Long Island City High School leads all schools in the NYC Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) Cricket, being undefeated with 9 wins.

FDR High School has 8 wins, 0 losses and John Adams High 7 wins with no losses.

Last year LIC made it to the Finals where they lost in a nail-biting finish to Brooklyn’s FDR High School led by star 2011 MVP Jazeb Tariq.

Lehman High almost spoiled LIC’s undefeated streak in a nail-biting finish at the picturesque Baisley Park South after Lehman restricted LIC to 105 total runs, but then failed to seize the opportunity for the “big” win.

Martin Van Buren, with top batsman Amarnauth Persaud, has won 7 games, but lost 2.

Runs feast continues during week six as Lehman High’s Saiful Hasan scored his first century (112) of the season against Bronx Science HS, while Martin Van Buren’s Tajinder Singh slamed his first unbeaten century (108*) against Newcomers Hgh School, whilst his teammate Amarnauth Persaud scored 69.

Syed Islam fell five runs (95) short of his first century and lead wicket taker, Taher Miah of Clinton HS thumped William Bryant HS by 9 wickets at Kissena Park on Saturday, May 12th.

Hat-trick: Dhanraj Hansraj (3 wickets, 3 runs allowed) – Richmond Hill HS

Five wicket haul:

Keifer Phill (5 wickets) – HS of Construction

Naquarn Charlemagne (5 wickets, 23 runs allowed) – Prospects Heights

“We went up in the plane on two days, and I spent a total of 1600 seconds in zero-gravity. It was the next best thing to actually being in space. Wearing the NASA uniform was really cool , like wearing the Auburn Cricket uniform !”

When asked what he thought would be the efffect of Zero Gravity on a cricket bowler, Naveen laughed and said, “The ball would never hit the ground, it would be kind of like a Shoiab Akhtar beamer lol !”

What about a batsman hitting a six ? “That would never come down, it would be like an Afridi or Chris Gayle 6 !”

Naveenan Thiagajaran, Captain of the Auburn University Cricket Club, and a 2011 American College Cricket Player of the Year was chosen for the flight together with Sushil Bhavnani, Auburn faculty member and Auburn undergrad Travis Wheeler.

John Bowne’s Mohammed Sadat slammed a ton (119*) against High School of Construction, while Taher Miah took seven wickets against Bronx HS of Science. Miah edged out Lincoln’s Bilal Khan by one wicket to become the leading wicket taker (17) thus far.

Van Buren’s Amarnauth Persaud continued to have the season of his life after missing out on his third century (90*), and also scoring 56*. Persaud leads all players in total runs scored and is sitting comfortable on the highest batting average (149) thus far.

Amarnauth’s numbers remind one of his hero, fellow left hander Shiv Chanderpaul who is also difficult to get out !

The Indiana University Cricket Club recently visited Yuvraj Singh, as he receives treatment for cancer in the US.

Yuvraj’s health first deteriorated during the World Cup in 2011, but he persevered and was declared Man of the Tournament (MVP), helping India win the one day World Cup for the first time since 1983. He scored 352 runs and took 15 wickets.

At the 2007 World Twenty20 he hit 6 sixes in an over against England’s Stuart Broad, including one for 390 feet.

He has a rare, but curable form of cancer called seminoma. The 30 year old 6′ 2′ Yuvraj said he’s inspired by Lance Armstrong, and has received a message of support from Armstrong.

Touched by their gesture, Yuvraj, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy in US, wrote on Twitter, “Local students and fans came to wish me just outside my app! Felt like I was in india ! Sweet of them…………Some came with flowers some came with cards some with home made food ! Touched!!”

The Indiana University Cricket Club’s first hardball team was motivated by Aoun Jafarey and American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah in August 2010 for the American College Cricket Midwest Championship. Now led by Joseph Ipe, it had a strong performance in 2011.

All of American College Cricket wish Yuvraj Singh the best, and is looking forward to seeing him on the field soon….”Yuvistrong !”

He was making last minute preparations for…..well he should have been making last minute preparations for Christmas, checking his list, and checking it twice ! But Santa was actually sending a Facebook Friend Request to Lloyd Jodah, President of American College Cricket and writting an email.

Mrs Claus was getting on Santa’s case, “All month, on & on about what’s his name and his 100 centuries,- its Christmas why are you still busy with cricket ? You have to begin delivering Gifts now – the Sleigh is loaded and ready. Lots of kids are waiting for their Christmas Gifts!”

Santa was under pressure, but he kept his cool, “I know, I know….but this is really important….I got all these requests from guys in Universities all over the USA & Canada who want to play in the 2012 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship – I have to see what I can do to get them what they want. ”

“Well hurry up” Mrs Claus urged, ”Oh and whilst you’re doing that see if you can get Rudolph in too, he was telling me something about Spring Break, chicks and cricket”.

“Rudolph ?” Santa seemed surprised.

“Yes, Rudolph, ” Mrs Claus confirmed, “The other Reindeer won’t let him play in any Bowl Games, so he wants to go to the American College Cricket Championship.”

“I’ll see what I can do my Dear, ” Santa said as he continued clicking away on his computer, taking a sip on his Starbucks Egg Nog.

Suddenly there was a loud “Yesss!!!” as Santa Claus jumped out of his seat, accidentally knocking over his Egg Nog……Mrs Claus came running into the room to see what the commotion was about ! “What happened ?! “ she asked.

Santa answered excitedly, “Yes !!! Apparently Lloyd spends a lot of time on Facebook, he responded quickly ! He said he will allow the late Colleges in ! and even better….he will let Rudolph and the Reindeer play too….Rudolph will lead the North Pole University Cricket team ! ”

Mrs Claus rushed over and hugged Santa, ”OOoooooohhhhhh..what a Merry Christmas, I loove yooouuu my Jelly Belly,my Chubby Hubby,my Rolly Poly, my Michelin Man,….I would hug you tighter if I could get my arms around you !”

“Thank you dear” Santa said, “I’m happy just being with you here…..but it’ll be great for Rudolph & the Reindeer to go play cricket at Spring Break with their college peers. Plus they’ll enjoy the Ft Lauderdale Beaches, Miami, South Beach and the women down there”.

“You are such a thoughtful man, Santa, and so self less ” Mrs Claus gushed, “By the way, I’ve been meaning to ask you, what’s all this mail we’ve been getting from American and Canadian Universities ? ”

“Oh that? ” Santa responded off handedly, “I’ve just been thinking of going back to college for a Master’s .”

“Going back to College ?! ” Mrs Claus let Santa go quicker than a hot plate, “Are you planning on going back to College so you can play in the American College Cricket Spring Break Championship ? ! ”

Basil D’Oliveira died Saturday aged 80 or 83 . D’Oliveira became the catalyst for the eventual end of Apartheid in South Africa, though he just wanted to play cricket.

When South Africa refused to accept D’Oliveira (of Indian & Portuguese descent) as part of the English Cricket touring team to South Africa in 1968, the resultant cricket boycott mushroomed into a worldwide sports boycott.

So whilst the world continued to do business with Apartheid South Africa (an economic boycott didn’t happen until the 1980′s), cricket set in motion a sports boycott that isolated, and eventually destroyed the heinous system of apartheid – with enormous effects on racism all over the world as well.

D”Oliveira’s own dignified character and cricket skills also galvanized the Britsh people in his support. Even as the British and other “Western govts” refused to take a stand against apartheid.

India spoke out against apartheid at the UN in 1948 but Wikipedia says even in 1973 “a number of nations have neither signed nor ratified the UN’s ICSPCA, including Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.“ The ICSPCA declared apartheid to be a “crime against humanity.”

In 1990 Nelson Mandela was released from prison and Apartheid finally fell in 1994. Jacques Kallis’ and Hashim Amla’s accomplishments are a direct result of the free South Africa Basil D’Oliveira helped bring about.

As a cricketer D’Oliveira was good enough to possibly be one of the world’s greatest all rounders ever, but because of apartheid he made his Test debut aged 34 or 38 ( he altered his date of birth to avoid being pinned as “too old”.) -for England instead of South Africa.

Cricket South Africa chief executive Gerald Majola said,

”The circumstances surrounding him being prevented from touring the country of his birth with England in 1968 led directly to the intensification of opposition to apartheid around the world and contributed materially to the sports boycott that turned out to be an Achilles’ heel of the apartheid government,”

RUTGERS, TATA INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCE LAUNCH

INDIA CENTER FOR SUSTAINABLE GROWTH AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT

Rutgers University Press Release

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – If strength truly lies in numbers, then India, with a population that includes more than 550 million citizens under 25, has the potential to develop one of the world’s great workforces.

At present, however, only a small percentage of those young people are gaining access to higher-level skills. A new joint initiative of Rutgers and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai, the India Center for Sustainable Growth and Talent, will seek to correct that shortcoming.

“Talent has been the key to India’s emergence as a rapidly developing economic power since it liberalized its economy in 1991,” said David Finegold, Rutgers’ senior vice president for Lifelong Learning and Strategic Growth. “The country’s large supply of well-educated, English-speaking graduates has helped attract investment from corporations around the world in its IT and business services.

“But for India is to capture the benefits of its ‘demographic dividend,’ the largest single workforce for the global economy of the 21st century, India must urgently reform all stages of its education and training system.”

The new joint center will provide expert support for India’s National Skill Development Strategy and the cooperative 21st Century Knowledge Initiative launched earlier this year by President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Its three core parts are:

Applied research through the India Talent Observatory, including the influential annual survey of Indian graduates studying abroad that was jointly developed by Finegold (then dean of Rutgers’ School of Management and Labor Relations) and Professor B. Venkatesh Kumar of TISS in Mumbai.

Cooperative education and training programs, including student exchange, development of dual-degree programs and short courses for continuing and executive education

Capacity building to enhance the governance and capabilities of India’s education and training institutions through research fellowships for new and prospective Indian faculty, administrators and higher education policymakers.

The annual survey of Indian graduate students studying abroad was the institutions’ first joint project. The research covered nearly 1,000 Indians who are either pursuing or have completed graduate study in the United States and found that only 8 percent strongly prefer to remain in this country.

At the time, Finegold called the findings “surprising and encouraging” for Indian universities. “We expected that more students would lean heavily toward remaining in the U.S., but our results suggest many young academics would be interested in pursuing a faculty career in India if policymakers can address some of the key issues facing the Indian higher education system.”

Finegold added that India needs to recruit at least 1 million new faculty members for its colleges and universities if it is to meet the government’s goal of making higher education available to 20 percent of young people by 2020. The partners’ second version of the survey – to study Indians being educated in the United Kingdom and Australia and to also compare them with Chinese who have come to study in the U.S. – will be carried out in November.

Both Rutgers and the Tata Institute have contributed funding toward the initiative and will seek additional monies through the Obama-Singh Knowledge Initiative. Private sources of funding also are being sought, Finegold said.

In another momentous event, Rutgers University plays vs NYU-Polytechnic in the first ever televised American College Cricket match this Saturday at 7 pm on TV Asia -available on major cable systems in the USA & Canada & Dish Network.
