The colors of autumn have never been seen on a cricket telecast like they were in this Semi Final of the American College Cricket Mid Atlantic Championship sponsored by Coca Cola on TV Asia.

The smorgasbord of hues of yellows,orange & brown needed a Neville Cardus to do them justice – a Monet painting never looked better as the TV Asia cameras captured the Montgomery College and LIU Brooklyn battle to see who would face UMBC for the title.

Montgomery College batted first at the British Officers Cricket Club and lost an early wicket before alum Sadiq Naseer,14 and Syed,32 steadied the ship taking the score to 43 for 2. The USA’s first modern cricket star, Adil Bhatti, then strode to the wicket and with his usual confident approach took control.

Bhatti and longtime cricket mate Suchit Laheri put on an unbroken 89 run partnership as Bhatti delighted with strokes that matched the resplendent surroundings. All the slow outfield could do was prevent Bhatti from getting a century as he unveiled his panoploy of shots, hitting 4 fours and 6 mammoth sixes in 80* in 42 balls. Laheri lofted 2 sixes at the end to finish on 29*. The 2 players played in the first Montgomery matches back in March 2009 and so this partnership had special meaning.

The Montgomery Raptors innings ended at 175 for 3 and the newly put together team of the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds faced a real challenge.

An astonishing spell by Suchit Laheri of 3 wickets for 5 runs in 3 overs, and a wicket at the other end by Adil Bahtti made the Blackbirds 19 for 4 when Mayo got LIU Brooklyn’s Captain Devarshetty and it was 20 for 5. Swaroop, 19 Aditya 16 Husui 15* and Patha,11 wagged the tail to take the total to 90 for in LIU’s 20 overs and Montgomery won by 83 runs to get through to the Finals !

He’s become America’s first cricket star since John Bart King 100 years ago – stepping onto the stage by leading Montgomery College to the first national Championship in March 2009.

Since then Bhatti has made it into the New York Times, the Front page of the Sunday Washington Post,International Herald Tribune, Voice of America News, Sun Sentinel and his college and local media, and lots of Indian & Pakistani media after leading his team to the first national Championship.

Adil’s leadership,batting & bowling have played major roles in Montgomery College’s climb to become America’s most well-known cricket team. He has 7 fifties in American College Cricket, including 60* against the University of the West Indies in 2010.

Bhatti has played on American College Cricket’s pioneering webstreams, now he plays on TV for the first time !

This Saturday at 7 pm on TV Asia Bhatti and 2009 Vice Captain Sadiq Naseer return to the Montgomery College team,filled with new players as they take on Long Island University-Brooklyn Blackbirds in the 2nd Semi Finals of the Mid Atlantic Championship.

LIU-Brooklyn is led by Sandeep Devarshetty who himself has garnered a tremendous amount of publicity in a short time : Sandeep has been on a float with Anil Kumble at the India Day Parade, met NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly,and featured in articles in the New York Times and his college media !

Harvard Cricket Club, originally founded 1862,restarted 2011, now in American College Cricket North East Championship final 4

Five new college teams put on their American College Cricket uniforms to establish a foundation for cricket in their schools. Passion and love for the game brought them from as far as Massachusetts and upstate NY, as well as nearby NJ.

A total of 10 teams battled on 4 fields in Queens and Brooklyn for the Deryck Jodah Trophy in the American College Cricket North East Championship. The weather was gorgeous despite the forecast of rain and the players made the most of it.

Because of hitches with the CricHQ scoring app we are not able to bring you scorecards now,and other stats, however the app is a great option for scoring (as we found in the March National Championship) & we’ll continue using it in future tournaments.

Harvard won vs Princeton University

York College won vs Cornell University

Boston University won vs LIU-Brooklyn

New Jersey Institute of Technology won vs Cornell

Rutgers won vs NYU-Polytechnic

Boston University won vs Northeastern

Harvard won vs LIU-Brooklyn

York College vs Princeton

NJIT and NYU-Polytechnic finished with a 1-1 record.

National Champions York College, Boston University,Harvard and Rutgers were undefeated and qualifed for the final four to be filmed by TV Asia. The date for the Semis & Finals will be confirmed, but is set for the weekend of Oct 27 & 28.

Harvard Cricket Club’s performance is particularly noteworthy as its one of the colleges that cricket was played at in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It established an official club in 1862 and played until the 1920s. Motivated by American College Cricket Ibrahim Khan restarted the club in 2011, and now its set to play on TV challenging for the Deryck Jodah Trophy !

Boston University is one of the 5 colleges that took part in the first American College Cricket Spring Break Championship (the Nationals) in 2009 whilst Rutgers won the first North East regional in 2010.

2012 National Champions York College also reached the 2010 Nationals Finals,after being started just a month before by Suleman Mohammed and Lloyd Jodah.

In the USA, inexplicably people of cricket background have mostly left cricket out of their social & cultural activities

TV Asia float promoting American College Cricket

but TV Asia & American College Cricket is changing that. For the 2nd year TV Asia heavily promoted American College Cricket on their float in the 33rd Annual India Day Parade Sunday, as Madison Ave NYC rocked to the sounds of Indian music !

Chief Guest of the India Day Parade this year was legendary Indian bowler Anil Kumble, and American College Cricket players were ecstatic to meet the Indian cricket great, on the Espn float promoting the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup.

Thousands lined Madison Ave, NYC to watch Anil Kumble and Parade Grand Marshall Saif Ali Khan, son of the late Nawab of Pataudi who captained India in the 1960′s.

American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah met Kumble and rode on both the Espn & TV Asia float with some American College Cricket players. LIU-Brooklyn Club President Sandeep Devarshetty and some American College Cricketers rode with their idol Kumble and the ICC T20 World Cup Trophy - certainly one of the highlights of their lives.

Reading the “American College Cricket” written on the shirt Kumble asked the students about it, and was happily surprised to find out that cricket was being played in American & Canadian Universities. The students then donned Espn shirts to ride with Kumble.

The event celebrating India’s Independence was televised by TV Asia -the voice & mirror of the South Asian Community in the USA.

Last Wednesday,Sandeep Devarshetty,Captain of the new American College Cricket club at LIU-Brooklyn, got the pleasure of meeting NYPD Police Commssioner Ray Kelly, at Police Headquarter, One Police Plaza !

No, Sandeep was not the Dark Knight, the new Batman of Gotham City – though he is a batsman ! He was attending a function with American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah, and NYU-Polytechnic University’s Az Cheema.

So it’s fair to say its been a hectic time for Sandeep ! Joining American College Cricket has thrust him into a bit of limelight he had not expected ! First there was the announcement on AmericanCollegeCricket.com followed by the article in local media, DNAinfo.com

Wednesday Sandeep & Lloyd discussed plans for the LIU Blackbirds cricket club, and possibly a “practice” game against another college soon.Sandeep alo met Sgt Rana, who heads the NYPD United Cricket League for youth ages 15-19.

Also present were lots of Police Officers, religious & community leaders with members of the NYPD United Cricket & Soccer teams.

Lloyd Jodah & American College Cricket has been a supporter of the NYPD United Cricket League from its inception, & Jodah was instrumental in the start of the NYPD Police Officers Cricket team which now plays in the Commonwealth League.

Long Island U-Brooklyn joins American College Cricket ! Becomes 3rd NYC team!

Cricket is now one of the sports being played on the Athletic Field of Long Island University-Brooklyn !

The LIU-Brooklyn Cricket Club was formed recently by a group of pharmacy students. Most had played for college teams back in India and were excited about the opportunity to play here. Initially they practiced wherever they could, sometimes on the Athletic Field, sometimes at nearby Ft Greene Park.

Under the leadership of Sandeep Devarshetty the club became a part of American College Cricket, eager to compete against other colleges. Though many interested students are away for the Summer Break, Sandeep has already had a group practicing,and the Athletic Field has been secured for 4 hour practice sessions twice a week.

The club also got new equipment, and have ordered shirts.

Sandeep has organized practices so LIU-Brooklyn can be ready for the American College Cricket Northeast Championship in September, where they will be competing against experienced teams like Boston University, 2010 Northeast Champion Rutgers University, 2011 National semi-finalist University of Pennsylvania, 2011 Northeast Champion Ryerson University and 2012 National Champion York College.

LIU-Brooklyn is now the 2nd Brooklyn college, with NYU-Polytechnic that has a cricket team.

Though staff do not play on the colleges’ teams,they may practice and Club Advisor Patrick Campbell added, “Students have been joined by a number of their professors as well. Dr. Cecil Joseph, assistant professor of biochemistry, played cricket growing up in Grenada. Professor of Pharmaceutics Dr. Almas Babar graduated from the University of Punjab, Pakistan, and has the scars to prove his cricket experience.

Dr. Rutesh Dave, assistant professor of pharmaceutics and Dr. Bupendra Shah, Associate Professor of Social and Administrative Sciences, both played cricket during their college days in India and have joined their graduate students on the pitch for practice this summer.“

Most of the club members at the moment are from the Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences studying pharmaceutics and industrial pharmacy. One of the oldest Pharmacy schools in the country,it was established as Brooklyn College of Pharmacy in 1886, and became affiliated with LIU in 1929 then merged with the Brooklyn campus in 1929.

According to Advisor Campbell, “ In September, we would like to play some intramural matches against the PharmD students and will open the club to the rest of the campus students.”

LIU Brooklyn was established in 1926 (a 2nd campus, LIU-Post was established in 1954) . The campus includes the former Brooklyn Paramount Theater, the first theather in the world built for “talking pictures”, later the site of Allan Freed’s rock ‘n roll shows in the early days of rock n roll.

For decades the Theater hosted LIU Basketball (the Blackbirds). Notably with basketball’s global expansion is the fact that the first non-American to play in an NBA Finals was Hank Beenders,a LIU Alum.

The prestigious George Polk Awards are presented annually by Long Island University, and were established in 1848.
