George Washington University vs Cleveland State U

It was a hard fought game, GWU batted first and opener Vivek Hadkar 31 (3 fours) got them to a good start. Coming at # 5 Ashutosh blasted 48 (4 fours & 3 sixes) to take them to 141 in 20 overs.

Bowling for Cleveland State Pawan took 3 early wickets for 27 runs, but Ashutosh powered GWU’s recovery.

Cleveland State struggled, with only Abhilash of the early batsmen hitting 24 (3 fours) until Dhaval came to the rescue, smashing 6 fours & 2 sixes in a fantastic 53*. He hit the ball in the gaps to take over the game and win it for Cleveland State.

Carnegie Mellon vs Texas Tech

One of the first teams in American College Cricket, Carnegie Mellon returned to their 2nd American College Cricket National Cahmpionship. Two players, freshmen in 2009, returned as seniors, Sahil Jolly and Aayush.

Carnegie batted first, and put up a good total of 159 for 7. Naveen hit 53 (4 sixes, 4 fours) whilst Pratiq made 17.

Texas Tech never were out of the game, tough as the task was, and made 141. Raghav opened and made 37 (4 fours), Niihal Shah 27.

So Carnegie Mellon had returned to the sidefields of the Central Broward Regional Park, where it all started back in 2009.

Texas A & M vs Penn State

The Aggies won the toss and sent Penn state in to bat. Currently ranked at # 1, Texas A & M was eager to continue their unbeaten streak in American College Cricket.

However they were withut their top fast bowler Ockert Greyvenstein. Nevertheless, the Penn State batting struggled and made 83. Wasif took 3 wickets for 4 runs in 3 overs. Sudhakar 2 wickets for 19 in 4 overs.

A good opening partnership by Texas A & M openers, captain Hamza 23 (2 fours) and Anurag 32 (3 fours) set up the win for the Aggies. Left hander Anurag had been their top opener at the South West regional. Venkatesh 22 (2 fours & 1 six) took Texas A & M home for the win.

AUBURN UNIVERSTY vs U of HOUSTON CLEARLAKE

2010 South East Champion Auburn were restricted to 106 for 8 wickets against UHCL. Pramod topscoring with 30 (2 fours) whilst captain Naveen Thiaragrajan made 21 (2 fours). Varun ended on 20* (1 six).

Despite losing 2 of their top bowlers to graduation, Rahul Potghan and Ahmed Faraz, Auburn held the Clearlake batsmen and it took a captain’s knock by Prashant Manne of 57* (6 fours & 2 sixes) to get an excitingly close win for Houston Clearlake Blue Herons.

The win came after 19.3 overs.

Ohio State Buckeyes Cricket new Champ in the Big 10, win Gordon Gee Trophy !

2010 winner of the Gordon Gee Trophy Purdue, fresh from their win over Indiana University, came into the American College Cricket Midwest Championship with a formidable record as the top cricket club in the Big 10.

In contrast, the new team from University of Buffalo was inexperienced, and happy to particpate in their first tournament. Both Purdue and Buffalo got off to a bad start: the Boilermakers lost to Carnegie Mellon whilst Buffalo were defeated by Cleveland State, Ishaan Bhatt took 3 wickets for 7 runs and Pavan 2 for 12 for the CSU Vikings.

The Carnegie Mellon Cricket club, hurriedly pulled together by Atishe Chordia working with Lloyd Jodah in 2009, was one of the original five teams that showed up in Ft Lauderdale Florida in March 2009, and showed a new path for cricket in America. They were part of some key innovations that spring for cricket in America and Canada.

The American College Cricket Spring Break Championship was the first “season ball” college cricket tournament in the USA, and the first national championship for colleges.

Three games were scheduled per day – another first which later rendered the 47 game 2010 Championship and the 67 game 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship possible.

The New York Times did a huge 2 page story in the Sports Section on the revolutionary 2009 event – the first time the nation’s top paper had covered domestic cricket in modern times.

Autumn and rain had set in and the weather was tough on the cricket players on Saturday, but not even wet 50-something degrees weather would stop the cricket. Two games were reduced to 12 overs and batting was tough all weekend.

Carnegie Mellon then took on Penn State and defeated the Nittany Lions behind a 50 by Mudit. The OSU Buckeyes gave the inexperienced Buffalo team their second loss, as Anupam Vivek took 3 wickets for 8 runs,and Anoop 2 for 3. Nakul made 19.

Penn State then knocked 2010 Big 10 Champion Purdue out of the tournament, but Ohio State’s win over Cleveland State earned Ohio State a place in the Finals against Carnegie Mellon University.

However the bowling of the Buckeyes, particularly last year’s Big 10 MVP Romel Somavat, overwhelmed the CMU guys and routed them for 28 runs. Somavat took 3 wickets to add to his 50 scored in an earlier game to earn the Midwest Championship MVP honors again ! Somavat was also one of 5 American College Cricket players of 2010 and a 2-time All American in cricket.

Ohio State easily chased the runs down to win the Gordon Gee Trophy !

The American College Cricket Midwest Championship for the second time bought exciting collegiate cricket to the Ohio State campus, and Columbus. The OSU Cricket Club, led by its President & Phd candidate Anupam Vivek continued their key role in American College Cricket by being great hosts and organizers.

It’s autumn, the leaves are evolving into dazzling hues, the winds blow a bit chilly and in the Heartland of America college cricket teams take the field to battle !

The old custom of cricket sweaters, which originated in the English weather, achieve a new relevance in American College Cricket season – only now it may be hoodies !

It may be in the 50′s some days, but the 50′s the batsman is focused on is his own half century of runs !

Saturday, Oct 1st, gameday, there will be matches in Ohio and Iowa, with many Big 10 colleges competing - with national rankings, and 2 Championships, the Midwest and Great Plains, at stake !

The Buckeyes open their campaign against newcomer University of Buffalo, hoping to keep the Gordon Gee Trophy at Ohio State. Defending Champion Purdue want to win here to regain their top 10 ranking – which they lost after not making it to the nationals.

American College Cricket pioneer school Carnegie Mellon has a tough schedule taking on Purdue and Penn State. The Nittany Lions have some new blood eager to take the Gordon Gee Trophy back to Paterno country – Joe Paterno has been coaching there so long he might actually have been around when Philadelphia had one of the strongest cricket teams in the world (in the 1880′s & 18890′s).

New team Iowa State, will face the Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Gophers. The Gophers have been getting stronger each since beginning in 2010.

The guys from Buffalo, and Iowa State are dark horses, whilst University of Iowa showed flashes of strength at the 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship.

Cleveland State Vikings had their first tournament at the nationals, and have been practising hard since for this regional.

Ohio State University President Gordon Gee (who is also a member of the American College Cricket Advisory Board) is expected to attend the finals on Sunday.

Midwest Championship for Gordon Gee Trophy – Colleges confirmed & Schedule set !

Last year Ohio State University President E Gordon Gee did us the honor of attending the American College Cricket Midwest Championship involving many Big 10 schools.

Purdue University took away the Gordon Gee Trophy,after an exciting Finals vs the OSU Buckeyes. No doubt Ohio State would like revenge against the Boilermakers.

Purdue University and Indiana University Cricket will, the week before on Sept 24,at the invitation of the Mayor of Indianapolis Greg Ballard, open a new cricket field in Indiananapolis.

This year the Midwest Championship has been split, to create the Great Plains Championship and avoid the teams from farther west having to travel too far. In addition the Great Plains Championship will highlight the on campus cricket field of the University of Iowa, earned through the hard work of Anup Gandhi and the Hawkeyes Cricket Club.

Penn State has taken its place competing against other Big 10 colleges, whilst new team University of Buffalo will make its first American College Cricket appearance.

Since the nationals will be restricted to 32 teams, teams will be motivated to earn as many points as possible to ensure they qualify for next March’s American College Cricket Spring Break Championship.

Once again the guys of Buckeyes cricket, this time headed by Anupam Vivek, are hosting the Midwest Championship, as they did superbly, for American College Cricket’s first regional last year.

Last year USU’s Romel Somavat earned Championship MVP on the field, even as he played a tremendous role in organising the tournament.

Cleveland State U Vikings CC is school’s Club of the Month !

Cleveland State University honored their Vikings Cricket Club as Club of the Month, for their particpation in the 2011 American College Cricket Championship. The CSU Recreational Center Newsletter said:

This month we would like to recognize the Cricket Club. The Cleveland State Vikings Cricket Club was reactivated in 2009 when President Jagjitan Gill took over (and got in touch with Lloyd Jodah,founder and President of American College Cricket). The Club has been going strong ever since.

The Club recently got back from the American College Cricket National Championship in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. 12 members attended the tournament, where the team feels they played well. But like any team Sadiq Khan feels “the more we play with each other, the better we are going to get.”

The cricket club knows that particpation in a tournament of this magnitude will definitely boost club exposure and particpation.Not only did they get to compete and have fun, but “during this trip we got to meet some really good cricketers as well as coaches,” Khan said.

The club hosted their first tennis ball tournament last summer and are looking to execute a bigger and better one this summer.

Also in the future for the cricket club is the upcoming American College Cricket Midwest Championship in September.

Congrats to Jagjitan Gill, Sadiq Khan, Ishaan Bhatt and the rest of the cricket club for being recognized as this month’s Club of the Month !

Our Experience – Cleveland State University Vikings Cricket !

Mr.Jodah & Mr.Diloreto,
On behalf of Vikings cricket club we would like to thank both of you for hosting a tremendous tournament. The atmosphere and the build up to the tourney was simply amazing and exciting.

Upon our arrival having a practice session on the side field and working with coach Amir Siddique gave us lots of insides in regards to fielding and other aspects of cricket. We truly think that this was by far the most memorable trip we had playing cricket.

We believe that this tournament will enable us to not build our cricket but also our character as individuals. Both of you have been very helpful in answering all the questions and helped us in every step of the way.

We all are telling our family and friends about the amazing experience we had. We are working with our college of promoting our experience on the website so we can get a better team and more students involved. Lastly we cannot wait to be a part of this wonderful journey of cricket which was started by you guys and hope this would only get bigger.

We would be more than happy to help/assist you guys developing the game in Midwest area. Again thank you for having us in this wonderful tournament.

The teams for the following 4 Colleges have been named, to viie for the Chanderpaul Trophy at the 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship.

The USF Bulls return, after making the Finals in 2009 and the final four in 2010 – they’d like to stampede to the Finals and win it all this year. Last year they gave eventual Champions York University a strong fight, but dropped some crucial catches. They are led again by Harsha Boddepalli.

Sai Ramesh was last year’s Championship MVP, playing for USF, but he transfered to UCF. Together with Lloyd Jodah, Ramesh started a team at UCF which showedd its strenght at last Fall’s Southeast Championship. The UCF Knights will be a force to reckon with, and like the other Florida teams have a lot of experience playing on the Stadium pitches recently courteesy of BIG League USA.

Cleveland State University is new to the season ball as team but is another example of a team that has come together inspired by American College Cricket. Under Club President Jagjitan Singh Gill and encouraged by Jodah they hosted their first tapeball tournament last year and began preparing for the 2011 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship.

The team from the Big 12, University of Iowa has come far fast. Started just over a year ago, the cricket club has already been granted a cricket field by the school ! Under the leadership of Anup Gandhi they then participated in the Midwest Championship and now have their Hawkeyes set on the national Championship !

Facilities-wise American College Cricket would like the example of the Iowa Hawkeyes cricket club to inspire other teams to work towards getting cricket pitches and fields.

Cleveland State U Vikings join American College Cricket, has tournament

These are the pictures of the first ever cricket tournament in Cleveland State University. The tapeball tournament was a knockout format, and had 6 teams.

There were some brilliant perfomances by each teams which made the tournament exciting. We would like to thank Jagjitan Singh Gill, President of the Viking Cricket Club (of Cleveland State U) to have organized a tournament for all cricket lovers at Cleveland State University and to have provided a vision for all cricket fans.

We also thank American College Cricket who supported the club and encouraged it.

The final match of the tournament was played between Knight Riders and Elite 8. Knight Riders won, and finished as the champions of the first ever twenty20 tournament at Cleveland State U, by 9 runs.
