Can Gators retain South East Title ? Semis & Finals on TV in US & Canada !

: USF Bulls – 2009 & 2012 Nationals Finalist

The team from Auburn University Cricket Club drove 14 hours to win the first South East Championship of American College Cricket in Nov 2010, by defeating SEC rivals the University of Florida Gators at the CBRP Cricket Stadium in Ft Lauderdale.

In October 2010 the Gator Cricket Club had finally been motivated by American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah to begin a hard ball team, and prepare for competitive cricket. American College Cricket helped equip the club with uniforms and equipment. Being part of the national organization elevated the profile of the club immensely.

The Auburn Tigers blanketed the Stadium’s pristine outfield with their passion and teamwork, to earn the South East title, to follow their final 4 finish in the March National Championship.

November 2011, the tables were turned as University of Florida defeated Auburn in another hard fought South East Finals ! This year however it could be Roll Tide time as the boys at the University of Alabama get ready for their first American College Cricket tournament !

One of the founding pillars, the University of South Florida Bulls has been the most consistently high performing club in American College Cricket Nationals : in 2009 they were a Finalist, in 2010 a final four, 2011 undefeated & missing the final 4 on points,and in 2012 a Finalist ! Will this be the tournament they get a hard-earned title ?

: Auburn University Cricket Captain Naveenan Thiagajaran

“It was a one of a kind experience !” the usually cool Naveenan Thiagajaran said.

“We went up in the plane on two days, and I spent a total of 1600 seconds in zero-gravity. It was the next best thing to actually being in space. Wearing the NASA uniform was really cool , like wearing the Auburn Cricket uniform !”

When asked what he thought would be the efffect of Zero Gravity on a cricket bowler, Naveen laughed and said, “The ball would never hit the ground, it would be kind of like a Shoiab Akhtar beamer lol !”

What about a batsman hitting a six ? “That would never come down, it would be like an Afridi or Chris Gayle 6 !”

Naveenan Thiagajaran, Captain of the Auburn University Cricket Club, and a 2011 American College Cricket Player of the Year was chosen for the flight together with Sushil Bhavnani, Auburn faculty member and Auburn undergrad Travis Wheeler.

Naveenan Thiagajaran, Captain of the Auburn University Cricket Club, and a 2011 American College Cricket Player of the Year has been chosen to fly on NASA’s Zero-G reduced-gravity aircraft ! Naveen will fly out of NASA’s Lynden B. Johnson Space Center in Houston on May 3.

As Morgan Stashick explained in the Auburn University Samuel Ginn College of Engineering media :

Sushil Bhavnani, faculty member in Auburn University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, doctoral candidate Naveenan Thiagarajan and undergraduate student Travis Wheeler have been chosen to fly on NASA’s Zero-G reduced gravity aircraft, affectionately known as the “Vomit Comet.” The team’s project, “Fluid Lateral Motion using Surface Microstructures-Channel Flow from a Large Array,” was selected for the flight to study the effects of microgravity on boiling.

Thiagajaran, who began the project three years ago whilst completing his Master’s, told Morgan, “I am thrilled to be a part of this experience, this project is a significant part of my dissertation, and is a story that I will be proud to tell my grandchildren.”

We haven’t spoken with them, but we’re sure that Naveen’s parents are thrilled at the prospect of grandchildren and great-grands.

An excellent cricket captain and Club President, Naveen led the Auburn Tigers to the final four at the nationals in March 2011, after Auburn defeated University of Florida for the South East regional title in Nov 2010. Losing a number of key players to graduation, Auburn did not fare as well at the 2012 American College Cricket Nationals.

As a batsman, he has given Auburn solid starts as an opener. In 2011 (at the South East regional & the American College Cricket Spring Break Championship) he made three fifties, 56*,59 & 50 . Two of which came against SEC rivals the Gators.

No doubt after his stint in zero gravity Thiagajaran will bring new perspectives to cricket’s eternal debates about a cricket ball’s “flight” and “reverse swing”.

GWU vs Cleveland,Carnegie vs Texas Tech,Texas A & M vs Penn State,Auburn vs UH Clearlake ! Nationals Day 1!

George Washington University vs Cleveland State U

It was a hard fought game, GWU batted first and opener Vivek Hadkar 31 (3 fours) got them to a good start. Coming at # 5 Ashutosh blasted 48 (4 fours & 3 sixes) to take them to 141 in 20 overs.

Bowling for Cleveland State Pawan took 3 early wickets for 27 runs, but Ashutosh powered GWU’s recovery.

Cleveland State struggled, with only Abhilash of the early batsmen hitting 24 (3 fours) until Dhaval came to the rescue, smashing 6 fours & 2 sixes in a fantastic 53*. He hit the ball in the gaps to take over the game and win it for Cleveland State.

Carnegie Mellon vs Texas Tech

One of the first teams in American College Cricket, Carnegie Mellon returned to their 2nd American College Cricket National Cahmpionship. Two players, freshmen in 2009, returned as seniors, Sahil Jolly and Aayush.

Carnegie batted first, and put up a good total of 159 for 7. Naveen hit 53 (4 sixes, 4 fours) whilst Pratiq made 17.

Texas Tech never were out of the game, tough as the task was, and made 141. Raghav opened and made 37 (4 fours), Niihal Shah 27.

So Carnegie Mellon had returned to the sidefields of the Central Broward Regional Park, where it all started back in 2009.

Texas A & M vs Penn State

The Aggies won the toss and sent Penn state in to bat. Currently ranked at # 1, Texas A & M was eager to continue their unbeaten streak in American College Cricket.

However they were withut their top fast bowler Ockert Greyvenstein. Nevertheless, the Penn State batting struggled and made 83. Wasif took 3 wickets for 4 runs in 3 overs. Sudhakar 2 wickets for 19 in 4 overs.

A good opening partnership by Texas A & M openers, captain Hamza 23 (2 fours) and Anurag 32 (3 fours) set up the win for the Aggies. Left hander Anurag had been their top opener at the South West regional. Venkatesh 22 (2 fours & 1 six) took Texas A & M home for the win.

AUBURN UNIVERSTY vs U of HOUSTON CLEARLAKE

2010 South East Champion Auburn were restricted to 106 for 8 wickets against UHCL. Pramod topscoring with 30 (2 fours) whilst captain Naveen Thiaragrajan made 21 (2 fours). Varun ended on 20* (1 six).

Despite losing 2 of their top bowlers to graduation, Rahul Potghan and Ahmed Faraz, Auburn held the Clearlake batsmen and it took a captain’s knock by Prashant Manne of 57* (6 fours & 2 sixes) to get an excitingly close win for Houston Clearlake Blue Herons.

The win came after 19.3 overs.

: Naveen Thiagarajan (Auburn),a 2011 College Player of the Year

Five College Cricket Players of the Year 2011 will be declared, in no special order. Selection criteria includes off the field and on the field performances.

Naveen Thiagajaran has now led the Auburn University Tigers 4 times to Florida to compete in 2 South East regionals and 2 national American College Cricket Championships, beginning March 2010. Three times the team has driven 14 hours to Ft Lauderdale to play, this South East regional being the first time they’ve been able to afford flying.

The Tigers impress with their great team efforts, in bowling and batting. Their top batsman has been 2 time All American Prasanna Ravishankar,but a number of other players like All American Rahul Potghan, Vibudh Misra, Ahmed Faraz, Sakthi Kandasammy,Prashant Dubey have contributed greatly.

An excellent captain,with an ever ready smile,Naveen led the Tigers to the final four at the nationals in March 2011. As a batsman, he has given Auburn solid starts as an opener. In 6 innings in 2011 (at the South East regional & the American College Cricket Spring Break Championship) he made three fifties, 56*,59 & 50 .He also made 2 other good scores of 25 and 20 (when he featured in a partnership of 93 runs).

Against SEC rivals, the Gators Naveen led Auburn to the South East title in 2010, and his 50 in the 2011 Finals almost took the Tigers to victory, but after he was out, UF was able to win by 16 runs. Naveen seems to save his best for rivals Gators, with 56* and 50 in his 2 games vs them.

In a team of good bowlers, Thiagarajan also bowls the occasional tight spells, and took a couple of wickets.

Since 2009 the Auburn guys have held a tapeball tournament, the Tiger Cup under floodlights. In 2011 it included the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, Mississippi State University, University of Memphis, and Jackson State University. As Auburn Cricket Club President Naveen played a large role, along with Vice President Rahul Potghan, in organising the tournament.

In 2010 just prior to their first American College Cricket Championship the club was urged to become a formal club to represent Auburn University. Their American College Cricket accomplishments have since earned more support from the school, and recently they were able to buy new uniforms and equipment.

In a bunch of disciplined and helpful students dedicated to American College Cricket, a number of players on the Auburn Cricket team could be contenders for Player of the Year and Club President and Captain Naveen is a perfect representative as a 2011 an American College Cricket Player of the Year.

Thiagarajan expects to graduate with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2012.

UF Gators defeat Auburn Tigers to be SE Champs !

: UF Gators – 2011 American College Cricket South East Conference Champs

It was the Fall Semester in 2010, and, after 1 and a half years of work, I finally was able to motivate the (new) executive of the Gators Cricket Club to begin playing with the “season ball”. Uncertainly they agreed, and said they would be ready for the 2012 Championship ( another year & a half later !).

But I challenged them to participate in the 2010 Southeast regionals and they did, led by Club President Krishnaro Dase !

American College Cricket assisted the Club in getting equipment. With very little practice, they played well and, resplendent in uniforms, reached the Finals where they put up a fight before losing to Auburn !

The Auburn club, led by Rahul Potghan and Naveen Thiagarajan, had itself become official for the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship, when the Auburn admin conferred official status on the club, because it was about to play in the national championship. Now after 3 roadtrips to Ft Lauderdale, the Auburn team was finally able to buy new uniforms and fly !

Now its Nov 2011, and on the beautiful cricket fields of Ft Lauderdale, Auburn and UF do battle again !

The University of Florida Gators batted first, Vijay Pappu and Hassan Baber opening the batting. The Tigers’ bowlers were not effective, and Pappu and Baber put on 40 runs before Baber was caught off Vibudh for 24 ( 1 four,3 sixes).

However, in walked the dangerous Ricky Nayer who, in 2010, had made a magnificent 64 to almost win the title for UF ! After 15 overs it was 95 for 1, as the Auburn bowlers,especially Vibudh & Vijith kept the pressure on.

Then Nayar turned it on, and brought up his 50 with a six, followed by another. His 58* (455 balls) included 4 fours & 3 sixes, whilst Pappu was run out at the end for 49 (3 four & 1 six in 60 balls).

Nayar & Pappu put on 97 and the UF Gators reached a good total of 149 for in 20. Vibudh finished with 4 overs for 18 runs & 1 wicket, and Vijith 3 overs for 17.

Needing a run rate of 7.5 to win Auburn’s openers, captain Naveen Thiagarajan and Prassana, both in form, Naveen having struck 59 vs FAU, and Prassana 64 ( 7 fours & 4 sixes) vs USF.

Auburn was going along steadily before Anuj, who took 3 wickets for 2 runs vs USF, struck for UF getting Prassana caught for 13, and Auburn was 43 for 1 in the 7 th over.

After 10 Auburn was in a great poition on 70 for 1, with Naveen and Shakti going strong. Some great fielding slowed the scoring rate and led to 2 quick run outs, Shakti for 28 ( 2 fours 1 six, 20 balls) and Faraz for 0, making Auburn 102 for 3 after 15.( Gators were 95 for 1 after 15).

Aditya Kasi then took the prize wicket of Thiagarajan for 50 ( 50 balls, 8 fours) and Auburn was now 110 for 4 after 17 . Syam and Vibudh tried to go after the bowlers but eventually the Gators, led by Vijay Pappu got the win by 16 runs !

In the tournament Auburn captain Naveen Thiagarajan made 2 half centuries, 59 and 50 plus featured in a 93 run partnership, of which he made 19. Prassana made a 64, but Championship MVP was definitely Gators’ Ricky Nayar- 2 game winning innings of 25* and 58* and bowling of 2 for 10, and 3 for 15 plus his wicketkeeping !

With this win of the South East Conference Championship the Gators Cricket Club will soar in the rankings, and now can now utilise this victory to motivate the University of Florida to provide a cricket field – which would greatly help the club bring a national title to UF !

University of Florida (USF) vs Florida Atlantic University (FAU) .

USF and FAU played a game that had implications for national ranking.

For FAU Stefan Babulal smashed 76 (8 fours 3 sixes)- Babulal is the name the legendary Rohan Kanhai, one of the world’s greatest batsman ever, was known by !

Lakitosh contributed 32 (3 fours & 1 six), as FAU made 129 for 6 in their 20 overs. Arjun took 2 wickets for 20 in 3, and Prashant Pal 1 for 14 in 4 overs.

For USF, Anshul’s 46* ( 6 fours 1 six), Viral 33 (3 fours 2 sixes) & opener Abhay (2 fours 1 six) gave USF the victory – 130 for 5 in 17.4 overs.

The groundbreaking televising of cricket in USA & Canada continues this Saturday Nov 12, at 7 pm on TV Asia, with the Finals of the American College Cricket Northeast Championship !

Frrom 10 teams we have the Final two : NYU – Polytechnic featuring America’s fastest bowler, Adrian Gordon, vs Toronto’s Ryerson University, featuring 4 pacers !

Gordon has made possibly the highest score in a 20/20 game in America – he scored 145* at last March’s national Championship, whilst Chintan Modi looked in great form in the semis vs Rutgers.

However Ryerson has 4 pacers over 6 feet tall, including Warren Rajroop at 6’5′ and Rayan Pathan at 6’4′ ,capable of generating great bounce. Then there is the effective medium pacer Harsh Desai.

At the Central Broward Regional Park, the American College Cricket Southeast Championship begins Sat with Auburn University defending its SE title. Last year the newly formed University of Florida Gators team put up a strong fight in the Finals, spearheaded by a magnificent innings by Ricky Nayar.

But the Auburn Tigers led by Naveen Thiagarajan and Rahul Potghan,has played as one of the most tightly knit teams in college cricket and were crowned the SE Champs.

The Gators Cricket Club have also gone on to start an Alumni Network to support their cricket club. They have won 9 of 11 “practice games” played this semester in preparation for the regionals said Vijay Pappu.

The University of South Florida (USF) Bulls under Sri Harsh Boddepalli, have been consistently strong since they were started for the first National Championship (2009 ). They were in a Finalist in 2009, a Final Four in 2010, & played undefeated in 2011, narrowly missing the final four on points.

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) led by Ranjit feel they are ready to become the top team in the Southeast.However USF’s Nagesh Nayak says, “Even the Indian team doesn’t practice as much as USF does.”
