4th of July Win for USA ! President celebrates !

Ian Carlin (Wooster) was there with Darwin Banks & 2 lovely ladies.
It’s the 4th of JULY 2012, Yankee Stadium, NY is packed with 70,000 cricket fans here to see the T20 World Cup Finals pitting the USA against defending Champions England. In May 2010 a huge dust cloud was caused when the English opened their Trophy cabinet for the first time in decades – this had grounded flights all over the Northern Hemisphere, but the English felt vindicated when they won the 2010 T20 World Cup.

Since gaining Independence in 1776 the child, USA had remained close to the parent England, except for the War of 1812, but now it was like the Revolutionary Wars all over again. England’s Kevin Pietersen had criticised the USA Team as “foreign-born” and “expats”.There were Tea Parties in Boston and sports pages screamed “The Britsh are coming…..to lose”.

Beyonce sang the US National Anthem, and being Beyonce, also sang “God save the Queen”. Lady Gaga threw a tantrum and put on her clothes. To start the game Sir Lloyd Jodah, knighted for leading the successful campaign to get cricket in the 2012 Olympics, batted the first ball from President Obama .Stars and Stripes and Union Jacks waved by the thousands.

The USA’s opening bowlers Adrian Gordon (NYU) and Yasneen Khan (YC) generated speeds over 90 mph. But the English batsmen Bopara and Eion Morgan took advantage of the fast outfield and stroked the ball to all parts of the field. Morgan reached his 50 with a hook for 6 off Saisritaram Ramesh (USF), then Bopara cover drove Tarun Sandhu (USC) for 4 to bring up his 50.

The 100 for England had come in 10.2 overs, when Kanye West walked onto the field and interrupted the game. The Police Canine Unit came on to get West off the field, which made Michael Vick very excited, he jumped up yelling “Now I’ve got a dog in the fight !”

The thousands of English fans were roaring and singing “We are sailing” when spinner Ryan Corns struck for the Americans, by getting Bopara stumped by wicketkeeper Akeem Dodson. Pietersen was out to a really fast delivery from Gordon. Owais Shah and Morgan continued the onslaught before Morgan was caught for 68 by Hashim Khan (GMU). Craig Kiewetter (14) and Collingwood( 13 ) helped Shah ( 40 * ) take England to the formidable total of 203 off 20 overs.

The crowd was celebrity-packed.
P Diddy wore All-White but was surprised the Cricketers wore colored clothing.
Brad Pitt and Angelie Jolie came with the Cricket Team they had adopted.
T.I was telling eveyone he was now into computers and wanted to be known as I.T.
Russell Crowe showed he had a good arm by throwing a cellphone from the boundary to the wicketkeeper’s head.
Tiger Woods couldn’t afford a ticket to the game but his ex-wife was there with 10 bodyguards.

Ashwarya Rai, Shilpa Shetty, Kaitrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra (with Sadiq Naseer (MC) and Ciara dazzled in the VIP boxes where Bill Clinton, Michael Jordan,Tom Brady, Kobe Bryant, Howard Stern and Hrithik Roshan could also be found. Louisiana Gov Bobby Jindall, running for President, said he was “building an innings”,and “wouldn’t be stumped ” by the Media.

Larry Fitzgerald was having a good time as a ball boy jumping to catch the sixes, but Plaxico Burress couldn’t get through the Metal Detectors. Even Al Sharpton was happy, he was pleased the cricketers were wearing colored, not white clothing.

A.R Rahman and the Pussycat Dolls were joined by Jay Z, Akon and Drake to start the Halftime Show then Rock Superstar Rod Stewart rocked the Stadium and had the fans in a raucous singalong of a few of his countless hits, including “Sailing” which had been adopted by the British Royal Navy as their Anthem.

A major sponsor BP, now known as “WP” (for Who? Petroleum ) was now making cricket fields all over the USA to demonstrate its concern for the environment.

The game was being carried live on TV worldwide but the ball by ball commentary had been outsourced, to India so Sunil Gavaskar & Kapil Dev were in Mumbai describing the event.

Then it was USA’s turn to bat.The USA Team composition had drastically changed after the Team Selectors were enrolled in a University Course titled “The peak years of male athletes are usually between 20 and 25 ,not 15 or 42″.”

The USA Captain Steve Massiah, like George Washington crossing the Delaware, decided to lead from the front and opened the batting with Ankit Sehgal (MC). but Anderson struck when Sehgal was on 22 (3 fours) and the USA was 36 for 1 in 5 overs.

The left-handed Andy Mohammed (TCI) strolled to the wicket and hooked the first delivery he faced for 6. Andy Mohammed (23) brought the scoring rate up before he too went caught and bowled off a ferocius drive to Broad. Shiva Vashishat (UC),Aditya Thyagarajan & Henry Wardley (McGill) quickly went and the English bowlers were torching the US at 78 for 5 in 10 overs, Massiah holding steady at 25*. All rounder Adil Bhatti (MC) who had led Montgomerry College to the first American College Cricket Championship, joined Massiah, but the runrate needed now was over 12 runs an over.

F 15’s roared overhead as the 2 American batsmen applied themselves to the task of freeing their Team from the tyranny of the English bowlers. Massiah pulled for 6, cut for 4, coverdrove overhead for 4 whilst Bhatti played the role of John Adams. Then Bhatti got into the act, no doubt inspired by the presence of his girlfiend Megan Fox in the crowd (she thought he looked like a Transformer in his protective gear).

Yes, cricketers were now hot, Kim Kardashian had left Reggie Bush for Andre Kirton (BMCC) then Rahul Potghan (Auburn) whilst Jessica Simpson was rumored to be dating Steve Massiah, though she doesn’t understand why cricket players need a cup, when she sees them drink water directly from the bottle.

The Fireworks along the East River was soon to start but the Fireworks in the Stadium were going full blast. Going into the last over the USA needed 17 to win, Bhatti (70 *) flicked over midwicket for 6, and drove through covers for 4, a single gave Captain Steve “Washington” Massiah the strike with 2 balls and 6 runs needed. Anderson beat the bat with one that swung away, leaving 1 delivery and 6 runs. It was pitched on the middle stump, Massiah went forward and picked it off on the full, over midwicket for 6 runs just as Chanderpaul had done against Sri Lanka – the crowd erupted at the same moment the Macy’s Fireworks began !!

The stumps were swept up by the winning Americans as Captain Massiah (70 *) spoke to the TV camers, and said goodbye to his troops, saying ” Now that we’ve won , I’m retiring to Virginia….”

Brett Favre, in the crowd, declared his 5th Comeback, this time to play cricket.
Mayor Bloomberg gushed that he was going to make a cricket pitch in Times Square.
Lebron James decided he was staying in Cleveland so he could play cricket for Cleveland State University.

Bill Belicheck had videotaped the whole game.

The USA had beaten England –more than World Champions, the USA had now declared to England and the Cricket World that it could stand as a Sovereign Cricketing Country ! George Washington would be proud !
