Well, thanks to the work of Boston University Cricket Club President Hayat Khan students at BU can now get credit for learning & playing cricket !

Some months ago Hayat began the process of motivating the relevant college administrators to start such a class. He discussed the idea with American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah, who gave Hayat a syllabus,& some suggestions. Nadir Budhwani, Phd had pioneered such a course in 2005 at the University of Minnesota, which was continued by Charles Peterson.

In between doing his college work & exams, playing in the American College Cricket Regionals ( BU’s first match on TV), & getting the team ready for the Nationals, Hayat made a film & did the requisite presentations to get the course approved, then called Lloyd with the great news !

Here’s Hayat’s description of the class:

The class is called PDP GS 150 (GS for general sports). It’s a 1 credit class and it meets in the FitRec which is the Fitness and Recreation Center (the gym). It will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 am to 11 am. BU student Hayat Khan will be the instructor for the class.

Beginning-level course on the history and rules of cricket. Basic skills will be explored with an emphasis on mastering batting, bowling and fielding techniques. By the end of class, students should be familiar with the fundamentals of cricket and be able to participate in practice games. Equipment will be provided.

Hayat at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011, teaching a boy how to hold a bat.

This class comes soon after BU put an exciting moving cricket graphic as their banner on the University Homepage !

A true American cricketer, Hayat Khan is the BU Cricket Club President & Captain, & has played in a number of American College Cricket National & Regional Championships. As a high school student he played in the PSAL and the NYPD youth cricket leagues, & one of the reasons he selected Boston University for college, was because he read about BU’s American College Cricket team.

The Boston University CC under then President Sumantro Das, & Captain Shilpin Makwana is one of the 5 pioneering pillars of American College Cricket that played the first Championship in 2009 and has played every tournament since. It was given the honor of being the first college team (vs Rutgers) to play at the CBRP Cricket Stadium (in 2010).

It’s difficult to pick a Club of the Year – all of our Clubs that make it to the Nationals, especially those from outside of Florida, do a lot of work to get there. But we can’t pat ourselves on the back for accomplishing the minimum – we have to do a lot more.

Use of Social media is extremely important for organisations, causes, businesses and since late 2008 we have been urging our members to learn to use Facebook to promote our cause. Some of you are doing a great job ! Here are the Top Clubs on Facebook (mostly powered by the students named) :

University at Buffalo - Ashaab Alam, Parth Parikh

Texas Tech - Amit & Vishnu Chaudhary, Arjun Tuli

York College - Mohammad Suleman

Embry Riddle – Harsh Gothwal, Jerin Chacko

Florida International - Sagar & Santhosh Reddy

College of Wooster - Naman Jain

                                                                                           TOP CLUBS (Overall) 2012

Boston University :

One of the 5 pioneering clubs that played in the first American College Cricket Spring Break Championship, BU has played in every national Championship and regionals, getting to the Semis this year & playing on TV Asia. Original players like Shilpin Makwana, & Ankush Chandra remain active in the club with new strong leadership like Hayat Khan.

This year the club got an article, & produced a superb video, featured in BU media. But the masterpiece was the moving headline Banner, featuring the BU cricketers in action, on the Homepage of Boston University – it not only gave American College Cricket tremendous visibility among non-cricketers but was an exciting banner by itself !

Club President Hayat Khan, with American College Cricket assistance, is working on getting cricket taught as a credit course – a tremendous development if approved !

As we originally intended in 2009, BU helped the development in 2012, of new clubs at Harvard and Northeastern, including playing of practice matches.

Penn State University :

The club has the distinction of having a qualified Coach, on the Penn State staff, who travels with the team. This marks a huge step for American College Cricket which we hope to be emulated in other colleges. The club has also been given good access to practice facilities similar to other club sports at Penn State. Coach David Chakravorty (from Australia) also provided excellent ball by ball TV commentary for the Finals in March.

Once again, as they did in 2011, Penn State traveled to, and played in 2 regionals: this time the Mid West & Mid Atlantic, such is their enthusiasm for American College Cricket. A young team, they just missed making the Semis in the Mid Atlantic.

In April, Penn State University gave the club won the Most Improved Club Award to the Cricket Club.and the leadership of Haris Mohiuddin.

Texas A & M University

The Aggies started the year by largely organizing the first South West regional in Jan, on their own new cricket field – and hosted 4 other college teams: West Texas A & M, Texas Tech, UH Cougars and UH Clearlake with American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah.

Texas A & M won the South West Championship in convincing fashion , and continued their unbeaten streak in American College Cricket, earning them a # 1 National ranking !

At the Nationals they finally were overcome by eventual Champions York College in the final four, after going unbeaten for 11 matches. But the manner in which they conducted themselves won them the “Spirit of Cricket” Award.

In the Fall they had their annual internal tournament and ended the year by marshalling hundreds of votes on Facebook for their left handed strokeplayer Anurag Verma as a College Player of the Year !

Texas Tech University

Throughout the year, the club has been vibrant, and engaged in activites that elevate its profile like : Fed Day (where it competed against other Tech clubs in Flag Tag, Dodge Ball, Tug o War etc & was asked, “Where did you get Coca Cola as a sponsor ?”) and Sports Club Publicity Day. The club also featured in a photo shoot.

Many members of Texas Tech Raiders Cricket Club, particularly Amit & Vishu Chaudhary, Arjun Tuli and alum Baiju Shah, regularly share AmericanCollegeCricket.com stories on their personal Facebook profiles, doing their part in helping to build our fanbase.

Texas Tech took 2 trips to the South West regional in College Station, and to the Nationals in Ft Lauderdale and have been practicing regularly for the upcoming American College Cricket Spring Break Championship in March. Though far from other Texan teams the club is eager to host a regional.

With its own cricket field Texas Tech is a shining example in our goal to develop infrastructure. However construction may happen on the site,so the Cricket Club has begun to look at what is neccessary to ensure another, hopefully even better field, is acquired.

More than any other club, the graduates of the Raider Cricket Club who have moved to different places, have remained supportive in financial & other ways. We hope this example will be emulated by alumni of all our clubs.

University of South Florida ;

Another of our pioneering 5 clubs from 2009 USF has been the most consistent club on the field and this year they were Finalists in the Nationals again, & the South East regionals. Their Facebook cover highlights American College Cricket, TV Asia & Coca Cola.

USF has been using the CRICHQ app for all their matches (thanks to Satish Hanumanthu) and this has ensured the performances of their top players like 2012 College Player of the Year Abdullah Sheikh, 2012 Nationals MVP Sai Ramesh & centurion Krunal Bhange, got the recognition they deserved, & are recorded for posterity.

For the 2nd year USF held a large tape ball tournament, where they applied lessons learnt from American College Cricket for Facebook promotion, and webstreaming for their draft they wore formal wear).

However, bafflingly they have not received any coverage by their USF media (to our knowledge) in the past 4 years – the only one of our major clubs to not get this recognition. We hope this is changed soon.

————————————————————————————

An autumn day that was surprisingly gorgeous for cricket saw the Boston University vs Rutgers rivalry heat up the TV Asia screens all over America and Canada !

Sharp directing, nifty camera work & close ups brought the viewers into the game and showed the intensity on the faces of the college players.

The interplay between the New Zealand voice of CricHQ’s Jamie Paul Lloyd & American College Cricket’s Lloyd Jodah provided a knowledgeable backdrop for the excitement as Coca Cola and TV Asia brought the 7th match of the college cricket season into living rooms.

BU’s Hayat Khan won the toss, & chose to field. For Rutgers Nisarg Choksi & Haider Ali opened the batting and put up another fifty partnership, which they’ve been doing since Nationals in March. They made 63 in 5.4 overs before Choksi was bowled by Hayat Khan for 9. Those numbers tell the tale of how Haider Ali tore into the bowling, smashing 6′s way out of the field. His cover drives for 6′s traveled about 90 meters, and were truly remarkable ! Ali’s 50 came in 21 balls !

A century partnership (102) followed with A Trapasia (25) as Haider dominated the bowling with shots all around the wicket, finding the gaps, and launching the ball over the boundary. Haider’s 100 came off 39 balls, with 11 sixes & 9 fours ! When he was out, he had made 119 in 47 balls out of his team’s 165 for 3 !

For cricket in America & Canada, 22 year old Rutgers student Haider Ali had set a record, he had scored a century on his debut on TV ! and he made the first century ever scored on TV in the US and Canada ! Frieda Pinto would have loved it, had she been there to see it.

Nevertheless one of the best shots of the match was Divyesh Gandhi’s cut off the back foot for 6 – it bulleted like a rocket way outside the boundary ! Rutgers made 210 for 6 in 20 overs and left Boston U a tough task.

Tejas Ajawane and Hayat Khan got BU off to a good start at 22 off 2.5 overs before Udit Patel struck, getting Khan, then taking 2 more quick wickets and Boston was 33 for 3 ! Shilpin Makwana, who captained BU in the first American College Cricket National Championship in 2009, joined Ajawane, and the 2 put on 59 runs before Makwana went caught off Gandhi, for 31 in 31 balls.

Ajawane continued the fight before getting out at 135 for 6, for 66 made off 44 balls with 4 fours & 4 sixes !

Boston University showed their grit by getting to 152 for 7 off 20, but Rutgers had amassed too large a total, and earned the victory to go through to the American College Cricket North East Finals once more to play for the Deryck Jodah Trophy !

It took a tremendous amount of work by students like Boston University’s Sumantro Das to ensure the historic first Championship took place in March 2009. As Sumantro tells it, the BUCC (a social club at the time) spent hours debating what this new thing was, and if it was credible enough to atend.

Fortunately Boston University Cricket Club did, along with 4 other newly created teams and a new era for college sports in the USA & Canada, and for world cricket, began.

Boston University has been a part of every American College Cricket National and regional Championship since, under Shilpin Makwana, Ankush Chandra and now Club President Shayaan Mehdi, and Captain Nafa Veqar. They were rewarded by being the first College team (with Rutgers) to play in the CBRP Stadiium.

Beyond the game, American College Cricket represents the first representation of the previously unused, and unnoticed, influence and power, economic and otherwise, of students of a cricket background (Indian, desi generally, and others) in USA and Canadian Universities.

Boston University Cricket Club is one of our pioneers, and pillars, demonstrating a continuity and commitment that is exemplary.

Increasingly, when picking a University many top students are looking for colleges with cricket teams. American College Cricket has made that an option in the past 2 1/2 years, by motivating the organization of formal clubs in schools where none existed before.

The American College Cricket National & Regional Championships give these schools high profiles in key demographics for students’ recruitment. To our knowledge, in 2011 alone at least 4 of our teams’ college Presidents have made students recruiting trips to India - now those schools have a valuable tool in their cricket team.

The team is eager to make an impact in the nationals, and go further than their cross town rivals the USF Bulls. The team has had valuable playing time on the Stadium pitches in recent months, and will feel at home.

The guys at University of Maryland Baltimore County return with a very strong record. Apart from reaching the Semi Finals of last year’s American College Cricket Championship, UMBC also won the WMCB league T20 tournament in Maryland, and performed well in the local 40 overs league as well. Stars like Raghav Bharadwarj and Eraj Abidi, under Sumeet Chordiya’s captaincy and Anand Patel’s Club Presidency, give UMBC a good chance at taking the Chanderpaul Trophy back to its original home state of Maryland.

Pioneering Boston University Cricket Club is a cornerstone of American College Cricket and in 2010 they were given the honor of playing the first college cricket match at the Cricket Stadium. In recognition of their role in bringing positive attention to their school, the team has received very generous funding from their administration. The team’s President and Captain is Ankush Chandra, and includes talented Hayat Khan, who is representative of a new breed of American cricket player, having played in the NYC high school (PSAL) and the NYPD United Cricket Leagues.

USC Trojans took the West Coast Championship, with a top score of 95 from Harsh Sowani and good batting by Duhyant Sharma.Tarun Sandhu, their Vice captain & Club President is also a 6’6 fast bowler, whose fluid runup and height can cause some nightmares for batsmen. The Trojans and Thunderbird School of Global Management will get the chance to renew their rivalry, as both teams are in the same group.

Hayat Khan played cricket fro Midwood High in the PSAL, New York City’s Public High schools cricket league, and the NYPD United Cricket League. Now a College Freshman its no accident Hayat chose Boston University, which is one of the 5 pioneering Colleges of American College Cricket, beginning in March 2009 – his Advisor suggested, because of his love of playing cricket, he should look at Universities which would fulfill his academic needs, as well as having a cricket team.

Azrab Cheema is a tall College Freshman at NYU-Polytechnic but he is only 16 years old !
Also remarkable about Azrab is the fact that he played in the NYC High School (PSAL) Cricket league for William Grady High School and the NYPD Cricket league (for young men ages 15 to 19). When selecting Universities one of the reasons Cheema chose NYU-Poly was because of its cricket team, which particpated in last March’s American College Cricket Spring Break Championship.

NYC PSAL Cricket Bassett Thompson and NYPD Cricket’s Jeff Thompson (no relation) as well as Poilice Commssioner Ray Kelly can all feel proud.
