All of our Clubs have now had their<a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Embry.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-10170" title="Embry" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Embry-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a> college media cover them. Some of you have been interviewed by TV Asia, NY Times, Washington Post etc. Practically all clubs will have tables, or presentations in the next week or two, to meet and attract new members.</span></p>
<div> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Here are a few suggestions for your &#8220;Club Sports&#8221;, &#8220;ClubFests&#8221; or &#8220;Orientation&#8221; Day; or when doing interviews by the media, &amp; other interactions with the public about cricket and your club.</span></div>
<div> </div>
<div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Make the table exciting and interactive  </span></div>
<div> </div>
<div>1. if possible show videos of exciting fast bowlers like Shoiab Aktar, Brett Lee etc&#8230;and American College Cricket videos (many are on Youtube)</div>
<div> </div>
<div>2 -Explain briefly the <strong>tough aspects</strong> of the game, to get the interest of the serious competitors&#8230;&#8230;&amp; also explain &#8220;<strong>just for</strong> <strong>fun&#8221;</strong> cricket</div>
<div> </div>
<div>3 -Have the new people &#8220;Like&#8221; AmericanCollegeCricket.com on Facebook immediately on their phones &#8211; they will then be connected to your club, &amp; us</div>
<div> </div>
<div> 4- <strong>wear/demonstrate</strong> the protective gear&#8230;.like college football, cricket is a tough game</div>
<div> </div>
<div>5 &#8211;  show the<strong> types of balls</strong> used &#8211; explain that at a &#8221;just for fun&#8221; level we play with a &#8220;soft&#8221; ball &amp; no equipment is required and even first-timers &amp; novices can play. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>EXPLAINING CRICKET:</div>
<div> </div>
<div>In explaining anything you should not start with the most complicated part &#8211; yet cricketers begin by explaining LBW, &amp; other more complicated parts of the game&#8217;s rules &#8211; its simple, cricket is a bat &amp; ball game, where 1 team tries to score more runs than the other !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>When explaining say: <strong>Cricket has 3 formats</strong>, the differences being the length of the game. DON&#8217;T explain lesser stuff like colored vs white clothing unless asked.</div>
<div>                1. <strong>The format of American College Cricket is the shortest form</strong> : about 3 hours, roughly the length of a football,baseball game or basketball game.</div>
<div>                 2 the other 2 formats last longer, 1 day and 5 half-days espectively (sort of like golf) </div>
<div> </div>
<div>OUTS &#8211; say there are <strong>2 main ways to get out</strong> - (1) bowled  (2) caught</div>
<div>                the others can be learned later    </div>
<div> </p>
<div>Cricket is the Original American game, and American College Cricket&#8217;s Mission is to bring it back and raise its profile. Accordingly we have gotten mainstream American media to do stories on cricket. There is a lot more work to be done.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Here are a few tips for when you are being interviewed by TV Asia, your College or other media:</div>
<div> </div>
<div><strong>1. DON&#8217;T say</strong> : T20 or 20/20&#8230;&#8230;.its cricket !&#8230;.(the format happens to be 20 overs, &#8220;a shortened format played over 3 hours&#8221;, I like to say).</div>
<div>Unless you are speaking at an Optamology or Optometrist Conference don&#8217;t say &#8220; T20 or 20/20 ! We are marketing CRICKET. American College Cricket promotes cricket, NOT T20 or Twenty20 !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>2.<strong> DON&#8217;T say</strong> : it&#8217;s a<strong> &#8221;gentleman&#8217;s game</strong>&#8221; - would you want to watch or play a &#8220;gentle man&#8217;s game&#8221; ?</div>
<div> </div>
<div>3.<strong> DON&#8217;T say : it&#8217;s British</strong> or a foreign game - Cricket was played by George Washington &amp; John Adams (the first 2 US Presidents), &amp; was the main American &amp; Canadian sport until the 1880s. ( Baseball was started in England too but nobody says its British)</div>
<div> </div>
<div>4. Highlight the fact that we catch the very HARD ball with our bare hands, and the daring of fielders ! Highlight fast bowlers charging up - &amp; the reasons we wear helmets &amp; other protective gear !  We must highlight the thrilling, exciting aspects of the game !</div>
<div>   Highligh the great saves &amp; catches of our fielders !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>5. <strong>Speak as a representative of your school &amp; American College Cricket</strong> - don&#8217;t allow anyone to make you feel like a &#8220;foreigner&#8221;. In Track &amp; Field &amp; other sports, &#8220;foreign&#8221; athletes represent US Colleges all the time.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>6. <strong>DON&#8217;T say</strong> &#8220;ACC&#8221;&#8230;noone knows what that is&#8230;&#8230;.ALWAYS say &#8220;American College Cricket&#8221;&#8230;&#8230;the name says it all&#8230;its College, its Cricket and its American !<a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/IowaClubFest.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-10171" title="IowaClubFest" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/IowaClubFest-300x300.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="300" /></a></div>
<div> </div>
<div>7. talk about your college rivalries &#8211; for example Auburn &amp; UF now have a strong rivalry going in cricket. USC &amp; UCLA, USC &amp; Thunderbird. </div>
</div>
<div> </div>
<div>8. The FIRST college sports teams in America were cricket teams.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Remember : there are over 100,000 students, classified as International students from India in American universities PLUS students from a &#8220;cricket background&#8221; who are American, &amp; American permanent residents,</div>
<div>PLUS International students from other cricket-playing countries like Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka,Nepal, England, Bangladesh, England, Australia, New Zealand in the USA &amp; Canada &#8211; lots of reasons for college cricket to be HUGE &#8211; but its up to us, it won&#8217;t happen by osmosis ! </div>
<div><a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/ACC_POSTER_OHIO.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-10172" title="ACC_POSTER_OHIO" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/ACC_POSTER_OHIO-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" /></a></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">by Lloyd Jodah</span></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Sunday was the Finals of the EACA League Power40 competition in Queens NY -  Atlantis Cricket Club vs Everest/ACS Cricket Club, and fans were in attendance,including Banks Beer.</span></div>
<div> </div>
<div>
<div>Two principals of EACA, Krish Prasad and John Aaron are on the Advisory Board of American College Cricket, and Rudy Persaud, President of the EACA (Eastern American Cricket Association) is a strong supporter of us. Hugh Pitter of Gateway Oval where we televise the North East Championship from, was also present.</div>
</div>
<div> </div>
<div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Captaining Everest/ACS was York College all rounder Karan Ganesh, who seems to score runs every time I see him bat. Ganesh was a key factor in York College winning the Chanderpaul Trophy at the 2012 American College Cricket National Championship, and is one of the top <a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Karan.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-10120" title="Karan" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Karan-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a>all rounder batsmen in the USA.</span></div>
<div> </div>
<div>Captaining John Aaron&#8217;s Atlantis Cricket Club was 19 year old Prashant Nair (CCNY) who played in last year&#8217;s American College Cricket North East Championship, and represented USA in the ICC Under 19 World Cup Qualifiers in Ireland.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Over the past 2 summers I&#8217;ve had the pleasure of watching Atlantis, managed by Lester Hooper, in action on an occasional Sunday as I&#8217;ve chatted with John. I even joined them for some Wedding food when their wicketkeeper Ryan Sookdeo got married !  </div>
<div>Everest/ACS won the toss and batted first. Nicholas Standford took 2 early wickets to make it 29 for 2 before Greg Sewdial (Hofstra U) 91, and Balwant 34 put on 99 runs.Sewdial&#8217;s 91 came off 68 balls and included 15 fours &amp; 1 six.                                                                                                 <em>Photo: Karan Ganesh (York College)</em></div>
<div> </div>
<div><a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Pitter.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-10121" title="Pitter" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Pitter-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a>Karan Ganesh then treated the bowlers imperiously,dispatching the balls expeditiously like some kind of ninja batsman. Ganesh&#8217;s 88 came off 55 balls, with 7 fours &amp; 6 sixes !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Amsterdam took 5 wickets for 58, but really the Atlantis bowling was not effective beyond Standford&#8217;s early wickets.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Set 282 and a scoring rate of 7.05 to win, Atlantis&#8217;s batting line up was strong, including Nicholas Standford and Kaveshwar Bridgepaul. Bridgepaul had wrecked havoc in the PSAL high school league &amp; the NYPD United Cricket league, and had made a come back from a stabbing he suffered when he was surprised and mugged by a gang.      </div>
<div> <em>Photo: Gateway Oval&#8217;s Hugh Pitter</em></div>
<div>Blades 23, Amsterdam 14,Standford 33 and Bridgepaul 12, all looked threatening briefly,before losing their wickets. <a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/LLZinul.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-10123" title="LLZinul" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/LLZinul-300x232.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="232" /></a></div>
<div>With Atlantis sinking, recently married Sukdeo might not have been so eager to go home, so he stuck around and smashed 22 with a 4 &amp; 2 sixes.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>All four Everest/ACS bowlers bowled well with S Amin taking 2 for 49, T Walke 2 for 40 whilst former USA Captain Zamin Amin took 4 for 20 and Man of the Match Karan Ganesh took 2 for 17 as Atlantis went under for 128. So Everest/ACS once again emerged Champions of the EACA League in the 40 over competition !</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The day was memorable for me too, as I met Zinul Mohammed, a man who played cricket with my father and uncles in the 1960s for Gandhi Youth Organisation, and on Jan 25 1970, Zinul flew on the same plane,and landed at JFK Airport with my Uncle Moses, the first Jodah to immigrate to the USA !                                                                                    <em>Photo: Zinul &amp; Lloyd</em></div>
<div> </div>
<div>Of course I had known that the first apartment my Uncle Moses stayed at in NYC, was owned by Krish Prasad !</div>
<div><a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/GYO.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-10130" title="GYO" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/GYO.jpg" alt="" width="604" height="408" /></a></div>

<p>Trinson Carmichael got his 2nd NYPD United title and the Ray Kelly Trophy, when his Dragons won vs Lycans at Gateway Oval last Tuesday. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly presented the Dragons with the Trophy at the end of the 5th season of the NYPD United youth league. </p>
<p>Then on Saturday Sept 1st the NYPD Officers team took on the Toronto Police Dept and won. PBA head Pat Lynch was on hand to greet the Canadian police officers. American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah, who was one of the people instrumental in the start of the NYPD team, attended the opening ceremony, and said, </p>
<p>&#8220;Having a NYPD Cricket team is tremendous for the game, and is part of institutionizing the game in American society, as we are doing with American College Cricket nationally, and the high school &amp; NYPD United league in NYC. I&#8217;d like to see the NYPD, Fire Dept and US Military all have cricket teams.&#8221; </p>

<p> but TV Asia &amp; American College Cricket is changing that. For the 2nd year TV Asia heavily promoted American College Cricket on their float in the 33rd Annual India Day Parade Sunday, as Madison Ave NYC rocked to the sounds of Indian music !</p>
</div>
<div>Chief Guest of the India Day Parade this year was legendary Indian bowler Anil Kumble, and American College Cricket players were ecstatic to meet the Indian cricket great, on the Espn float promoting the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Thousands lined Madison Ave, NYC to watch Anil Kumble and Parade Grand Marshall Saif Ali Khan, son of the late Nawab of Pataudi who captained India in the 1960&#8242;s.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah met Kumble and rode on both the Espn &amp; TV Asia float with some American College Cricket players. LIU-Brooklyn Club President Sandeep Devarshetty and some American College Cricketers rode with their idol Kumble and the ICC T20 World Cup Trophy - certainly one of the highlights of their lives.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Reading the &#8220;American College Cricket&#8221; written on the shirt Kumble asked the students about it, and was happily surprised to find out that cricket was being played in American &amp; Canadian Universities. The students then donned Espn shirts to ride with Kumble.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> The event celebrating India&#8217;s Independence was televised by TV Asia -the voice &amp; mirror of the South Asian Community in the USA.</div>

<p><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">On my walk <span style="font-size: x-small;">back to the apt</span> – a 5.6 Km trek – I walked right by Chris Rock, and we both said hello to each other, asked each other <span style="font-size: x-small;">how</span> we were doing, and continued on! HOW COOL IS THAT?! I love Chris Rock, he has such an awesome smile, and such a distinct voice. I wish I stopped and chatted with him, and perhaps got a photograph, but I get really weird with celebrities, and I don’t like to make a big deal of them. I was so excited about it !!!!! I still am !!!!!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-size: small;">Before I left NYC, I took a walk to South Street Seaport in Lower Manhattan. My favourite kiosk was this amazing jewellery stand that sells real flowers that have been coated in resin to preserve their beauty and life; the resin hardens them enough that you can throw them on the floor without them breaking. I wanted a pair of earrings <em>SO BAD</em>, but they cost $35-42, and at the moment I have to be frugal with my money. It was tempting though.</span></span></p>

<p><strong></strong>For one third of 2012, I have challenged myself to complete 4000 minutes of explosive plyometric exercises from the Nike Training Club app on my iPhone. And let me tell you, I am seeing results already! </p>
<div>
<div>
<div>My tummy is getting flatter and my legs are getting more defined (I don’t think they will ever become smaller, since I am genetically <del>cursed</del> blessed with thunderous thighs). And best part…not only am <em>I</em> seeing results, but my friend Preet (who has been kind enough to accompany me during this challenge) is also seeing positive results. Awesome right?! SEEING RESULTS IS THE BEST MOTIVATION! My favourite thing about plyometrics is that I never get bored!  </div>
<div> </div>
</div>
</div>
<div>Plyometrics are quick, powerful, and explosive movements which improve the  nervous system, build fast twitch muscle fibres, and increase power and reaction time. No wonder it is more commonly used amongst athletes eh?! These exercises will improve pretty much everything from agility, power, strength, and coordination. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Basically they are drills or exercises which first eccentrically stretch the muscle and then quickly concentrically contract that same muscle. Muscles have a sort of defence mechanism, called a stretch-reflex, where they will actually contract when they are being stretched. I am sure you have experienced this before… as soon as you have stretched too far, your muscle will automatically contract in order to protect itself from being injured.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>So, plyos play on this “stretch reflex.” Muscles will produce<em> stronger</em> concentric contractions, after it has been stretched!</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Bottom line plyos are specifically designed to make us more <strong>powerful</strong>; this is done by increasing the maximum speed and force of each muscle contraction. Not only are they making the neuromuscular system (the intricate system of electrical signals shooting towards muscles so that they can move) more efficient, but they are actually <em>increasing</em> flexibility and strengthening tendons and ligaments attached to bones and muscles.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>All this being said, because plyometrics are performed so rapidly and explosively, they can actually lead to injury. So please perform each exercise mindfully and WITH PROPER FORM !</div>
<p>If you are looking to improve your speed so you can stop the ball, or your vertical jump so that you can make those catches, then get yourself started with some PLYOMETRICS !  </p>
<div>Let me warn you though, plyometrics are not meant to be easy! There is a lot of jumping around, which means your heart rate is going to skyrocket. I don’t know about you, but I <strong>love</strong> when my heart rate is up; however, I have noticed many people find this to be uncomfortable and start slowing down as soon as their hearts start to pump faster. So, if you are weak at heart then either grow some kahoonas or continue living unfit, flabby, and unhealthy.<br />
CHALLENGE YOURSELF! Ain’t nothing going to happen if you do not push yourself  !</div>
<p>Okay, so I went to this incredible burger joint<span style="font-size: x-small;">, </span>and oh-my-gosh, I was reborn. I wish I could bring Papa here since he loves a burgers.</p>
<p>Okay, the main reason for my rebirth: OSTRICH MEAT! I had freaking OSTRICH meat for the first time. I was soooo excited about trying it that I was having dreams about it the night before.<a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Alyna5Ostrich.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-9835" title="Alyna5Ostrich" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Alyna5Ostrich-224x300.jpg" alt="" width="224" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>First off, all Bareburger’s ingredients are 100% organic,  their meats are all natural, free-range, and grass-fed, and all cheeses are also organic and all-natural.They have an awesome list of exotic meats to choose from: lamb, wild boar, elk, bison, and ostrich; as well as, turkey, chicken, veggie, and portobello mushroom patties. </p>
<p>You have bread options as well: brioche bun, multigrain roll, wheat flour wrap, gluten-free tapioca rice bun, and lettuceleaves. And then to further make your mouth water, you can choose an assortment of toppings like bass avocado, onion rings, fried onions, apple smoked onions, cucumber mint yogurt, blackened maple bacon, canadian bacon, chipotle mayo, swiss, sharp cheddar, tomatillo sauce, pesto mayo, and the list goes on and on……….</p>
<p>Check out the <a href="http://www.bareburger.com/wp-content/themes/_base_/docs/bareburger-menu.pdf" target="_blank">menu</a> – <em>for real</em>…if you don’t live in NYC you will <em>want to</em> fly here <em>JUST</em> for this freaking burger. </p>
<p>I didn’t end up getting a bun with minecious, , instead I got a huge, delihearty salad, with the ostrich patty on top.</p>
<p><strong>Fun Fact: </strong></p>
<p><strong>Ostrich meat is one of the leanest red meats out there; it is low in cholesterol, and high in protein. When compared to chicken, in a 100 gram serving, Ostrich meat has roughly 9% less cholesterol, close to 50 calories less than <span style="font-size: x-small;">chicken</span>, and 7% more protein!!! <em>AND</em> it tastes darn good!! Kind of like beef, but not as beefy (haha if that makes any sense).</strong> <a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Seaport.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-9836" title="Seaport" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Seaport-300x223.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="223" /></a></p>
<p> The Brooklyn Bridge from the South Street Seaport.</p>
<p><span style="font-family: WingDings;"> </span></p>

<div>July 7th: I am heading back home to Vancouver tonight; I am super excited to get back home to my family, friends, and my home, but I am going to miss my cousins so much.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>I mean, Amaani and I have been sharing a bed for the past 2 months; I wake up to her and fall asleep to her, and now the only way I can hang out with her is either over Skype or the phone. It really is sad. And I can’t believe that 2 months have flown by so freaking fast.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> I still remember my first day in the city – May 7 – the day I went for a long run through the city, and grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s. That was a darn good day! It is so crisp in my mind still. I even remember thinking that I would think back on that very day at the very end of my trip. Ha!</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The weekend before the 4th of July we took a bus  to a small town in UPstate NY. Every year Amaani’s friend, Odetta, and Odetta’s family invite a whole bunch of their friends and family up to their getaway house to celebrate Odetta’s birthday. <a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Aly4Crabs.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-9737" title="Aly4Crabs" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Aly4Crabs-300x223.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="223" /></a></div>
<div> </div>
<div>They call this annual event Crabfest because they get a whole TON of crabs to eat for dinner, and make a bunch of delicious crab dishes for themselves and their guests. It was one of the best camping-esque trips I have ever been on.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Odetta and her family are all super talented musicians, and a lot (or almost all from what it seemed) of their friends are super talented musicians too.So the entire trip everyone was jamming out with drums, guitars, flutes, accordions, and all sorts of other instruments.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>We played volleyball, softball, swam in the river, MADE SUSHI FOR THE FIRST TIME, ate copious amounts of delicious food, drank spiked fresh fruit smoothies, laughed, drum circled, danced under the moonlight, roasted marshmallows around the fire, made s’mores, and sang. I was so relaxed and peaceful all weekend long.<a href="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Aly4Fire.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-9738" title="Aly4Fire" src="http://americancollegecricket.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Aly4Fire-300x223.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="223" /></a></div>
<div> </div>
<div>In fact, I was so inspired by the improv jam sessions amongst all the musicians that <em>I have decided to learn to play the guitar. </em>My brother and dad both play the guitar, and have a couple of guitars kicking around at home, so what better instrument to learn than the one I have been exposed to the most ?!</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Hey, &amp; Jimi Hendrix&#8217;s father was from Vancouver, my hometown- Jimi was born in nearby Seattle, &amp; spent sometime in Vancouver ! </div>
<div> </div>
<div>When I came back to NYC, I did a Leg work :</div>
