Ohio State Buckeyes Cricket new Champ in the Big 10, win Gordon Gee Trophy !

2010 winner of the Gordon Gee Trophy Purdue, fresh from their win over Indiana University, came into the American College Cricket Midwest Championship with a formidable record as the top cricket club in the Big 10.

In contrast, the new team from University of Buffalo was inexperienced, and happy to particpate in their first tournament. Both Purdue and Buffalo got off to a bad start: the Boilermakers lost to Carnegie Mellon whilst Buffalo were defeated by Cleveland State, Ishaan Bhatt took 3 wickets for 7 runs and Pavan 2 for 12 for the CSU Vikings.

The Carnegie Mellon Cricket club, hurriedly pulled together by Atishe Chordia working with Lloyd Jodah in 2009, was one of the original five teams that showed up in Ft Lauderdale Florida in March 2009, and showed a new path for cricket in America. They were part of some key innovations that spring for cricket in America and Canada.

The American College Cricket Spring Break Championship was the first “season ball” college cricket tournament in the USA, and the first national championship for colleges.

Three games were scheduled per day – another first which later rendered the 47 game 2010 Championship and the 67 game 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship possible.

The New York Times did a huge 2 page story in the Sports Section on the revolutionary 2009 event – the first time the nation’s top paper had covered domestic cricket in modern times.

Autumn and rain had set in and the weather was tough on the cricket players on Saturday, but not even wet 50-something degrees weather would stop the cricket. Two games were reduced to 12 overs and batting was tough all weekend.

Carnegie Mellon then took on Penn State and defeated the Nittany Lions behind a 50 by Mudit. The OSU Buckeyes gave the inexperienced Buffalo team their second loss, as Anupam Vivek took 3 wickets for 8 runs,and Anoop 2 for 3. Nakul made 19.

Penn State then knocked 2010 Big 10 Champion Purdue out of the tournament, but Ohio State’s win over Cleveland State earned Ohio State a place in the Finals against Carnegie Mellon University.

However the bowling of the Buckeyes, particularly last year’s Big 10 MVP Romel Somavat, overwhelmed the CMU guys and routed them for 28 runs. Somavat took 3 wickets to add to his 50 scored in an earlier game to earn the Midwest Championship MVP honors again ! Somavat was also one of 5 American College Cricket players of 2010 and a 2-time All American in cricket.

Ohio State easily chased the runs down to win the Gordon Gee Trophy !

The American College Cricket Midwest Championship for the second time bought exciting collegiate cricket to the Ohio State campus, and Columbus. The OSU Cricket Club, led by its President & Phd candidate Anupam Vivek continued their key role in American College Cricket by being great hosts and organizers.

Last year the Purdue Boilermakers and the Indiana Hoosiers took their celebrated rivalry to a new sport, cricket, at the first American College Cricket Midwest Championship, unoffically refered to as the “Big 10 Championship”.

This past Saturday, Indiana University and 2010 Midwest champions Purdue University were invited by Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard to open the city’s first cricket field. Mayor Ballard also invited American College Cricket “to bring the Big 10 (Midwest) Championship to Indianapolis” next year.

American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah said,”We will seriously consider Mayor Ballard’s offer to host the Midwest Championship, and will support his efforts to make Indianapolis a cricket destination. Bringing 10 Colleges to Indianapolis to play cricket will provide a tremendous boost for the game and Mayor Ballard’s initiative.

We hope the community supports Mayor Ballard, and he wins a new term so we can assist in the plans for a turf wicket and eventually a stadium.”

The Indianapolis World Sports park in Indianapolis resembles the Woodley cricket field in LA with a blanket of green surrounding the field and assures an action packed game with the quick artificial turf.

The morning started with ribbon cutting by Mayor Ballard, followed by a corporate match between two of the largest employers in the Indianapolis area, Dow AgroSciences and Eli Lilly.

Slowly and steadily there was a good inflow of supporters for both the American College Cricket teams as the match between the College teams was about to start. Purdue Pete made a visit to cheer the Boilermakers and was greeted by all the young cricket fans with great joy.

Nestled in a peaceful site in Indianapolis, the World Sports Park’s cricket field is a treat to the player and spectator. The lush green grass is a sight to see when standing either on the 22 yards or as a fielder waiting to throw yourself at the ball.

Purdue Boilermakers elected to bat after Captain Srikar Bhagavatula won the toss.

The Hoosiers were pumped up and they hit the ground running picking up 3 early Purdue wickets. It was only in the 4^th over that some sanity was bought to the Purdue innings after Faraz Arif and Zyre Qazi steadied the ship. The two left handers went all guns blazing with sixes and fours soon and IU were left pondering as to what next to do.

After scoring a six Zyre Qazi was bowled for 32 (off 18 balls) and there was some respite again for the IU players. Faraz Arif, a centurion in last years Midwest Big 10 Championship, smashed 57 in 29 balls,to take Purdue to 164 in 20 overs. The Hoosiers fielders were kept on their toes and showed some good fielding, but the massive hitting left Indiana a huge total to chase.

Indiana began the run chase in style, scoring at a brisk pace. After the initial scare to the Boilermakers, a few wickets stopped the Hoosiers progress. Purdue’s bowlers bowled at good lengths and varying the pace at the right times to not only contain the flow of runs but also pick up wickets at regular intervals.

One of the Indiana batsman put up a stiff fight scoring 50+ but the wickets hurt the run scoring and finally Indiana University were bundled out for 134 with 2 balls to spare. Hrishikesh Jayakumar was the pick of the bowlers for Purdue picking up 3 crucial wickets.

Purdue won the Mayor’s Challenge, and have now taken both games in this annual rivalry, but kudos to the Indiana University cricket team for being a part of such a major event. Purdue defends its Big 10 title this weekend at the 2011 Midwest Championship.

: Purdue’s 2010 Midwest Champion team

Just last year American College Cricket started a “hard ball” cricket club at Indiana University, and the guys led by then IU Cricket Club President Aoun Jafarey hurriedly prepared for their first hardball game together, in the 2010 American College Cricket Midwest Championship.

Now Indiana University Cricket, together with the 2010 Midwest Champions Purdue University, have been asked to open the first cricket field built by the city of Indianapolis, by Mayor Greg Ballard.

The Opening Ceremony and game will be on September 24th, 2011 and will be attended by the Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard. American College Cricket founder and President Lloyd Jodah has been invited.

Indianapolis is the home of the Indianapolis Colts,Indianapolis 500, Indiana Pacers (NBA), as well as the NCAA , and hosted the 2010 NCAA Final Four.

The 46th Superbowl will be in Indianapolis in 2012.

As a result of the field opening, the American College Cricket Midwest Championship, played for the Gordon Gee Trophy, is rescheduled to the following weekend, Oct 1 & 2.

Mayor Greg Ballard spent 23 years in the US Marine Corps and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Increasingly, when picking a University many top students are looking for colleges with cricket teams. American College Cricket has made that an option in the past 2 1/2 years, by motivating the organization of formal clubs in schools where none existed before.

The American College Cricket National & Regional Championships give these schools high profiles in key demographics for students’ recruitment. Purdue University steamrolls into Finals ! Puts up record score !

Purdue, basketball powerhouse, is showing its mettle in cricket ! The Boilermakers put up the huge score of 226 for the loss of only 4 wickets !

They then smoked out the Indiana University batsmen who managed 91 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs, earning Purdue the victory with Bonus points !

There is currently an exciting battle for the 2nd Finals spot between Ohio State, Michigan State, Carnegie Mellon and the U of Iowa !

The Indiana University Cricket Club has joined American College Cricket ! – What next ? Will they be playing Purdue for the “Olde Oaken Stumps ?

Indiana University was founded in 1820 and now has a total student population on 8 campuses (Spring 2010): 98,999 -IU Bloomington has over 40,000. IU’s annual budget is $2.7 Billion. Its a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and was ranked # 52 in the US by the Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2009.

The IU Libraries were named the top American research library system in 2009 by the Association of College and Research Libraries. Of the 25 copies of the “First Printing of the Declaration of Independence” printed on July 4, 1776 one copy is displayed, as is George Washington’s letter accepting the presidency of the United States. Now if only it had the cricket bat George Washington played with at Valley Forge !

The Cricket Club’s Aoun Jafarey attends Kelley Business School which is ranked as one of the top in the US.

In 1998 IU became the first American university to make Microsoft’s software available on campus, and in 2004 Intel named IU Bloomington the No. 1 wireless college campus. IU Professor Rolla N. Harger invented the Drunk-O-Meter in 1931 and Alfred C. Kinsey and his co-researchers published Sexual Behavior in the Human Male in 1948.

Michael Uslan, producer of 1989′s Batman, as well as subsequent Batman movies, taught a course in comic book history whilst a law student at IU in 1974. In 1996 the John Mellencamp Pavillion opened, named for the rock star noted for hits like Little Pink Houses, Jack and Diane and the Chevy Silverado truck commercial heard on every NFL game last season it seemed.

HOOSIERS SPORTS

The IU athletics endowment is $32 million.

Since 1909 “Gala Day” has coincided with the IU vs Purdue football game, and in1925 the “Old Oaken Bucket ” was played for by the 2 rival schools for the first time. The rivalry was taken to new heights from the 2001–02 , when IU and Purdue began competing for an all-sports trophy called the Crimson & Gold Cup. The football team lost to USC in the Rose Bowl in 1967 but won Bowl games in 1979 and 1991.

The Hoosiers have won 6 men’s swimming & diving titles, 7 men’s soccer titles and are renowned for their basketball team which has won 5 national championships, including in 1981 led by later NBA great Isiah Thomas, coached by Bobby Knight. ”IU teams have won or shared 157 Big 10 Conference championships” according to IU’s website. IU is also strong in many non-varsity “Club” sports such as ice hockey and rugby- hopefully cricket will take its place on that list.

1951 IU held the first Little 500 bicycle race.The Little 500 is the largest US collegiate bike race and was even attended by Lance Armstrong.It raises funds for scholarships.

President of the Indiana University Cricket Club Prolay Mondal talked about Hoosiers cricket :

“The Hoosier Cup 2010 is a heavy tennis ball tournament. This is the first time we are hosting it and we are hopeful that we’ll be able to start organizing season ball tournaments in near future. We have eight teams participating this year; two of them are from Bloomington and the rest is from outside.

IU cricket club participated both in 2009 and 2010 Indy Friends Club hard tennis ball tournaments and were 1st runners up both the times. We don’t have a hardball team but some our players play in the Midwest Cricket League.”

IU’s Aoun Jafarey added:

“Once every semester we hold a workshop to spread the word about cricket amongst the local American population at Indiana University.”

Captain Ashish Karia said:

“We’re looking forward to taking on the other Big 10 schools at the American College Cricket Midwest Regionals, and the national championship at the 2011 American College Cricket Championship at Spring Break in Florida.”

TRADITIONS

One of IU’s traditions is that a female student is not officially a co-ed until she has been kissed under the dome of the Rose Well House at midnight. Since 1991 the IU Dance Marathon, where hundreds of IU students dance for 36 hours, has raised over $ 7 million for Riley Hospital for Children – maybe there will be some Bhangra or a Jai Ho breakout next time.
