Dharit, who popped up a catch to wicketkeeper Aslam.

At the half way point NJIT was 69 for 6 (9 overs). Bhagavati made 15 in 16 balls.A late flurry of 3 fours by Parth Shah in his 19 in 17 balls took NJ Institute of Technology to 116 all out in their 18 overs.

Harsh Desai took 3 wickets for 18 runs in his 4 overs, wrecking the NJIT middle order.

Ryerson started slowly and safely, with openers Farhan Khan,14 and Hassan Zaidi, 12 putting on 24 before Khan was out. At the end of 5, Ryerson was 24 for 1 compared to NJIT’s 48 for 3.

Ryerson’s captain Hasan Mirza came at 3 and watched wicketkeeper Modi brilliantly stump Zaidi for 12, and in the 7th over Ryerson was 37 for 2 – with the NJIT team hyped, and in the game !

24 year old Numan Aslam has a reputation for hitting sixes, and immediately showed his aggressive style. With a stance similar to Shiv Chanderpaul, Numan, with lovely flicks,pulls and hooks made 41 of the 57 run partnership he shared with Hasan Mirza, playing a solid captain’s knock of 16 in 22 balls.

By the time Mirza was out Ryerson was safely within sight of victory. 6’2 all rounder Sufian Chaudhary wrapped the win up with an exquisite square drive and flick, hitting 3 fours in making 20 in 10 balls. Numan finished with 43*, in 30 balls smashing 5 fours and 2 sixes as Ryerson won easily in the 17 th over.

Words like historic and momentous are often overused but truly, TV Asia’s broadcast of American College Cricket was taking the world game to an entirely new level,bringing new teams for the cricket audience to get excited over, and new opportunities for players !

With over 1,000 players now actively competing in American College Cricket in colleges across the USA and Canada,and a developing alumni base of support,plus the increasing financial support of the schools – cricket can now concretely be said to have a chance to reclaim a place in the American and Canadian sports scene.

None of this happens accidently, its by the hard everyday work of American College Cricket in motivating student leaders to see the vision, and the execution of that vision. As American College Cricket founder Lloyd Jodah says, “Tournaments are just a small visible part of what we do – I’m not interested in players or teams that just show up to play. We work on developing enduring structures and an increased profile for the game.”

: Ryerson’s Numan Islam cuts

This Saturday at 7 pm on TV Asia, Ryerson University takes on the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in NYC to see which team gets to the finals of the American College Cricket Northeast Cahmpionship.

The team from Ryerson University made the 9 hour drive from Toronto to New York City because they wanted to be a part of American College Cricket- playing in the American College Cricket Northeast Championship meant being a part of one of the best things to happen for cricket in over 100 years.

Then the team found out that the Semis and Finals would be televised ! The players could only have dreamed of such an opportunity before – now it was going to be a reality !

Ryerson University, led by Hasan Abbas had just defeated 2010 Chanderpaul Trophy winner York University to win the Canadian Championship, and came to NYC with a fearsome reputation.

The team from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, led by Prem Bhagavati, had only come together for the American College Cricket Spring Break Championship in March, where they did not do well.

With practice since then however, they elevated their performance and went undefeated in the Northeast Championship to reach the final four.

This is the 2nd game of the college cricket season which TV Asia is televising ball by ball – watch, hold parties to watch, and promote it in your schools and everywhere possible.

Matches are scheduled for Nov 5, Nov 12, Nov 19, Nov 26 & Dec 3. More games may be televised.

On 5 fields in Queens and Brooklyn NYC on a beautiful day for cricket, after pool play two highly favored teams, University of Pennsylvania and York College did not make it to the final four.

Defending 2010 Northeast Champion Rutgers looked like a cohesive unit as they went undefeated, whilst Canadian Champion Ryerson, having beat York University (by 1 run) came in with a formidable reputation.

The NJ Institute of Technology team practised hard for this tournament, and they got the results, whilst NYU-Poly looked good. However now, in the final four draw NYU-Poly goes up against a team they have not beaten before,Rutgers, NJIT takes on Ryerson.

All 3 games will be televised on TV Asia. Play starts at 9 am Spring Creek Cricket Field, commmonly called Gateway, near the Gateway Shopping Center.. All 3 games will be televised on TV Asia.

University of Pennsylvania defeated Boston University.

York College defeated UPenn.

Queen’s College batted first and scored 135/7 and Rutgers scored 139/4 in 17.1 overs to win.

Boston University batted first and scored 121/9 and Rutgers smashed 122/1 in 11.2 overs. Queens College scored 97 in 18 overs, which Canadian champions Ryerson chased down in the 14th over.
Ryerson chased it down in 14th over.

NJIT. batted first scored 179/6 in 20 Overs. York College. 134/9 in 17.3 Overs.
