Last Saturday, Oct 27 the Finals were televised, with commentary by Lloyd Jodah & Jamie Lloyd (from CricHQ & New Zealand) and students Sameer Mohd (Iowa State) and Asad Khawaja (OSU).

MID WEST FINALS – IOWA STATE vs OHIO STATE

The first regional championship of American College Cricket was hosted by the Buckeyes Cricket Club under its then President Romal Somavat. Somavat went on to be the 2010 Regional Tournaments MVP for on & Off the Field accomplishments as he was able to get OSU President Gordon Gee to attend. Somavat also smashed 97 and 55*. At the end of the Year Somavat was announced as a 2010 College Player of the Year.

Fro 2012 it was appropriate that OSU should defend the Gordon Gee Trophy it won in 2011, on its campus field. Its opponent Iowa State University had performed well at the Nationals, getting to the final 16.

Batting first the Iowa State batsmen couldn’t get a handle on the OSU bowlers as Anupam Vivek and Somavat kept it tight putting pressure on the batsmen leading to Sannel Patel’s run out by Rachit, and Nitin by Vivek. A wicket by Somavat and Iowa State was 19 for 3 !

Another run out and 2 wickets for 13 runs by Kislaya Kannan and Iowa State could only manage 73 before being all out in 16.2 overs.

Ohio State’s Somavat made 15 as he and Kislaya Kannan put on 38 for the first wicket. Kannan delighted with gorgeous shots around the wicket giving TV Asia viewers a real look at some of the talent in American College Cricket.

Kannan’s 45* in 28 balls with 5 fours and 1 six was an exciting demonstration of exquisite strokeplay as Ohio State retained the Gordon Gee Trophy, on TV Asia in the first cricket matches televised from a US college campus !

Ohio State captain Kislaya Kannan was the TV Asia Match MVP. SCORECARD & other stats :

UNIVERSITY OF IOWA HAWKEYES vs OHIO STATE BUCKEYES – televised on Oct 20

The University of Iowa Hawkeyes squeezed into the Semi finals of the American College Cricket Mid West Championship, but then had to face 2011 Gordon Gee Trophy winners, Ohio State.

Playing on their homefield on campus for the TV Asia cameras Ohio State was pretty confident, especially with Romal Somavat having rocked a century in a preliminary match vs College of Wooster.

Batting first Iowa found it tough going against OSU’s bowlers, particularly Romal Somavat who struck early to make Iowa 17 for 1 after 3.2 overs. Somavat finished with 3 wickets for 13 runs in his 4 overs. For Iowa Gupta made 28 in 34 balls, hitting 2 fours as the Hawkeyes made 90 for 8 in their 18 overs.

Somavat, who always looks to attack, smashed 2 sixes before getting out at 19 but the Captain Kislaya Kannan,20, Neeraj 27 and Bodhi 12* steered the Ohio State Buckeyes to an easy win in 10.3 overs, losing only 3 wickets as Ohio State ensured they got to the finals of the Mid West Championship.

Romal Somavat was the TV Asia Match MVP. SCORECARD & other stats:

-

Founder and President of American College Cricket Lloyd Jodah, together with the 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship MVP Adil Bhatti have been invited to the Ribbon cutting Ceremony to open the Exhibit.

In a quote to the NY Daily News Jodah said,” it is wonderful that the National Baseball Hall of Fame is recognizing the history of cricket as the original American game, and its role in the development of baseball. This Exhibition is of enormous significance, and significantly enhances what we are doing with American College Cricket.”

Swinging Away: How Cricket and Baseball Connect is the first major Museum exhibition dedicated to exploring the roots of both sports and their relationship, featuring game-used equipment from historic moments in both sports, while delving into the origins, history and cultural impact each holds on its respective nations where the games are most revered.

Created in conjunction with the Marylebone Cricket Club of London, Swinging Away will be on display in Cooperstown through February 2012, in its lone visit to North America, following a successful run during the summer of 2010 at MCC, the world’s most famous cricket club.

“Swinging Away captures cricket’s rich history along side baseball’s evolution into America’s National Pastime,” said Jeff Idelson, President, National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. “Just as baseball fans make the pilgrimage to Cooperstown to experience the spiritual journey in tracing baseball’s past, so too do cricket fans in making their way to Lord’s in London, to experience the home of cricket. By collaborating on this exhibit with MCC and bringing these treasures to Cooperstown, we are providing fans throughout North America the opportunity to view cricket’s glorious history, while learning more about the relationship between these two pastimes.”

The exhibit reveals some remarkable surprises, dispels some cherished convictions and sets out for the first time to explore these two great bat and ball sports side by side. The collection includes uniforms and equipment worn by the biggest names of each sport, including as Derek Jeter and Andrew Flintoff, Bengie Molina and Adam Gilchrist, Kumar Sangakkara, Paul Collingwood, Robin Wallace and Charlotte Edwards and Shahid Afridi.

Additionally, dozens of artifacts which have never before left the prestigious C.C. Morris Cricket Library and Collection in Philadelphia will be a part of the exhibition in Cooperstown, furthering the study of the two sport’s equipment, rules and laws, key historical moments, and more.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum will host two signature events in conjunction with Swinging Away’s exhibition in Cooperstown this spring, and public programs throughout the summer will provide visitors a further insight into the exhibition and the relationship between the sports.

On Sunday, April 17, special programs will feature the Haverford College varsity cricket team in a variety of public demonstrations and presentations. Plans and programs are still in the development stages for the Hall of Fame’s Cricket Weekend, June 3-5, with additional details to be announced soon.

Among the treasures featured in the Swinging Away exhibit:

1- Rare touring jerseys including one in which Casey Stengel met King George V in 1924 and a unique poster of the first truly global baseball tour organized by Hall of Famer Albert Spalding in 1888
2- Baseball bats used by Babe Ruth and Barry Bonds
3- One of the oldest crickets bat ever discovered alongside the most recent `Mongoose’ and the new experimental colored cricket balls
4- Rare photographs and personal items belonging to America’s greatest cricketer, J `Bart’ King, a `Gentleman of Philadelphia’ and to Hall of Famer Harry Wright – a cricketer and early baseball star and manager of the Cincinnati Red Stockings.

In an added statement American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah noted, “This exhibition highlights the British origins of both Baseball and Cricket, and can remind Americans that cricket, as the original American sport is as American as apple pie. Some of the most important people at the beginning of baseball’s rise were cricket players.

In reverse, Danny Tomes ) Wooster), Casper MacKenzie ( Texas Tech) and Curt Sonnett (GWU alumni) are 3 of our college cricket players who come from a baseball background. We paid homage to John Bart King with the Award named after him, which Ian Carlin won.”

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is open seven days a week year round, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The Museum observes regular hours of 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. from Labor Day until Memorial Day Weekend. From Memorial Day through the day before Labor Day, the Museum is open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. seven days a week.

Ticket prices are $19.50 for adults (13 and over), $12 for seniors (65 and over) and for those holding current memberships in the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and AMVets organizations, and $7 for juniors (ages 7-12). Members are always admitted free of charge and there is no charge for children 6 years of age or younger.

<g:plusone href="http://americancollegecricket.com/2010/12/17/wooster-president-grant-cornwell-joins-american-college-cricket-advisory-board/" size="tall" ></g:plusone>
American College Cricket is pleased to announce that Grant Cornwell, President of the College of Wooster is now on the Advisory Board of American College Cricket.

Prior to the College of Wooster cricket club’s participation in the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship in March its President Grant Cornwell issued a Press Release which made the Fox Sports website. Later in the year Wooster played at the Midwest Championship against Big 10 colleges.

Meanwhile President Cornwell decided to honor the team by having a cricket game at Homecoming (in the football stadium). The event was a huge success pulling in a record 967 spectators, and this now stands as the largest crowd known, at an American college cricket game.

“Though cricket is the original sport in the USA, the Wooster Homecoming Cricket game marked an epochal moment in the sport’s comeback in the USA,” declared American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah, “I won’t be surprised if, in the future, Grant Cornwell is honored by the International Cricket Council (ICC).”

We quote liberally from the College of Wooster website :

“Grant H. Cornwell took office as The College of Wooster’s 11th president on July 1, 2007…….he holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and biology from St. Lawrence University and a master’s and doctorate in philosophy, both from the University of Chicago.Cornwell served as vice president of the university and dean of academic affairs at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., from 2002 to 2007.

“Nationally recognized for his work in defining liberal learning in a global environment, Cornwell served on the national advisory board of Liberal Education and Global Citizenship: The Arts of Democracy, a three-year faculty and curriculum development initiative of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, from 2001 to 2004.

He also served as a fellow of the National Learning Communities Project, a leadership group convened by the Washington Center for Improving the Quality of Undergraduate Education, from 2000 to 2004.

Currently, Cornwell serves on the advisory board for the National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education and is a member of the SAGE Group, formed as a collective of national educational leaders by the Association of American Colleges and Universities.”

Under Cornwell, the College of Wooster was named by U.S. News & World Report in the top 5 liberal arts colleges that “do the best job of educating undergraduates” in 2009 & 2010.

He will embark on a two-week, four-city tour of India in late January to meet with Wooster alumni and parents, visit high schools, and confer with higher education colleagues. No doubt cricket will be a big topic of conversation, and unquestionably some future American College Cricket stars will be Googling “Wooster” and “Cornwell”. Whilst doing so they should look up “Kilts” and “Fighting Scots” !

He also understands the value the sport has to US Universities as a growing recruitment tool. Cornwell now joins Ohio State University President E Gordon Gee as an American College Cricket Advisory Board member.

Will we get a photo of the the “Fighting Scots” President and American College Cricket Advisory Board member with Sachin Tendulkar ? We can only hope.
He will be accompanied by Peg Cornwell, associate to the president for community, trustee, and parent relations, and Shila Garg, professor of physics and former dean of the faculty.

The group will visit Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Delhi. This is the first time a Wooster president has scheduled a series of alumni events in India, where the college has recruited students for decades. That recruitment drive has recently gotten a major boost through cricket, according to Nicola Kille, of Wooster’s Ambassador Program and Faculty Advisor for the cricket club.

In October, for its Homecoming, the College of Wooster played cricket and pulled a record 967 fans into the football stadium for the game.Though cricket is the original college sport in the USA this event marked an epochal moment in the sport’s comeback in the USA. It followed upon Wooster’s cricket team’s particpation in the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship in March, and the Midwest Championship in Sept.

“Wooster has a long history of engagement in India, going back to the earliest days of the college,” Cornwell said, “and with initiatives like our Global Social Entrepreneurship program, the Hales Fund study group of faculty who travelled there in 2008, and new courses being developed that will be taught in India in 2012, our engagement continues to deepen. I’m very excited to have this chance to meet with our alumni, explore opportunities with higher education leaders, and continue to spread the word about Wooster to prospective students in India.”

American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah said, “American College Cricket is demonstrating how important cricket can be to USA Universities as a student recruitment tool, and President Cornwell is in the forefront of appreciating that. We expect to see more US and Canadian colleges taking advantage of the opportunities cricket present.”

The College of Wooster is an independent liberal arts college, nationally recognized for an innovative curriculum that emphasizes mentored, independent research. Founded in 1866, the college has approximately 2,000 students and is located on a picturesque campus in Ohio.

College of Wooster has already confirmed its Registration for the 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship in March, in Florida.

In March 2010 a cricket team from the College of Wooster played in the 2nd American College Cricket Spring Break Championship, then last month Wooster competed in the Midwest Championship for the E Gordon Gee Trophy.

This Homecoming Wooster President Grant Cornwell decided to give the cricket club a place in the spotlight. After all, the college has a large number of international students and alumni, and the match would be a great way to showcase diversity, both on campus and in the community.

The saga began earlier this year when Earlham College dropped out of the North Coast Athletic Conference, leaving the Fighting Scots football team with an opening on Oct. 9. It was too late to change the date for Homecoming and too late to find another team, meaning the stadium would be vacant on this traditional day of celebration for the first time in the 112 years of intercollegiate football at Wooster.

Coincidentally, this year’s Forum — Wooster’s annual fall lecture series — focused on South Asia, where cricket is extremely popular. Last week, Cornwell added another element to the plan by attempting to draw the largest crowd ever to watch a college cricket match in the U.S.

Nicola Kille of Wooster’s Ambassador Program and other College officials scrambled to find the current record, which was pegged at 400 at a game organized by American College Cricket last year. Word spread quickly across campus and throughout the community, and by late Saturday afternoon, a record 967 fans had filed into John P. Papp Stadium to watch the college’s cricket

Cricket Crowd at Wooster's Joseph P Papp Stadium

team take on a team from the community consisting of professionals in business and industry who had played in their native countries before relocating to the U.S.

“This event is very representative of The College of Wooster,” said Cornwell. “It’s what makes us distinctive. Not only does it illustrate the college’s spirit, but it also shows that we have a sense of humor. I think something like this could only happen here at Wooster.”

The community team batted first and scored 141 runs, but the college team charged back, and team captain Maaz Khan delivered a dramatic game-winning hit with just one out remaining to give the college team an exciting 143-141 victory.

“Words aren’t enough to express what Wooster’s accomplishment means,” American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah said, “In our effort to make cricket once again a true American college sport this Homecoming event is of enormous significance and truly historic.”

“This is particularly remarkable as Wooster only has about 2,000 students” added VP Nino DiLoreto.

“Cricket was the original American college sport, with the first college sports team being a cricket team at Haverford College in 1834.Cricket was the premiere sport in the USA until about the 1880′s and crowds of thousands watched the first International sporting event, a cricket game USA vs Canada, in 1844 in New York.

The College of Wooster is featuring the Original American game – cricket, in its Homecoming Celebrations ! The very first college sports team formed in the USA was a cricket team in 1834, and the game was the first major American sport in college or outside, so this is of huge significance in the return of cricket to its American roots.

At 5-10, 225 lbs, Ian Carlin looks like the running back he was, now he is the President of the College of Wooster Cricket club and the former Fighting Scot running back will play an important role when the cricket team takes on a group of players from the Wooster area on Saturday, Oct. 9, at John P. Papp Stadium (weather permitting).

The match, which is free and open to the public, begins at 4:30 p.m. and will be one of the main attractions on Homecoming weekend
“We’re looking forward to raising the profile of the sport in our community,” says Nicola Kille, assistant director of Global Engagement and adviser to the cricket club. “It will also be a perfect tie in with the Wooster Forum, which is focusing on South Asian perspectives this fall.”

“It’s a great sport, and it’s really not all that hard to learn,” says Carlin, a senior who serves as club president and is one of two American-born players on the Fighting Scots’ roster. “I love the passion and enthusiasm of the players.” He also appreciates the guidance of Graham Ford, British-born head men’s soccer coach, who has been serving as the club’s volunteer coach.

Be prepared for an extra-large dose of Scot Spirit and bring your best black, gold, and tartan memories and memorabilia for another fantastic Homecoming Weekend at The College of Wooster.

Homecoming Parade and Late Night Bonfire

Join us on Friday evening as we bring back one of Wooster’s storied traditions – the Homecoming Parade! Cow Cut-Outs, Scot Marching Band, and the pipers will lead fellow, students, alumni, and friends down Beall Ave to the annual Late Night Bonfire in the Knarden Quad to kick off Homecoming 2010.

CRICKET GAME – Saturday Oct 9- 4.30pm at Joseph P. Papp Stadium

Come watch and learn about The College of Wooster’s nationally recognized cricket team. The Cricket club team participated in the American College Cricket Spring Championship in Florida last March, and the Midwest Championship last month.

Join President Grant Cornwell as he throw’s out the ceremonial “first” ball !

All Campus Celebrations
In the afternoon there will be an all-campus tailgate- all are welcome! In the evening, stick around for a Homecoming Celebration in Lowry. There will be something for everyone- be sure to stop by!

1. Where in the US are you from ?
I was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania a.k.a The City of Champions.

2. Sports you played and now play.
-I was a typical American boy. Growing up I played Football, Baseball, Basketball, and ran Track.I also did other exotic sports such as Semi-Professional Paintball and casual Snowboard. I played football till College. I as intrigued by Cricket, and knew of its massive International following I always wanted to give it a shot so I did.

I currently am Vice-President of the Wooster Cricket Club, and continue to Snowboard during the Season.

3. What brought you to cricket ?
The lure of the game and a little push from some friends. The passion for the game given off by club members, especially for the IPL and the T20. Along with almost fanatic like support by their fans. I first watched a match between India and Pakistan, and let me tell you I should have remained neutral but I chose a side, but from that exact moment on I was hooked.

From that moment I had to try,but it was not until Junior Year I got the opportunity to try. I started out as a fielder as I had decent skills that transferred somewhat from Baseball, but later in the season I found my true calling,Wicket-Keeping.I also bat at # 4th or 5.

4. You participated in the 2010 American College Cricket Championship. What was that like ?
The 2010 American College Cricket Championship was a very fun filled experience andreat teaching tool. It taught and gave to our club many opportunities and experiences. It taught us that we have the ability to compete as a small college of less than 2,000 students with clubs that have student bodies in the tens of thousands, however it humbled us to the talent and skill that already exists in the College Cricket scene.

There are many great players that came to the tournament, and gave us a much needed awakening to both practice harder and smarter. The American College Cricket Championship also gave us connections,to other clubs and ed our eyes to a large cricket community that actually exists in the United States today.

5. In a great breakthrough, Wooster will be having Cricket for HOMECOMING of Students vs Alumnis. What does having cricket for Homecoming mean to the Cricket Club ?

Homecoming is extremely important for this Club. It will allow us to open the eyes of Alumni and Parents and many others to the passion that is shown by Cricketers. It can give us a chance to expose the game and our club so that it may grow and allow us continued support from The College of Wooster.

We’ve been getting great support from Wooster President Grant Cornwell, and Ambassador Program Coordinator Nicola Kille.

6. Other plans for Wooster Cricket Club next Semester ?
We are looking to expand next season and participate in a fall American College Cricket Regional Cricket tournament. We’ll also have GW and CMU back for another Tri-Tournament. Of course we will be participating in the 2011 American College Cricket Championship.

7. What do your friends, NOT from a cricket background, now think about cricket- are they more interested ?
My Non-Cricket friends have actually asked a lot about the sport and are interested, it really opened their eyes to how large the sport really is.

8. You academic background:
I’m a double major in both Political Science and Philosophy and a member of the Educational Policy Committee here at the College as a Student Representative.

9. Some Personal details:
I listen mostly to Hip-Hop and Oldies, but there is nothing I won’t listen to. My favorite movie is Crazy Heart with Jeff Bridges. I’m a massive Pittsburgh Homer for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins.

My favorite IPL team is Kolkata Knight Riders despite their rather unimpressive record and my T20 favorite team is Ireland. I expected India to win the T20 World cup in spectacular fashion!

10. Any personal heroes ? in or out of cricket.
One Hero for me in Cricket is Ian Healy (the great Queensland & Australian Wicket-keeper/Batsman)

Ian Carlin (left), he worked hard and his athletic ability is uncanny, but his work ethic really taugh me that even I could be a decent cricketer if I just put forth the work needed to be done.

My personal hero is my father, Jim Carlin. He always allowed me to follow any dream or interest I had when I was a child that has made me as diverse as I am today. There is no where near enough words describe what he means to me, but he truly is a Hero, not only for me but because of the great man he is.
