George Washington University vs Cleveland State U

It was a hard fought game, GWU batted first and opener Vivek Hadkar 31 (3 fours) got them to a good start. Coming at # 5 Ashutosh blasted 48 (4 fours & 3 sixes) to take them to 141 in 20 overs.

Bowling for Cleveland State Pawan took 3 early wickets for 27 runs, but Ashutosh powered GWU’s recovery.

Cleveland State struggled, with only Abhilash of the early batsmen hitting 24 (3 fours) until Dhaval came to the rescue, smashing 6 fours & 2 sixes in a fantastic 53*. He hit the ball in the gaps to take over the game and win it for Cleveland State.

-

Carnegie Mellon vs Texas Tech

One of the first teams in American College Cricket, Carnegie Mellon returned to their 2nd American College Cricket National Cahmpionship. Two players, freshmen in 2009, returned as seniors, Sahil Jolly and Aayush.

Carnegie batted first, and put up a good total of 159 for 7. Naveen hit 53 (4 sixes, 4 fours) whilst Pratiq made 17.

Texas Tech never were out of the game, tough as the task was, and made 141. Raghav opened and made 37 (4 fours), Niihal Shah 27.

So Carnegie Mellon had returned to the sidefields of the Central Broward Regional Park, where it all started back in 2009.

-

Texas A & M vs Penn State

The Aggies won the toss and sent Penn state in to bat. Currently ranked at # 1, Texas A & M was eager to continue their unbeaten streak in American College Cricket.

However they were withut their top fast bowler Ockert Greyvenstein. Nevertheless, the Penn State batting struggled and made 83. Wasif took 3 wickets for 4 runs in 3 overs. Sudhakar 2 wickets for 19 in 4 overs.

A good opening partnership by Texas A & M openers, captain Hamza 23 (2 fours) and Anurag 32 (3 fours) set up the win for the Aggies. Left hander Anurag had been their top opener at the South West regional. Venkatesh 22 (2 fours & 1 six) took Texas A & M home for the win.

-

AUBURN UNIVERSTY vs U of HOUSTON CLEARLAKE

2010 South East Champion Auburn were restricted to 106 for 8 wickets against UHCL. Pramod topscoring with 30 (2 fours) whilst captain Naveen Thiaragrajan made 21 (2 fours). Varun ended on 20* (1 six).

Despite losing 2 of their top bowlers to graduation, Rahul Potghan and Ahmed Faraz, Auburn held the Clearlake batsmen and it took a captain’s knock by Prashant Manne of 57* (6 fours & 2 sixes) to get an excitingly close win for Houston Clearlake Blue Herons.

The win came after 19.3 overs.

Fresh from the success of the first American College Cricket Spring Break Championship at a match in Philadelphia between George Washington U and the University of Pennsylvania.

We chatted on the sidelines, since Hugo, who has never been mistaken for a great athlete, was not playing.

That Fall, Hugo told me that the GW Cricket Club could not come to the 2010 American College Cricket Championship, because of lack of resources, and other reasons.

My response was a tough one just as I’ve given to many other aspiring student leaders around the USA & Canada, meant to motivate them to help me do what had not been done before – establish a viable collegiate cricket platform.

About a month later Scheckter got back to me, forthrightly said I was right and that he had underestimated the desire of the Club to particpate, and that the GW Cricket Club would be coming to the 2010 national Championship ! He then did the organizing, together with the club founders Curt Sonnet, Ankit Sheth and Aly Sternberg, that ensured GW’s particaption, and the highest national ranking (15th) for any GWU sports club.

Scheckter & many others called it “the best Spring Break ever” and GW returned in 2010 under Shaan Mehta, and is now preparing for the 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Cahmpionship, led by Avad Nandhra.

Scheckter’s primary sport however is soccer, and he now plays an active role in GW’s Soccer Club where his success has even started rumors of him taking over as Manager of the English Soccer team.

His latest major accomplishment however, is as Club Sports Council President -he successfully lobbied for increased care for club sport athletes,so now

“Club sports athletes can now access the medical consultations varsity athletes use.“Club sports athletes will be able to attend free training sessions every Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. in the Smith Center’s training rooms, with care provided by graduate assistant athletics trainers.” -from the GW Hatchet.

This is a very significant accomplishment, as universities have the resources to better support students participating at the Club Sport level-if student leadership motivates them.

From his start as President of the GW Cricket Club in 2009, Hugo has been exercising the leadership skills, and can do attitude, that will better his chances of getting a great job, and being successful, after college.

Of course he might simply take over running his father’s Laverstoke beer brewing business in England, a tough job but someone has to do it.

http://americancollegecricket.com/2010/05/27/he-makes-beer-hangs-at-the-indy-500to-be-popular-on-campus/

<g:plusone href="http://americancollegecricket.com/2011/04/22/the-return-of-sherlock-holmes-or-forest-gump-the-ipad-mystery/" size="tall" ></g:plusone>

Hugo Scheckter GWU, 20, is self described as having “stunning good looks and fantastic dress sense” and according to Digitallife is a “wise-cracking soccer and cricket-playing” student. Our investigative reporters have found NO evidence to support these claims but Scheckter, as President of the George Washington University Cricket Club came to the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship.

Later in the year Hugo was spotted in the pits at the Indianapolis 500, the British Barbeque Championship (!) and the soccer World Cup in South Africa.

Quickly developing a Forest Gump-like renown, Hugo’s fellow students in American College Cricket and George Washington University have been wondering where he’ll turn up next – and its been in the Washington Post and on Fox TV news !

Along the way Hugo got elected President of the GW Soccer Club, and ran for the student Senate. He’s also now the Managing Editor of ”The GW Patriot” a school paper, and President of Club Sports at GWU .

However recently someone stole his iPad, his laptop and cash from his dorm. The $ 500 cash Hugo had earned as a soccer Coach. Hugo then did the modern day version of a cowboy tracking down stolen horses or cattle from his American side,or channeling his inner British became Sherlock Holmes.

Scheckter turned on the Apple app “Mobile Me” (which he had downloaded) in his iPad, and tracked the iPad to a house in Maryland. Simultaneously he kept his Facebook friends updated, many of whom offered to go “gangsta” on the person they thought was the thief. Hugo however told the Washington Post he didn’t “want to call my mother in England and explain a Rambo-style operation gone wrong”.

Instead he informed the Police who went to the house and recovered the iPad. The man from whom the iPad was recovered said he purchased it from another man whom he described (note the use of “whom” not “who”). According to the Washington Post and Scheckter, Police and GW Police are investigating and looking for that man.

Hugo, a sophomore studying sports management, tweeted, “Just picked up my iPad from the station!! Pretty awesome!”

Apparently Will.i.am of Black Eye Peas also used Mobile Me to track down his stolen Bentley last year, which has prompted Scheckter to change his name to Scheck.t.er.

There is no technology yet to find the career of Lauryn Hill.

READ our first story on Hugo

Once again an early start meant dewy conditions, this time at Brian

innings at the top of the order gave OSU a good platform from which to

Two wickets in his last over, V.Khatri put a dampener on the end of the OSU’s innings ending with
figures of twenty seven for four. The run chase for GWU started
superbly with the opening partnership taking them all the way to 88.
The run chase came down to the last ball and with the final single GWU
got over the line. GWU win by 5 wickets.

Thunderbird batting first made it to 108 for 9 losing wickets at
regular intervals. No batsman lasted long and the high score was 16.
Texas too had a sluggish innings, but they made the runs with 2 overs
to spare. N Shah was a highlight for the innings when he top scored
with 38 from 15 balls, including 4 sixes! Texas win by 4 Wickets.

Auburn University vs University of Florida
A wicket in the second over gave UF a rocky start and no batsman
looked settled on a pitch that kept low. The only score of note, on
their way to a total of 100, was S. Pohekan who blazed 4 sixes in his
total of 28. With a deceptively small score to chase, AU seemed
confident, but a wicket on the fourth ball was an unwelcome surprise.
The AU ship was steadied by N. Thaiagarajan who scored a majestic 56
(4 fours and 2 sixes) to bring them home for the win, in the last
over. AU win by 7 wickets.

George Washington University vs University of Houston
In an almost a reverse innings, UH scored at a belligerent 8.4 runs an
over, until they were suddenly halted by a small collapse of 5
wickets. Top scores from I. Ahmed of 40 and S. Abbasi of 30
respectively set the target at a competitive 147. GWU, coming off a
win in the morning, could not find their feet in the batting and were
all out for 102. A real treat came from A. Nandra who scored an
upbeat 51, in the dying stages of the match. UH win by 36 runs.

He was seen on the National Mall in Washington DC playing cricket. Then he was spotted at the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship in March. Now this month he has been seen at the Indianapolis 500 race, hanging with race car drivers. Who are we talking about ? Forest Gump ?

No, its Hugo Scheckter of George Washington University, and he had a reason to be at the American College Cricket Championship, he was the President of the GWU Cricket Club, in his words “GW’s only nationally ranked team” and the “# 19 nationally ranked college cricket club” . At the Indianapolis 500 race Hugo is on the Pit Crew for his brother Tomas Scheckter.

Tomas Scheckter, now a veteran race driver, was the Indy 500 co-Rookie of the year in 2002. He started in go-karts in South Africa and progressed to Formula Racing in Europe. In 2006 he had 9 top 10 finishes in the IndyCar Series. Their father, Jody Scheckter was the 1979 Formula One Champion.

Latest news is that Hugo makes Beer, on his family farm in England, Laverstoke Park Farm. The beer is about to go on the market in the USA. We couldn’t help but wonder….is this all a giant scheme to make Hugo popular on campus ? Is this all just an elaborate set-up to get him girls ?

Our Investigative Reporter caught up with Hugo at the Indianapolis 500 and asked him some hard-hitting questions:

1. Tell us about the Laverstoke Park Farm, and do you really make Beer ?

My dad created the farm in 1996 to create the best food for his family, and it grew rapidly into the large company it is today! The beer organic, and there is an ale and a lager. It is bottled and grown with special crops from England, and should be available nationwide in the coming weeks !

2. Was the Beer making at your family’s farm your idea to help you get friends on campus ?

I’d like to think so. Most business decisions nowadays are made by how popular it can make your kids, and I’m glad to see my Dad did so. I bet Hugh Hefner’s son’s are also delighted with the route their dad took !

3. Describe the sound, the smell and the atmosphere of the pit and the racetrack.

It is amazing. Every time a car goes past at 230mph, you feel it run through your body. The smell is burning rubber, mixed with the corn based ethanol the cars run on, which has a unique, sweet smell. My favorite part of the month is the national anthem before the race. 300,000 people jammed in, all singing the last line of the Star Spangled Banner, and then the flyover. Stunning.

4. Have you been inside a Grand Prix or Formula One race car,and have you driven one ?
-
I actually got wedged into my Dad’s Ferrari from back in the day. I’m not really the right build for it, but I got in anyway, and got stuck inside! They had to take the bodywork off to get me out! I’ve never driven them, it would scare the crap out of me! I am hoping to do a two seater experience here at Indy in the next few weeks!

5. When you were pulled over for speeding in D.C did you tell the cop that it was not your fault, that your family has a tradition of speeding ?

This was actually on the way back from Wooster for the Triangular Cricket -tournament there! I drove the whole way both their and back (about 8 hrs) and with about 15 mins to go I got clocked doing 36 in a 30, despite going at about 90 on the freeway the whole way. It was a camera not a cop, and it never came in the mail, so I guess they heard that I’m probably okay to drive quickly !

6. Now that England has ended their drought in World Championships in sports by winning the 2010 World T20 Cricket Championship, how does it feel and do you regret leaving the GW Cricket Club ? Perhaps you would have finally been allowed to play ?
-
As my South African side of the family tells me, most of the players who won aren’t actually English! I’m proud that England won, and despite having split allegiances to England, USA and South Africa, I’m still a little bit more English! As for playing, I fielded against American University and against Wooster, but never batted or bowled, which was certainly a good thing for the team.
My talents are far better utilized doing paperwork and carrying water, which is actually what I’m doing at the Indy 500 this summer!

7. What’s it like having a brother as a Race Car driver ?

It’s cool – never really known anything else as both my older brothers have been racing since I was about 6… It’s almost like Tomas is a brother, friend and client all rolled into one. We’re related, but we hang out like friends do, but when we are at the track it all goes out the window, and if I’m not on my game then I’ll be in trouble like any other employee! It’s great fun though!

8. You claimed that being President of the GW Cricket put a strain on you, and affected your Academic performance to the point where you were on “Academic Probation”. Yet you are now running the GW Soccer Club. Did you tell us the truth ? Do we have a scandal here ? Are you just another politician ?
-
Wow, Lloyd, not pulling any punches here! Cricket wasn’t the reason I was put on probation – It was a mix up on my part. In England the grade boundaries are much lower (about 60 is a B) so I never thought to check that they could be different! I found out a week before finals but it was too late! I ended up with a 0.9 GPA and on probation, but I’ve rebounded this semester with a 3.2, and that’s with going to the 2010 American College Cricket Championships!

Cricket was the best thing I did since coming to GWU, and I learnt so much. The time was right to leave cricket, and GW cricket is going to go from strength to strength with Victor Williams running things. GW Cricket and the ACC have made me more of a cricket fan than I ever was back home, and I’ve loved it. I’m looking forward to working with Soccer, but am also pumped to running the Club Sports Council, which has just agreed with GWU Administrators to quadruple the club sports budget! The only scandal going around is that I wasn’t named President of the All American cricket Team!! Haha
