<p>Well, thanks to the work of Boston University Cricket Club President Hayat Khan students at BU can now get credit for learning &amp; playing cricket !</p>
<p>Some months ago Hayat began the process of motivating the relevant college administrators to start such a class. He discussed the idea with American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah, who gave Hayat a syllabus,&amp; some suggestions. Nadir Budhwani, Phd had pioneered such a course  in 2005 at the University of Minnesota, which was continued by Charles Peterson.</p>
<p>In between doing his college work &amp; exams, playing in the American College Cricket Regionals ( BU&#8217;s first match on TV), &amp; getting the team ready for the Nationals, Hayat made a film &amp; did the requisite presentations to get the course approved, then called Lloyd with the great news !</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s Hayat&#8217;s description of the class:</p>
<p><em>The class is called PDP GS 150 (GS for general sports). It&#8217;s a 1 credit class and it meets in the FitRec which is the Fitness and Recreation Center (the gym). It will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 am to 11 am. BU student Hayat Khan will be the instructor for the class.</em></p>
<p><em>Beginning-level course on the history and rules of cricket. Basic skills will be explored with an emphasis on mastering batting, bowling and fielding techniques. By the end of class, students should be familiar with the fundamentals of cricket and be able to participate in practice games. Equipment will be provided.</em></p>
<div id="attachment_11223" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 310px"><a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/1CW14.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-11223" title="1CW14" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/1CW14-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Hayat at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011, teaching a boy how to hold a bat.</p></div>
<p>This class comes soon after BU put an exciting moving cricket graphic as their banner on the University Homepage !</p>
<p>A true American cricketer, Hayat Khan is the BU Cricket Club President &amp; Captain, &amp; has played in a number of American College Cricket National &amp; Regional Championships. As a high school student he played in the PSAL and the NYPD youth cricket leagues, &amp; one of the reasons he selected Boston University for college, was because he read about BU&#8217;s American College Cricket team.</p>
<p>The Boston University CC under then President Sumantro Das, &amp; Captain Shilpin Makwana is one of the 5 pioneering pillars of American College Cricket that played the first Championship in 2009 and has played every tournament since. It was given the honor of being the first college team (vs Rutgers) to play at the CBRP Cricket Stadium (in 2010).</p>

<dd class="wp-caption-dd">Lloyd &amp; Colin Michael Jodah (died Jan 18, RIP), Shiv Chanderpaul &amp; Sher Tereen (Harvard) at Press Conference to launch the Hall of Fame</dd>
</dl>
<div>Playing in a National Championship is an accomplishment, and college sports clubs get increased recognition by schools for doing so. Therefore every team playing in the 2013 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship is already a winner, and a major step further along in the development of cricket in their college, the USA &amp; Canada.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>This year 7 new college teams did the hard work required to play in their first National Championship and excitement is running high, like a volcano about to erupt.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>University of Memphis, University of Texas-Arlington, West Virginia University, University of South Alabama, Wayne State University, University at Buffalo, Phoenix East Aviation and Harvard University will for the first time share the sun and fun of Ft Lauderdale, South Beach &amp; Miami, and compete on the beautiful cricket fields of Florida.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The players will no doubt marvel at how much better the Florida fields are, than those they get to play on in other parts of the USA. Interestingly the  7 new colleges are from 7 different states !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Sports pioneer Harvard, which started an official cricket team 150 years ago in 1862, and was an important part of the birth of organized sports in America, looks to re-establish itself as a cricket power.<a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Harvard2.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-11163" title="Harvard2" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Harvard2-300x231.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="231" /></a></div>
<div> </div>
<div>Top Newcomer of 2012 Murali Ankaraju, who scored 131 and 82 in the South Central regional will be coming with the Memphis Tigers.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>In just a few months South Alabama has made the Nationals, and UT Arlington was just begun this Feb, when student Umer Musharraf contacted Lloyd Jodah, American College Cricket President and asked how to do so. Lloyd told him what to do, and Umer pulled together experienced players, had meetings, filed paperwork etc and voila, the UTA Mavericks were in as a wild card !</div>
<div> </div>
<div><a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/WAYNE_STATEunif.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-11162" title="WAYNE_STATEunif" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/WAYNE_STATEunif-233x300.jpg" alt="" width="233" height="300" /></a>The clubs have received significant support from their schools, and other supporters including Icore Infotech Inc <a href="http://www.icoreinfotech.com/">http://www.icoreinfotech.com/</a> (West Virginia U),Samosa Hut &amp; Grill, Currytos Restaurant &amp; Dallas Premiere League (UT Arlington), Michigan Cricket Assoc.(Wayne State), Red Bull (U at Buffalo) and Dr Shehzad Topiwala, MD (Phoenix East Aviation).</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Some players will squeeze in school assignments and practically all will have the best Spring Break of their lives. </div>
<div>The National title &amp; the Chanderpaul Trophy is at stake, and to the players the opportunity to possibly play on TV is a dream ! Add to that possibly playing in the ICC-Certified CBRP Cricket Stadium and the rewards for the students&#8217; efforts are extraordinary and priceless !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Just like in March 2012, TV Asia will televise the Semis &amp; Finals (on tape-delay) with a professional 9 cameras production in HD with commentary,slo mo replays,close-ups etc across the USA &amp; Canada. TV Asia will also do features on players &amp; reports from the other matches.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The Championship will be dedicated to Colin Michael Jodah (brother of Lloyd) who was an important part of American College Cricket, behind the scenes. He died Jan 18 at age 56.</div>
<div> </div>

<div>
<div>Chanderpaul made the announcement at the sparkling new Resorts World Casino in Queens,New York City where &#8220;An Evening with Brian Lara &amp; Shiv Chanderpaul&#8221; will be held Saturday December 15. The event is organized by Romeo Hitlall and RH Entertainment. Other West Indian greats Courtney Walsh, Clive Lloyd and Jimmy Adams are expected to also be there to meet,greet, sign autographs and take photos with fans. The evening will also feature a DJ and live band for West Indian-style partying ! TV Asia will cover the event, and American College Cricket players will be part of the event.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The Hall of Fame will recognize American College Cricket players who have left indelible legacies on the game, in the USA and Canada, by their performances on and off the field. Last year American College Cricket worked with the National Baseball Hall of Fame on the occasion of the historic cricket exhibit &#8220;Swinging Away &#8211; how Cricket and Baseball connect&#8221; and it was a reminder of the role of a Hall of Fame in preserving the legacy of players and the a sport.  </div>
</div>
<div> </div>
<div>American College Cricket was founded in October 2008 by Lloyd Jodah, and from December 2008 Chanderpaul has been the Patron and Brand Ambassador for American College Cricket. College teams in USA and Canada play for the Chanderpaul Trophy each year in March. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>American College Cricket has grown from zero teams to over 70 in 4 years, as it has motivated the development of cricket at the college-level &#8211; the &#8220;grass roots&#8221; of all major American sports historically.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Focused on more than just playing the game, American College Cricket has brought cricket mainstream attention it had not received since the early 1900s in America- in  College media plus the New York Times, Washington Post, NY Daily News, Sun Sentinel, Canada&#8217;s Globe and Mail and many more USA and Canadian media. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>In March 2010 American College Cricket did the first webstream of domestic cricket in USA and Canada, then in October the first TV broadcast. Now viewers can see American College Cricket matches every Saturday on TV Asia &#8211; as part of American College Cricket and TV Asia&#8217;s exclusive partnership !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>This Saturday Dec 15, the first inductee(s) in the American College Cricket Hall of Fame will be announced !</div>

<div><em>&#8220;Gentlemen: We wish, in the name of the Harvard University Cricket Association, to challenge, through your paper, Yale University to play a match game of cricket next spring, the date and place to be arranged here-after. The challenge will remain open until Feb. 1, 1888. Hoping that we shall soon have a favorable answer, we are yours very truly,</em></p>
<div><em></em></p>
<div>JAMES B. MARKOE, President.</p>
<div>T. WILLING BALCH, Treasurer.</p>
<div>REYNOLDS D. BROWN, Secretary.&#8221;</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The Harvard Crimson went on to say, <em>&#8220;There is no regular cricket eleven at Yale, but there must be many men who have played the game either at St. Paul&#8217;s School or elsewhere before going to college.&#8221;</em></div>
<div> </div>
<div>In connection with the above challenge, the New York Times said editorially:-</p>
<div>
<div><em>&#8220;The challenge of Harvard to Yale to meet her in a match at cricket would have more chance of acceptance were not this sport one of the few in which the New Haven institution as yet makes no pretensions to expertness.</em></div>
<div><em> </em></div>
<div><em>The great cricketing college is the University of Pennsylvania, which is very easily first in it. The laurels of base-ball, foot-ball, boating, tennis, or field and track athletics may pass from one institution to another during successive years, but no American college meets Pennsylvania on the wicket with much prospect of coming off victor.</em><em> </em></div>
<div><em>Haverford, Columbia and Harvard, however, often put fine elevens in the field, and it would probably give a great impulse to one of the most beneficial and least objectionable of college pastimes if Yale should now accept the Harvard challenge, pick out a team of cricketers, and with the opening of spring begin field practice in earnest.</em>&#8220;</div>
<div> </div>
<div><a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Harvard1885.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-10395" title="Harvard1885" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Harvard1885-300x283.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="283" /></a>Though there were other challenges our Research Dept (aka Google) has found no record of Yale fielding a cricket team,against Harvard or other universities, nor did cricket historian David Sentance.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>At the end of 2008 when Lloyd Jodah was beginning American College Cricket, Yale was one of the first colleges he was in contact with, a student named Varun Parundare, in attempting to start cricket clubs for the first American College Cricket Spring Break Championship.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>It was Parundare who gave Jodah the link showing the Spring Break dates for US colleges.  The promotional posters (scrapped) for the first American College Cricket Spring Break Championship listed Yale as one of the teams.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Ultimately Yale did not field a team, and University of Pennsylvania once again led the way to become the first Ivy League school to join American College Cricket, in 2010. However within the last month, Harvard, Cornell and Princeton have joined the national organisation, and played in the American College Cricket North East regional. Harvard defeated Princeton in their first meeting, on Oct 6.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>This semester the Yale club managed to pull together a team to take on their historic rivals Harvard, in a &#8220;friendly&#8221; cricket match as reported excellently here in the Yale Daily News:</div>
<div><a href="http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/2012/oct/16/yale-plays-first-ever-collegiate-cricket-match/">http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/2012/oct/16/yale-plays-first-ever-collegiate-cricket-match/</a></div>
<div> </div>
<div>So 150 years after an official cricket club was first started at Harvard (1862), and 124 years after the challenge was issued, Harvard and Yale finally met in a cricket match ! </div>
<div><a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Penn_Cricket_Field_in_New_Jersey.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-10397" title="Penn_Cricket_Field_in_New_Jersey" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Penn_Cricket_Field_in_New_Jersey-300x165.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="165" /></a></div>

<p><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000; font-size: x-small;">by Lloyd Jodah </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Cricket was being played on American universities campuses even in the 1700s and was known to be played at Harvard University in the early 1800s.</span></span></p>
<div> An official cricket club was established at Harvard by 1862 (University of Pennsylvania&#8217;s started in 1842). There is a report by the &#8220;father of baseball&#8221; Henry Chadwick, in 1891 about a Harvard vs UPenn cricket match which Harvard lost, scoring 55 to University of Penn&#8217;s 134.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Chadwick was a cricketer &amp; journalist who brought cricket stats to baseball, and wrote the rules of baseball in 1868.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Harvard also played against local teams like Longwood established by the Wright Brothers, two cricketers who began major league baseball (the Cincinatti Reds then Boston Red Sox). Longwood Cricket Club is where tennis&#8217; Davis Cup was begun by 4 Harvard students,in 1900.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>In 1874 Harvard University played McGill University in two &#8220;football&#8221; games that were pivotal in the creation of &#8220;American&#8221; football, leading to the adoption of &#8220;carrying&#8221; the ball and use of an &#8220;oblong&#8221; ball. Of course the Harvard-Yale football game became an annual tradition.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>In 1887 Harvard challenged Yale to cricket, which had no team, though there had been informal cricket at Yale in the early 1800s. Then in 1891 and 1892 Harvard University won the inter-collegiate Championship, which included University of Pennsylvania, Haverford College, Princeton, Columbia &amp; Cornell Universities. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>So, with this storied tradition in American sports its great to have Harvard University become a part of American College Cricket&#8217;s mission to bring back the original American &amp; Canadian game.</div>
<div> </div>
<div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Restarted 2011 by Ibrahim Khan,and approved as a club sport, the Harvard Cricket Club meets weekly either at Jordan Field or the Corporal Burns Courts next to Peabody Terrace.<a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Ibrahim.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-9417" title="Ibrahim" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Ibrahim-149x300.jpg" alt="" width="149" height="300" /></a></span></div>
<div> </div>
<div>There has been intermittent cricket at Harvard, but the last Inter-Collegiate Cricket Association championship took place in 1924 &#8211; the last time Harvard competed in meaningful cricket.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>
<div>In late 2008/early 2009 I was in communication with Varun Purandare at Yale, who was eager to play in the first American College Cricket Spring Break Championship and tried hard to, did not get a team together. So once again, Harvard is ahead in cricket.</div>
