Sarwan Trophy for Canadian Universities Championship !

International cricket superstar Ramnaresh “Ronnie” Sarwan has announced his endorsement of  the Canadian Inter -University-College Championship set to take place September 13-17, 2010 at King City,Ontario. The winning University/College will take home the “Sarwan Trophy “. 

Sarwan is the youngest West Indies batsman to reach 5,000 runs in Tests, with his highest Test score  being 291.He is currently in South Africa, as Captain of the Guyana team competing in the Champions League Twenty20 2010.

York University, Champions of the 2010 American College Cricket Championship, will join Waterloo, two teams from the University of Toronto (Scarborough and St. George campuses), Ryerson, University of the Ontario Institute of Technology,Queen’s University, Sheridan College, University of Manitoba and McGill University.to compete for the Sarwan Trophy

Cricket Canada’s First Vice President Ravin Moorthy said “This is a momentous step for our sport in Canada. Universities have a burgeoning number of elite players and this is a way to get an education and play cricket. 

We have seen major Universities provide recognition for cricket and this augurs well for the development of the game.winning the Chanderpaul Trophy (at the American College Cricket Championship) brought mainstream media attention such as the Globe and Mail to the York University cricket club. Mahjuj Sourav,the tournament organizer has been instrumental in getting this project off the ground and we are pleased to support in any way we can to make this event an annual success.” 

 American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah said, 

Nino DiLoreto and I wish all the best to the Caandian Inter-University Championship. We saw a lot of talent on the York university team when they came to Florida, and we are happy to see their participation in the American College Cricket Championship bear fruit, in the form of a Canadian collegiate championship. We are happy to assist in team development recently at McGill and Queen’s Universities. 

We are ecstatic at securing Ronnie Sarwan’s endorsement. As two current superstars Shiv Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan will forever be appreciated for tangibly supporting the development of cricket in the USA and Canada.”  

We designed, with Cricketzone’s Ravi, special Tophies for the Canadian tournament and the American College Cricket Regionals.”  

American College Cricket VP Nino DiLoreto said.

“Our strategic partners BIG League USA are already benefiting from their relationship with us, as our intiatives grow cricket’s visibility exponentially in North America.”

Mohammed Shaikh of the Toronto and District Cricket Association (TDCA), who was instrumental in getting the tournament through its final hurdles, said, ” We were pleased to help the organizers get a tournament with such potential off the ground. We are hoping this will be successful in years to come and continue to assist in the development of cricketers in the greater Toronto area and around the country.” 

A Combined Universities team will also play a friendly game against a Canada “A” team. All matches will be played at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club, King City,Ontario.
