2011 was a great year for Hashim Raza Khan - President Obama made him an American citizen for winning the national title at the American College Cricket Spring Break Championship ! (just kidding !).

Hashim’s George Mason Patriots did win the Chanderpaul Trophy for the national title, then later in the year he did become an American citizen – now he’s a 2011 American College Cricket Player of the Year !

The first time Hashim Khan and I spoke, was in early 2009, when I was trying to create teams for the first American College Cricket Spring Break Championship – I had announced a national Championship in Dec 2008, but there were no real college teams to play !

We didn’t get a GMU team for March 2009, but Hashim came to New York to play on a College All Star team that summer. Then together we worked on making a team for the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship.

For various reasons an official club was not established at Mason until 2011, so at school Hashim did practically all the organising. Bringing cricketers who play in local leagues into a college team presents challenges, as a college club has different expectations and responsibilities beyond on field play.

In the 2010 Spring Break nationals the George Mason Patriots missed making the final four by only 1 Bonus point, but Hashim never complained about losing the opportunity so narrowly.

Then later, in the first 2010 Mid Atlantic regional a strong North Carolina State Wolfpack team devoured the GMU Patriots in the Finals, but the disappointment again only fueled Hashim’s determination to win the Chanderpaul Trophy in Florida !

Hashim put together sponsorship for both Spring Break trips by the Mason team, and at school pressed for a cricket field to be included in the university’s planned new sports complex.

Then after spending a week in South Beach partying….er.. I mean, preparing intensely for the 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship, Hashim led the Patriots to take a national title home to George Mason University. Two Washington Post’s columnists wrote about the accomplishment !

Mason players like Shabir Adrali also took part in a presentation to school kids attending the Championship.

Later Hashim committed his team to playing at the Cricket Weekend at the National Baseball Hall of Fame Cricket Exhibition: “Swinging Away – how cricket and baseball connect”. However the game was cancelled due to lack of a field in Cooperstown, close to the Hall of Fame.

So far we have not mentioned Hashim’s actual on field play! He is a top all rounder who opens the bowling and batting. In March he took 9 wickets and bowled well, but only batted once, in the Finals, scoring 24. Unselfish captain that he is, he bats low in the order to give his other talented batsmen opportunities.

He said, “Winning the national Championship was a dream come through, and I’m happy I’m the first Captain to start this tradition at George Mason. I thought my team was the best of the best in college cricket, and did exceptionally well to make their University proud.”

From the beginning Hashim Khan has shown a strong understanding of what American College Cricket is about, and is always ready to do his part. He is truly an American College Cricket Player of the Year, as not just the Captain of 2011 National Champions George Mason University, but as the architect of its title-winning cricket club.

Largely through Hashim Khan’s efforts, George Mason went, in just over 2 years, from having no cricket team to a national Championship and national, even International, recognition ! Next, a cricket field as part of the sports complex !

Hashim will graduate in 2012 or spring 2013 with a major in Finance. He currently also works as a Budget controller for an IT firm.

Likely contenders for the top 10 this college cricket season are 2010 Midwest Champion Purdue, University of Houston and Canadian Champion Ryerson University.

Despite winning non-collegiate tournaments in the DC area, UMBC have not found the same success at the College level, and dropped from # 6 to # 18.

George Washington University has shown improvement, moving up in the rankings whilst new teams, Sheridan College’s and McGill’s performances in the Canadian Championship indicate their growing strength.

2010 Northeast Champion Rutgers had a disappointing performance at the nationals but could jump back up the rankings in the upcoming Northeast and Southeast Championships respectively.

By the end of the regional Championships we may have a new # 1 as Montgomery, 2010 Southeast Champion Auburn, UPenn, USC, 2010 Mid Atlantic Champion North Carolina State and USF are poised to topple National Champion & 2011 Chanderpaul Trophy winner George Mason !

1-George Mason University – 2011 National Champions, winner of the Chanderpaul Trophy
32-York College
33-Virgina Tech

These are the Top 33 of the aproximately 50 college cricket teams that will particpate in the 2011 regional Championships of American College Cricket. If you don’t see your College’s name – its simple, you can crack the Top 33 in the regionals.

Factors for Rankings:

1.The final four at the nationals, the 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship, automatically claim the top four ranks.
2.Number of games won in the National and Conference Championships
3.Participation in the national Championship. Teams in the nationals automatically rank above those that were not.
4.Promotion of American College Cricket
5.Other criteria such as quality of opponents’ record may apply.

The announcement was made ahead of the scheduled India-US Education Summit in Washington in October. The schools are :

George Mason University (2011 Chanderpaul Trophy winners) , Rutgers University (2010 American College Cricket Northeast Champions), Northern Illinois University, Queens College (CUNY) alma mater of Jerry Senfeld, Rollins College, Suffolk University, Thomas College, University of Kentucky, University of Oregon (home of 2010 natonal football champs Oregon Ducks), Fort Hays State University and the University of Montana.

The Institute of International Education said each school has made a commitment to form a campus-wide task force to work on prospective partnerships, conduct an institution-wide inventory of activities pertaining to India and develop a strategic plan focused on partnership with India.

The Knowledge Initiative between the US and India, which was announced during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to America last year, is aimed at developing faculty for select institutions like new IITs.

The initiative will provide USD 10 million in combined funding to increase university linkages and support junior faculty development between US and Indian universities.

“India and its institutions are logical partners for the University because of the growing number of Indian students who come to the US and because UM has areas of academic strength increasingly important to developing countries such as India,” said Peter Baker, the international development programme officer for University of Montana International Programmes.

“Higher education is an important area of the strategic partnership between the United States and India because of its impact on fostering collaboration on critical issues that we face today,” said IIE President Allan E Goodman. “This new phase of the International Academic Partnership Programme and the strong group of campuses will strengthen the educational ties between our two nations and pave the way for students from both countries to gain important international perspective”.

No doubt the other nine schools will begin to take a better look at the India’s game, cricket.

<g:plusone href="http://americancollegecricket.com/2011/03/28/national-champions-george-mason-patriots-photos/" size="tall" ></g:plusone>

The first time Hashim Khan and I (Lloyd Jodah) spoke, was probably through Facebook in early 2009 , when I was trying to create teams for the first American College Cricket Spring Break Championship – I had announced a national Championship in Dec 2008, but there were no real college teams to play lol !

Hashim didn’t get a team together for March 2009, but he came to New York to play on a College All Star team against the first national Champions, Montgomery College. Then together we worked on getting a team together for the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship. Like all of the college teams, a collection of guys who had not played together before, the Mason team played below its obvious potential. Still it was a last ditch effort by Montgomery College that kept George Mason out of the final four, but Hashim never complained about losing the opportunity by 1 Bonus point.

In countless phone conversations between Hashim & I throughout the year,we discussed sponsorship, facilties on campus for cricket and establishment of a formal club. Hashim’s support and loyalty to American College Cricket and his passion for the game is unquestionable, even as he enjoys the night life of South Beach.

So its no surprise that he managed to finally wield the talented players of George Mason University into a team of national Champions ! Like Champions in every sport, George Mason went through a tough rival, Montgomery, to the Championship and win the Chanderpaul Trophy !

Now as Hashim Khan is about to become an American citizen – he is also captain of a national Champion team, and is a true American College Cricketer.

Chanderpaul Trophy designed by American College Cricket & Cricketzone’s Ravi Etwaroo.

George Mason’s basketball team might have lost on Sunday, but the day wasn’t all bad for Patriot loyalists. The Mason club cricket team topped Montgomery College, 138-124, to win the Chanderpaul Trophy, considered collegiate cricket’s national title. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE
